Chapter 44
In the afternoon, during Leopold's class, Agnes decided not to argue with him anymore, lest the narrow-minded Leopold give her trouble. Holding a book in one hand and a Häagen-Dazs in the other, she obediently walked towards the classroom.
Lost in thought, she strolled leisurely along the maple path, even after the campus bell had rung for quite some time.
Passing by the playground, she chose the shortest path straight through, intending to head directly to the classroom.
Her phone vibrated in her pocket. She took it out and saw a message from Justin in the class group chat: [Agnes, where are you? You're already three minutes late for Leopold's class.]
Only then did Agnes realize how much time had passed. Nervously licking her ice cream, she was about to run when she thought, since she was already late, what difference would three minutes or ten minutes make?
With the spoon in her mouth, she operated her phone with one hand and replied: [I'm on my way to the classroom. I'll be there soon.]
"Agnes, how's the ice cream?" That familiar yet cold voice startled Agnes so much that she almost swallowed the spoon.
Could Leopold be a campus ghost? Everywhere she went, she could run into Leopold!
Looking up, Agnes was stunned to see not only Leopold but also the entire class, neatly lined up in the middle of the playground.
Could this class be about practicing standing posture?
"Häagen-Dazs ice cream tastes good, doesn't it?" Leopold said again.
Agnes, not understanding, nodded dumbly.
The classmates' snickers rose and fell, all wondering when Agnes had become so foolish.
Leopold's face remained calm as he pointed to a distant tree, "Go stand over there and enjoy it slowly!"
Agnes moved to the tree, savoring her ice cream leisurely in the sunlight while watching Leopold correct everyone's posture.
His posture was as perfect as a soldier's. Had he been in the military?
After finishing her Häagen-Dazs and just throwing away the wrapper, Leopold called her forward, "Since it tastes so good, buy two Häagen-Dazs ice creams for each classmate."
"I..." Agnes started.
Leopold didn't let her refuse, "If you refuse, the whole class will run twenty laps around the playground with you!"
Twenty laps! The playground was at least 1300 feet per lap, meaning five miles! The classmates instantly erupted.
"Agnes, you're the long-distance champion, but we aren't!"
"Don't drag us down!"
"Yeah, hurry up and buy the Häagen-Dazs ice cream! Aren't you quite wealthy?"
"If you don't buy it, your stinginess won't match your BMW!"
Voices of doubt rose, making Agnes feel like she was being roasted over a fire. If she didn't buy the ice cream, she would seem like the stingiest person in the world.
However, even the cheapest Häagen-Dazs scoop cost eight dollars. A hundred classmates meant sixteen hundred dollars!
Either run five miles or spend sixteen hundred dollars on ice cream.
'Leopold, you bastard!' She glared fiercely at the expressionless Leopold, cleared her throat, and asked, "Who wants to run twenty laps with me?" She just wanted to save some money; after buying gifts for Leopold, she was already strapped for cash.
Five miles might be doable for her, especially with Jeremy, but it would be very difficult for others.
The classmates were unusually united, all saying in unison, "No one!"
Agnes fell silent.
Nearby, Dennis watched the scene, unable to hold back his laughter.
Dennis admired Leopold's tactics as he watched Agnes reluctantly go to buy the ice cream. On the surface, it seemed like a punishment for Agnes, but in reality, it allowed her to enjoy the ice cream openly, with Leopold footing the bill.
Although this was the truth, Agnes hadn't realized it yet. After all, she had been independent for three years and didn't immediately think that Leopold would pay for the ice cream.
When she swiped the card, it felt like a knife to her heart.
Watching the Häagen-Dazs delivery person walk towards the school, she felt like she was crying. Who could tell her why there was someone as strange as Leopold in the world?
On the playground, Agnes sat with her chin in her hands while the classmates were thrilled. After all, many had never tasted such expensive ice cream.
Strangely, even though she paid for it, many girls surrounded Leopold, thanking him repeatedly.
If they knew her living expenses came from Leopold, it would make sense, but they didn't know!
Realizing suddenly that the money spent just now was indeed Leopold's, she stood up and ran towards him.
"Make way, make way!" Pushing aside the girls surrounding him, she stood firmly in front of Leopold.
Leopold glanced at Agnes, staying silent.
Agnes moved closer, lowered her voice, and curiously asked, "Leopold, are you really that dumb?"
A flash of coldness passed through Leopold's eyes, followed by a warning look. He said calmly, "Do you want to get hit?"
Agnes quickly shook her head, "You made me buy ice cream for everyone, but it was your money. In the end, wasn't it you who treated everyone? Why did you suddenly become so generous?"
"Because you were late," Leopold said.
"This has nothing to do with being late." Agnes stopped mid-sentence, realizing what Leopold meant.
Sure, being late should have had consequences. But since she neither ran five miles nor paid any money, it didn't really feel like a punishment.
Was Leopold really that easygoing? She suspiciously examined Leopold. The sudden kindness made her uneasy. When her gaze fell on his upright posture, another question slipped out, "Were you in the military?"
"Yes," he said.
"Why didn't you stay? Why come back to be a CEO?" She secretly imagined that he was already handsome, and if he were in a military uniform, how charming he would be!
Suddenly, a sense of regret washed over her. She regretted not seeing him in his military uniform.
Leopold glanced at the curious Agnes, expressionless, and said, "If you're really that curious, tonight I can let you get to know me better."
If he had just said, "Get to know me better," Agnes might not have overthought it, but adding "tonight" clearly had a different meaning! Men were naturally good at hinting, and this sentence definitely had another implication!
Thinking along those lines, her face turned red, and she coughed lightly, turning to leave, "No need, goodbye."
However, the words that came from behind her left Agnes thunderstruck.
When she turned back, Agnes was no longer there. Leopold, who had just been talking to her, was now directing the classmates in other exercises.
Reflecting carefully, she was sure she hadn't imagined those words.
From that day on, Agnes's life motto changed from 'Walk others' paths, leaving them no path to walk' to 'I must conquer Leopold.'
After night study, Agnes originally planned to return to the dorm to rest but was called back to the villa by Robert. "Agnes, Mr. Neville has finished work for the day and is coming back. He asked me to remind you about tonight's French lesson."
Agnes fell silent.
Why was she so unlucky?
Returning to the villa, she found that Leopold had not yet come home. She lay on the bed, tossing and turning.
Finally, she dialed Justin's number, "Justin, any news about the job?"
