Chapter 68

Every class she brought up was one she used to despise.

Agnes laughed, "Guess I don't need to play bodyguard anymore!" Back in the day, if she hadn't been so into martial arts, how could she have protected him? And his delicate sister, too.

Yeah, when she was sixteen, she had a thing with Michael. It lasted two years until they split just before she turned eighteen. During those years, she was like a tomboy, always looking out for him and his sister.

In the end, he made fun of her for not being girly enough.

Michael's heart sank, and he mumbled an apology, full of regret, "Agnes, I'm sorry. I messed up. I didn't treat you right. For the past three years, I've been kicking myself for it, really."

Sure, he had plenty of girls around during those three years, but none of them cared for him like Agnes did.

She wasn't a great cook, but she'd buy him meals and bring them over. She was naturally bubbly, but she'd act all quiet in front of his mom for his sake. Her martial arts skills were top-notch, and she'd always step in to save him from trouble, despite his cushy life. She couldn't hold her liquor, but she'd drink for him, building up her tolerance over time.

Her kindness was endless.

He had lost the pure-hearted Agnes, but now that he was back, he was determined to win her back, hold her tight, and never let go.

"Michael, it's really too late for all this." Every time she said his name, it still hurt. The scar he left on her heart was still there, but that was it.

Apart from the pain, there was nothing else.

She walked past a dessert shop, eyeing the tempting treats in the glass case, especially the durian-flavored ones she used to love. Michael always complained about the smell, worried she'd gain weight, and even banned her from eating them around him.

That night, she could tell Leopold didn't like durian either, but he still tried it with her.

And during that dinner on the fifth floor of Alioth, Leopold had durian-flavored desserts ready for her.

Leopold was a few years older, and she had to admit, he was more considerate. Durian-flavored desserts often showed up at his place.

The first night she snuck into his room, he noticed right away. After that, she never got caught again. Looking back, maybe he let her sneak in on purpose.

How did Michael's sister treat her back then?

At Michael's birthday party, Agnes couldn't go home because it was late, so she stayed in the guest room. In the middle of the night, with thunder and rain, she was too scared to sleep and didn't dare to go to Michael, so she knocked on Faith Wright's door.

Agnes hadn't even laid down when Faith shoved her out and locked the door, telling her not to bother her again.

In a daze, Agnes found herself missing Leopold.

That bossy, self-centered, unreasonable Leopold.

After that, Agnes didn't give Michael a chance to explain and hung up the phone. Looking at the missed call on the screen, she decided that if Leopold called again, she'd answer.

But during her two-day stay in Sparkling Metropolis, Leopold never called.

On the third night, after dinner, Agnes gently stroked her slightly rounded belly and walked into a jewelry store. Under the dim light, she pointed to a cross necklace, "Hey, can I see this one?"

The bald, chubby shop owner grinned, "Sure thing, miss. Our jewelry here is top-notch."

"How much is this?" she asked.

"Not much, just fifty-six hundred dollars!" The shop owner was clearly trying to rip her off. Knowing a bit about jewelry, Agnes held the cross necklace up to the light and saw it was low quality, yet it was priced at fifty-six hundred dollars.

She put the necklace down. "I'll look at something else."

Seeing her turn away, the shop owner's face twisted, and he snapped, "Miss, how can you look without buying?"

Agnes was baffled. "Why should I buy if I'm not satisfied? What's the logic in that?"

The shop owner slammed the table. "If you don't buy, why are you looking? Today, you have to buy it!"

"This is coercion!" She glanced around the store and noticed a few shady-looking guys playing cards at a nearby table. Meeting their eyes, she felt a sense of foreboding.

"Yeah, I'm coercing you! Pay up! Fifty-six hundred dollars, not a penny less!" The shop owner, seeing her well-dressed, planned to scam her out of her money.

Facing this situation, Agnes just wanted to get out quickly and didn't want to argue, so she turned to leave.

However, the shop owner pulled out a remote and locked the automatic door. "If you don't buy today, you can't leave!"

Agnes's fiery temper flared up, and she angrily rushed over, grabbing the shop owner's collar and warning him sternly, "Open the door! Now!"

The other four card players saw Agnes making a move and immediately dropped their cards, standing up. In an instant, she was surrounded by them.

With no other choice, she had to brace herself and fight.

She swiftly knocked the shop owner to the ground and was about to deal with another person when the remaining four, seeing her impressive skills, pulled out their phones and started calling, "We've got someone who knows martial arts here. Get Jerry and Juan over here as soon as possible!"

'Damn!' Agnes let go of the man she was holding, her eyes scanning for an escape route. Spotting a gap in the crowd, she darted towards the back door, her movements quick and silent.

But it wasn't a back door – it was an inner room. The door slammed shut before she could even turn around.

A man's deep voice came through outside, "You stay in there! Pay up, and we'll let you go!"

She hurriedly fumbled for her phone in her pocket, ready to call the police, but then she heard someone say, "Go ahead and call. Let's see who dares to interfere with our territory! We left your phone with you, because we're not afraid of you calling the police!"

She didn't believe them and did call the police. Although the police promised to come immediately, she waited for over an hour with no sign of them.

The people outside lost their patience and barged in, intending to rob her outright.

Before long, two burly men over six feet tall stood in front of her. One of them, a rough-looking guy chewing betel nut, said, "Bitch, hand over your wallet!"

Agnes was stunned for a moment before she understood their intention. She quickly took out her wallet from her backpack and handed it over, "I'm really broke, just sixty dollars here. It's not that I don't want to buy it; I really can't afford it."

Jerry sneered, "Don't try to fool me with that! Hand over your phone and unlock the payment app!"

These guys weren't stupid!

She clutched her phone tightly, a flash of inspiration in her mind, and opened her contact list, trying to scare them, "I have someone backing me up. How about I make a call and have someone come teach you a lesson?"

Unexpectedly, Jerry showed no fear, "Go ahead, call them! Let's see who dares to come! One person is fifty-six hundred dollars, two people..."

Agnes couldn't help but interrupt, "Two people are eleven thousand two hundred dollars." How could this guy with such poor math skills dare to rob?
