Chapter 40

She and Justin were chatting just now. What happened?

Then she tried calling other friends. "What's up with these people? Why are all their phones off?" Agnes was about to lose it, but when she looked up, she saw rows of tombstones, and it freaked her out.

Meanwhile, all the friends Agnes had called were chilling at a restaurant. Some guys in black suits took their phones and locked them in a private room.

Luckily, the table was loaded with all kinds of delicious food. They had no clue about Agnes's situation and were just enjoying their meal.

After more than ten minutes in the cemetery without being able to get a ride, Agnes was on the verge of tears. She huddled under a tree root, trying to make calls, but the signal was so bad that none of them went through.

How did she end up marrying a weirdo like Leopold?

"Hey, heroes, no offense, but please don't scare me. Bella, Clara, Justin, Jeremy, just wait till I get back; I'm cutting ties with all of you! Leopold, you deserve to be single for 28 years. No, actually, 25 years." She had no choice but to call Leopold.

With the crappy signal, it took her over ten tries to get through. "Leopold, I know I messed up. Please come get me." The call dropped because of the bad signal.

Agnes was about to lose her mind!

She had never met anyone as heartless as Leopold. He wouldn't agree to a divorce, wouldn't let her skip classes, and in his eyes, everything she did was wrong! Why did he have to treat her like this?

Thinking about it, Agnes started to cry.

Her sobs were loud in the quiet night at national cemeter, and her mournful cries scared the caretaker away.

She didn't even notice when someone appeared in front of her.

When she wiped her tears and tried to stand up, she realized someone was standing there. Her scream echoed through the cemetery.

Leopold quickly caught the now limp Agnes and carried her in his arms.

Seeing who it was, Agnes cried even harder. "Let go of me! Weren't you going to leave me alone?" She had never met someone so detestable!

In fact, many women had cried in front of Leopold because he had ruthlessly rejected them.

But their tears only annoyed him, making him want to throw them far away! Unlike now, with Agnes sobbing in his arms, his heart felt uneasy.

Maybe it was because, despite everything, she had never cried in front of him before. Even when Leopold had her thrown into the vast, dark sea, she hadn't shed a tear and had only become more determined.

He wanted to comfort her but wasn't good at it. Awkwardly, he said, "If you stop crying, I'll take you away from here right now."

Agnes's crying stopped abruptly. She glared at him with red eyes and nose, but then remembered she needed his help and didn't dare to glare anymore. Her expression changed several times in a short span.

Leopold's eyes softened; he had never seen such a cute woman.

He composed himself and spoke again, his voice still cold, "Are you thinking about how to deal with me when we get back?"

How did he know? Agnes choked in surprise and quickly denied it, "I wasn't thinking that. Can we leave now?"

The place was so creepy she didn't dare look around.

He wasn't in a rush. "Are you going to class tomorrow?" He really didn't get why this place scared her so much.

"I'll go to class!" Of course, Agnes would; she didn't want to come back here ever again.

Tranquil Haven Estates.

When they got back to the villa, Agnes bolted to her room and headed straight to the bathroom for a shower.

She had broken out in a cold sweat at the cemetery.

Before bed, Agnes sent a message in their WhatsApp group, [I'm cutting ties with all of you!]

The others got their phones just now and saw Agnes's message as soon as they got their phones back. They were all confused and asked her what was wrong.

As Justin called Agnes, Clara noticed her latest Facebook post, [At this moment, the whole world has abandoned me!]

As soon as the call connected, Justin said, "Agnes, what's up? Tonight, a bunch of bodyguards invited us to dinner. The food was pretty good, but they took our phones. We just got them back. What happened to you?"

She realized everything. This was definitely Leopold's doing!

"I'm fine now. I'm getting ready to sleep. Are you all okay?" Agnes said.

"We're fine. We just don't know who treated us to a big meal. We wanted to call you, but our phones were taken!" Justin joked with her.

They wouldn't call Agnes in such a situation; who knew if those bodyguards were good or bad, after all.

But they were still puzzled about why they were treated to a meal and didn't allow them to leave!

Agnes wasn't in the mood to chat. She glanced out the window; it looked like it was going to storm. She got out of bed and closed the curtains. "You guys should head back soon; it's going to rain!"

"Alright, we'll talk tomorrow!" Justin said.

Around one in the morning, it started to pour outside, with thunder and lightning. A flash of lightning lit up the entire room, followed by a loud thunderclap.

Usually, Agnes wouldn't be afraid of such weather if she had the lights on, but tonight, she had just been scared at national cemetery.

She tossed and turned, unable to sleep, and took out her phone to browse Twitter. The rain intensified, and the thunder and lightning continued.

Coincidentally, she saw a novel recommendation on Twitter, accompanied by a horrific picture.

Suppressing a scream, she sat up in bed and looked around the large bedroom.

She took several deep breaths to calm her racing heart and suddenly remembered that Leopold was in the next room.

At this hour, he was asleep, right?

Why would he sleep comfortably while she was scared out of her wits? No way! That was not fair!

With that thought, she grabbed her pillow and climbed out of bed.

She quietly opened her bedroom door. The hallway was pitch dark, so she went back to get her phone and turned on the flashlight. She walked to Leopold's room and turned off the flashlight before reaching for the doorknob and quietly turning it.
