Chapter 49

Agnes gripped the hem of her dress, her mind spinning. Why on earth did Leopold show up out of the blue? How was she supposed to explain their relationship to everyone?

Leopold's eyes scanned the empty beer cans littering the floor. "Do you guys drink often?" he asked.

Everyone reacted differently; some nodded, some shook their heads.

Agnes shook her head firmly. No way was she admitting her drinking habits in front of Leopold.

"Dennis, go get ten cases of beer. No one leaves tonight until it's all gone!" Leopold's cold command felt like a death sentence. The room seemed to freeze, and their breath turned into visible clouds as fear gripped the five of them.

Agnes quickly did the math. With Leopold's taste, the beer would definitely be high-end. A case usually had twelve bottles, so ten cases meant 120 bottles.

120 bottles divided by five people meant 24 bottles each.

Usually, 24 bottles of beer would be a challenge to finish, but now it was even harder since they'd already had ten each.

Agnes's smile froze, and she couldn't even muster a plea for mercy.

Dennis turned to leave, but Leopold added, "Get good beer. Buy Amazon Xobor canned beer."

"Yes, Mr. Neville!" As the door closed, Dennis felt a pang of sympathy for them.

Bella looked like she was about to faint, and Justin collapsed on the sofa.

The other three didn't know much about the beer market and were puzzled by Bella and Justin's reactions.

Xobor canned beer came in cases of 24 bottles; ten cases meant 240 bottles, 48 bottles per person.

'No way!' Agnes thought. She couldn't let the others suffer because of her.

She stepped forward, "Leopold, I organized this gathering. They came because of me. I'll take on the beer myself. Let them go!"

Clara wanted to speak but stopped, and Bella quietly held her hand and shook her head.

Couldn't Clara see that Agnes and Leopold had an unusual relationship? It wasn't their place to intervene.

Leopold sat on a single sofa, leisurely lit a cigarette, and didn't respond to Agnes.

His silence made Agnes anxious, "If you don't say anything, I'll take it as your agreement!"

"Alright, then you can handle the ten cases of beer yourself," he said indifferently, tapping his phone to send a message to Dennis: [You can go home and rest.]

"Hey, Mr. Neville, Agnes is a girl. I'll drink with her!" Justin, hearing that Agnes was taking it all on herself, suddenly stopped trembling and jumped up from the sofa.

Bella immediately followed, "Mr. Neville, two people drinking ten cases of beer could be fatal."

Jeremy said, "We'll share the burden."

Clara said, "Count me in!"

Leopold's gaze roamed over the five of them several times before he finally sneered, "It seems you all have a good relationship."

It wasn't the first time she'd heard it, but hearing Leopold say it, Agnes couldn't help but feel a smug sense of pride, "Of course, we're very good friends!"

"If you don't want to drink, that's fine." Leopold finally relented.

Just as they were secretly rejoicing, Leopold said to Agnes, "Study abroad next year."

Although he had nearly ten years of management experience, he managed subordinates, not his wife, Agnes. She really gave him a headache.

Recently, she hadn't been skipping classes or getting into fights. But thinking back to her nonchalant attitude in French class and looking at the messy living room and the drunken crowd now.She really gave him a headache, but he couldn't bring himself to divorce her.

If Leopold sent her abroad, without the company of these friends, maybe she would finally be behave.

At the Smith Manor, Justin dragged himself upstairs, legs like jelly. When he saw his dad, Peter Smith, he practically collapsed into his arms, almost in tears. "Dad, I swear, no more alcohol for a month!"

Peter, who was about to push him away, raised an eyebrow. "What happened?"

"Dad, have you ever dealt with Mr. Neville?" Justin asked.

"Mr. Neville? Which one? Leopold?" Peter replied.

"Yeah!" Justin said. Just mentioning Leopold made him stand up straight, letting go of his dad.

Peter looked puzzled. "Why bring him up all of a sudden?"

"Leopold is a devil. I really feel for anyone who has to deal with him."

Peter slapped Justin on the shoulder. "Justin, how dare you say that! Sounds like he really got to you. Let me warn you, you can mess with anyone but not Leopold, or you might find yourself in serious trouble one day!"

Justin was scared but tried to play it cool, snorting in fake disdain.

His phone buzzed, and he checked it. A few seconds later, his eyes widened, and he blurted out, "Oh my God!"

If it weren't for tonight, he wouldn't have believed it, but now he had no choice.

In the WhatsApp group, a message from 'LightChaser' popped up: [Leopold is my legal husband!]

Justin's complaint followed as expected, "That guy is a hopeless idiot!"

And 'LightChaser' slowly replied: [I'm figuring out how to get a peaceful divorce!]

At Tranquil Haven Estates, Agnes was stuck cleaning up the living room. As she tossed cans into the recycling bin, she typed a message to her friends in the group, [You don't get it. My marriage with him has nothing to do with love. I don't have feelings for him, and he feels the same about me. I'm still young; why should I be tied down?]

Bella, seeing Agnes's first message, jumped up from her bed, her hands shaking so much she could barely hold her phone. She finally managed to send a shocked emoji, [Agnes, are you crazy? Who cares love these days? What good is love? Even if you and Leopold don't have love, he has money, looks, and power, which is enough to make you happy for life!]

Agnes slumped on the sofa, her eyes empty, reading Clara's message, [I can't believe I often go shopping with Mrs. Neville. I'm shocked myself.]

Jeremy, thinking about Agnes being married to the cold Leopold, wanted to howl at the sky: [Agnes, think again. Probably only someone like Mr. Neville can keep you in check!]

Reading the messages on the screen, Agnes's resolve to divorce only grew stronger. She didn't want to live under Leopold's control for the rest of her life!

Justin, after holding back for a long time, finally sent a message: [Agnes, if you dare to divorce, you're asking for trouble!]

Agnes threw her phone onto the sofa in frustration. Why was no one supporting her? After a moment, she picked up her constantly vibrating phone and replied: [You guys go to sleep. Leopold doesn't agree to the divorce anyway, so it's pointless to think about it!]

The group chat fell silent, as if the whole world was holding its breath.

Agnes was silent.

She had to cut ties with them!
