Chapter 94
Agnes felt pretty down after getting turned down. She tried to explain, "Stuff I buy with my own money means more to me."
Last time she sang, she made less than four grand. Sure, that was enough to buy what she wanted, but she aimed for something a bit nicer, something that would be worthy of Leopold.
She had made up her mind; she needed to show Leopold how she felt. Waiting around wasn’t gonna cut it.
If she missed her shot, she’d have no one to blame but herself.
"Alright, just promise you won't drink," Justin said. Leopold clearly wasn’t a fan of Agnes drinking; that was a hard no.
"Deal! No problem!" Agnes said, patting her chest confidently.
That night, Agnes was on her best behavior. As soon as she saw Leopold, she fussed over his injury. During dinner, she was super attentive.
Even though Leopold politely declined, she was still happy to give him a back and shoulder massage.
Leopold put some fish on her plate. "You don’t need to try so hard to please me. I remember you were late for class."
Agnes felt a bit deflated.
She poked at the fish with her fork, trying to bargain, "I won’t go to the movies or the Martyrs' Cemetery. Is that okay?"
"Okay," he replied simply.
Agnes was thrilled, but then Leopold casually said, "Let’s go see the human-snake battle, the one where people kiss snakes."
"No way!" Just thinking about it made Agnes shiver. She knew Leopold wouldn’t just let her watch; he’d make her participate.
She’d seen it before on a trip to Astrania. It was part of the tour. She hid behind a pillar, playing on her phone, and accidentally saw Justin kissing a snake. It freaked her out so much that she dropped her phone. After that, she avoided Justin for over two weeks!
Agnes knew better than to mess with Leopold. When he got serious, he didn’t hold back.
The fish, which should’ve been tasty, now felt bland in her mouth. "How can I get you to spare me?"
Leopold glanced at her, "Depends on how you behave."
Hearing that, Agnes seemed to get the hint. She suddenly stood up, wrapped her arms around Leopold’s neck, and made him look at her.
She kissed his lips three times with her soft, sweet mouth.
But instead of being happy, Leopold looked annoyed, "Agnes, did you wipe your mouth after eating?"
She probably hadn’t.
Agnes quickly tried to fix it. She grabbed a napkin, planning to wipe her mouth, but then thought it’d be better to wipe Leopold’s mouth first!
She wiped his lips before wiping her own.
Tossing the napkin aside, she hugged his neck, "Leopold, how did I do?"
"I can’t feel your sincerity." He wanted more than just a half-hearted kiss.
Feeling defeated, Agnes buried her face in Leopold’s neck, rubbing against him. Her breath accidentally brushed against his skin. Leopold’s hand paused; she was definitely doing it on purpose.
Then, he put down his fork and cleaned his hands with a wet wipe.
He pulled the fidgety Agnes into his arms and made her sit on his lap. Agnes shyly glanced at the door, relieved it was a private room with no one else around.
Leopold's big hand wrapped around her small one, and he kissed her deeply, lingeringly.
After a moment, his husky voice whispered in her ear, "Shall we go home?"
"Okay!" She got the hint without needing more words.
She'd much rather keep kissing Leopold than kiss a snake, so she agreed without a second thought.
Leopold didn't even let her finish her meal. He whisked her out of the hotel and drove them home.
On the way, Agnes played on her phone, too shy to talk, thinking about what was coming next.
But just as the villa came into view, Leopold's phone rang. She looked up and saw Lydia's name on the screen.
Leopold answered right away.
Lydia's anxious voice came through, "Mr. Neville, there are people outside my house, two or three of them, looking for something. I've been waiting for half an hour, but they still haven't left."
Leopold's face darkened, and he turned the car around, "Go to the security office at the entrance of the community and wait for me. I'll be there soon."
"Okay, hurry!" Lydia said.
"Okay!" Leopold replied.
The call ended, and Agnes's excitement vanished.
Leopold explained, "It’s probably those dangerous people from last time. We need to pick up Lydia."
"Wait, Leopold, just drop me off by the roadside." Agnes really didn't want to see Lydia but didn't stop Leopold from going.
Leopold glanced at her, not getting why she was being difficult, but he still coaxed her, "Agnes, be good. If Lydia gets caught by them, she'll be in great danger."
Agnes stayed silent.
When they arrived, they saw Lydia curled up on a chair in the security office, hugging her knees tightly.
"Lydia!" At the sound of her name, Lydia looked up sharply. Seeing who it was, she immediately jumped up from the chair and threw herself into Leopold's arms, hugging him tightly, "Mr. Neville, you're finally here. I was so scared!"
"Don't be afraid, I'm here now!" Leopold's gentle comfort made Agnes, who followed closely behind, feel a mix of emotions. How could she stay calm when her husband was speaking softly to another woman?
The outside world rumored that Leopold was cold and unfeeling.
In reality, Leopold was indeed cold, but only to others.
Leopold picked Lydia up in his arms and turned to instruct the security guard, "Open the car door."
"Yes, Mr. Neville." The security guard quickly opened the back door.
Fortunately, Leopold hadn't forgotten about Agnes, "Agnes, come here."
Agnes stayed silent.
She was even more reluctant to follow. Just as she hesitated, her phone rang; it was a call from Bella. "Agnes, where did you buy that red wine last time?"
"Bella, are you drunk? Where are you? I'll come pick you up!" Agnes said.
Bella, puzzled, didn't get Agnes's words, "No, Agnes, I was asking..."
"You are at your house. Okay, I'll be right over," Agnes said.
Without waiting for Bella to respond, Agnes hung up the phone and looked apologetically at Leopold, who had parked the car, "Sorry, Bella is drunk at home and feeling down. I'll keep her company. I won't be coming back tonight; I'll stay at Bella's place."
