Chapter 38
"Taking a week off?" Leopold raised an eyebrow. "Why didn't anyone tell me?"
He pulled out his phone. "From now on, I want updates on her every move."
"Yes, Mr. Neville," Robert replied.
Leopold continued, "Where's she going and what's she up to?"
Robert hesitated before answering, "Mrs. Neville didn't say."
Didn't say? She must be trying to dodge him. He called Dennis and calmly instructed, "Notify the airport immediately..."
Less than an hour later, Agnes stormed into the president's office at ZL Group, dragging her suitcase behind her.
She tossed her suitcase aside, glaring at Leopold. "Mr. Neville, what's the meaning of this? Are you really restricting my freedom?"
Leopold didn't respond right away. He finished signing a document before looking up. "You're coming to class with me this afternoon," he said.
"I'm not going!" she shot back.
Leopold stood up, his tone unyielding. "You have to."
Agnes plopped down on his sofa, her voice icy. "Since you have time now, let's clear the air. I've signed the divorce papers. Please, Mr. Neville, sign them too so we can go our separate ways." She had been thinking about divorce for a long time.
Ever since Leopold found out she was his wife, he had been meddling in her life. Was she married to a husband or a warden?
She had never tried to please anyone before, and now she had to cater to Leopold in every way! The worst part was, he didn't even appreciate it!
She couldn't take this life anymore! It was time to lay it all out!
Leopold sat down on the sofa across from her and stated firmly, "Divorce is not an option."
"Why not? I don't want any of your money or property. What more do you want?" Agnes was fuming.
Before he could respond, she added, "I'll pay back the money I used over the past three years once I get a job!"
Leopold glanced at the already agitated Agnes. "I am sorry for the past three years. It won't happen again, I swear."
Agnes was taken aback. Was he apologizing?
"You don't need to apologize. You don't love me, and I don't love you. This marriage is pointless. And don't forget, if we live apart for two years, it counts as an automatic divorce. If you still refuse, I'll sue you!" Agnes declared.
Her last words made Leopold chuckle softly. She really didn't know how the world worked. 'Sue me? Should I hire the best lawyer for her?'
Leopold explained calmly, "First, the separation must last for two years. Three months after our marriage, we had dinner together. One year, nine months, and ten days ago, we shared the same bed. You didn't know because you were in a deep sleep."
When he slipped into her room, he didn't bother turning on the light. In the dark, he wasn't interested in having sex with her. He just rested for a couple of hours and then left.
Agnes's eyes widened in shock. She couldn't believe something like that had happened without her knowing!
Leopold pulled out a cigarette but didn't light it because she was there. "Secondly, separation must be due to an 'emotional breakdown,' not for other reasons. My long-term work assignments don't qualify. Also, both parties must agree to the divorce; there's no such thing as an automatic divorce."
Maybe she needed to check with a lawyer to see if he was bluffing.
"Third..." He suddenly stood up and walked towards her, leaning down with his arms on the sofa's armrests, trapping her. Agnes pressed herself tightly against the back of the sofa.
Why was he getting so close? Was he trying to seduce her?
With his sudden approach, the atmosphere in the office shifted, becoming more charged.
Seeing her tense up, Leopold's lips curled into a smirk. "Separation requires evidence. I can't provide that. Can you, honey?"
Why was he calling her "honey" all of a sudden? It made her head spin. She stammered, "I can."
"Where will you get it?" he asked.
Agnes tried to move back but realized she was out of space. "I can ask Eden and Robert to testify."
"Do you think Eden and Robert will listen to you or me?" he said.
Leopold's breath lightly brushed her face, making Agnes blush. Why was he so close? But she didn't have the guts to push him away.
"Let me tell you one last thing." As he finished speaking, he suddenly kissed her. Agnes's mind went blank.
Luckily, the kiss was brief. Leopold soon pulled away. "Lastly, separation means not fulfilling marital duties. If you want, honey, I can also exercise my husband's rights." He moved even closer, their faces almost touching.
Agnes quickly shook her head. "No need."
Leopold suddenly pulled her up to face him, wrapping his long arm around her. "So, honey, I think your best choice is to stay with me and stop having wild thoughts."
Agnes was completely mesmerized by his looks. Staring at Leopold's incredibly handsome face, she nodded dumbly.
His scent was comforting, giving her a sense of security, and his lips were so sexy.
Seeing her slightly infatuated gaze, Leopold smiled in satisfaction.
Wait! Agnes quickly shook her head, trying to clear Leopold's face from her mind. "Why aren't we getting a divorce? You don't love me, and I don't love you!" She was really puzzled and repeated her question.
Leopold's large hand fell on her long hair, stroking it. It felt nice. "First, you need money to study or achieve your dreams. Second, I need a wife to fend off those messy women outside. Third, when Grandpa asked me to marry you, he said we were a good match. He told me not to change such a suitable partner casually!"
She was left speechless. Leopold could say such things. Why didn't he switch careers to become a lawyer?
