Chapter 145 Leaving Without Any Attachments
Two hours later.
In a restaurant in River State, Coco took a sip of wine, blinked her big eyes, and asked Alexander, "What's wrong? Is the meal I treated you to not good? Why do you have that expression?"
Alexander, his face flushed, took a sip of wine and then responded softly, "That old man is about to be executed."
Coco was stunned. "Robert's uncle?"
"Yes." Alexander nodded.
Andrew, sitting next to them, sighed but didn't say anything, just kept his head down and drank.
Although Coco didn't know Benjamin, she had heard some things about him, so her playful expression faded, and she said lightly, "Maybe it's a kind of relief."
"Let's drink," Alexander said, pouring more wine.
With that, the three continued drinking, and what was supposed to be a celebratory farewell dinner became inexplicably somber.
The drinking session lasted until late at night. After Coco paid the bill, Alexander glanced at his watch and said, "Help me arrange it; I'm leaving tonight, heading straight to Stardust City."
Andrew was taken aback. "Are you going?"
"I'm going to bring Robert back to Pine City," Alexander replied briefly.
"Should I tell Robert?" Andrew asked again.
"Sooner or later, he has to know. There's no point in hiding it. Just tell him," Alexander said.
"Okay." Andrew nodded.
Listening to their conversation, Coco took out her phone and stepped aside to make a call and make arrangements.
A few minutes later, the three of them walked out of the restaurant together. Coco turned to Alexander and said, "I haven't told you this, but some people in my family are against our cooperation because they think your relationship with The VitaPharm Company is too hostile, and we might get dragged into it."
Alexander, reeking of alcohol, replied, "I can understand that."
"Don't put too much pressure on me," Coco gently reminded him, "I have a brother and elders above me."
"I'll do my best to handle things well," Alexander promised seriously.
"Alright." Coco extended her hand. "I wish you a safe journey, and I hope our cooperation goes smoothly."
Alexander shook Coco's hand, glanced at the car that had just arrived, and suddenly said, "By the way, I have a gift for you."
Coco was surprised. "A gift for me?"
"Wait a moment." Alexander stepped down the stairs, opened the back door of the car, and took out a small bag before returning.
"What is it?"
"I noticed you always wear a scarf, so I had someone buy one in Stardust City," Alexander replied briefly, "I'm not rich, so I can't give you anything fancy. This is just a token of my appreciation."
Coco opened the delicately wrapped bag, took out a pink wool scarf, and said with a slightly surprised look, "You really surprised me. I thought you were the type to brag and drink all day, but you're quite thoughtful."
"You helped me twice. I didn't say anything to express my gratitude, but I remember it," Alexander replied, his face a bit flushed, "I don't mean anything else and just wanted to thank you."
Coco blinked her clever eyes and suddenly asked, "What do you mean by 'I don't mean anything else'? Why did you add that?"
"Just wear the scarf. I have to go." Alexander turned and headed for the car.
Coco smiled, pressed her lips, and fully opened the scarf, examining it carefully. "Your taste is a bit flashy, huh."
Andrew, seeing Alexander steal the spotlight, cursed in frustration, "Bastard!"
Alexander got in the car and waved to Coco. "See you next time."
"I like the scarf. You've earned my initial approval," Coco said with a smile, tying the scarf around her neck.
"Let's go. I'll take you out of River State," Andrew said, realizing that Coco was no longer paying attention to him, and got in the car with Alexander.
Pine City.
In a low-end meat shop next to No. 88, five or six older prostitutes were chatting noisily.
"Luke, are you a virgin?" a flamboyantly dressed woman asked curiously.
Luke, a thug who wasn't intimidated by anyone, had been hanging around the shop for a while, so he shamelessly replied, "I have masturbated before. Does it count?"
"No, it doesn't," the woman said with a smile, "Why don't you ask your dad for some money, and I'll do business with you?"
"Don't tease me," Luke said while sweeping the floor, "When I go crazy, I'm not human."
The woman covered her mouth and laughed, "Luke is really interesting."
At that moment, a noise came from upstairs. Luke looked up and saw Chloe's mother, the shop owner, being kicked onto the landing between the first and second floors.
"Are you crazy?" Penelope yelled, holding her head.
"What's wrong with asking you for some money?" a burly, drunken man asked as he stumbled down the stairs, "I'm telling you, if I didn't look after this place, it would be shut down tomorrow."
Penelope gritted her teeth, looking at the drunken man, but he didn't dare to say anything.
"Damn it, ungrateful," the man scolded, scratching his crotch as he staggered down and headed for the door.
At that moment, Chloe, standing behind the bar, shouted with tears on her face, "If you hit my mom again, I'll kill you!"
The man glanced at Chloe and sneered, "You will be a whore when you grow up."
With that, he pushed the door open and left.
Luke coldly watched his back, then walked up to the landing and helped Penelope up. "Penelope, are you okay?"
"That bastard is not human. He's an animal!" Penelope cursed as she stood up.
After a few words of comfort, Luke went back downstairs and stood by the bar, saying to Chloe, "Don't cry, Chloe. Penelope's fine."
Two days later.
The scorching sun rose in the east, and sunlight poured through the windows, casting a golden glow on the prison corridor.
Benjamin got up and washed his face when he heard someone outside shouting, "Benjamin, stand by the door, awaiting execution."
Inside the cell, everyone stood up slowly upon hearing this.
"Go ahead and eat," Benjamin said with a smile, turning back with a calm expression, "Thank you all for taking care of me these past three months."
Everyone looked at him silently, not saying a word.
With a creaking sound, the rusty iron door opened, and a guard waved to Benjamin, "Any more words?"
"No, it's time to eat," Benjamin said as he bent down and stepped out of the door, "Let's go."
With that, the guard led Benjamin down the golden corridor, slowly walking outside.
A few seconds later, a unified shout erupted from the cell.
"Benjamin!"
Benjamin didn't look back, standing tall and straight as he walked away.
An hour later, in a desolate area of Stardust City, three crisp gunshots rang out.
Benjamin was gone, dying on a cold but sunny morning.
One day later.
Alexander retrieved Benjamin's ashes from the designated crematorium and returned to Pine City alone.
