Chapter 170 Two Little Brothers

Alexander slouched in his chair, eyeing Jasper and debating whether to drop the hint about Joe to steer the team. Surely, Joe had done the community a favor by getting rid of a threat, but he'd also caused Alexander a ton of trouble in River State. Besides, they'd never met, and Joe was clearly another threat, so Alexander wasn't about to see things from Joe's perspective.

Jasper, standing by the blackboard, shot Alexander a frosty look. "Captain James, drop whatever you're doing. We need all hands on deck for this case. And Team Three better get with Team Four's pace. None of that 'no mistakes means success' nonsense here."

Alexander bristled at Jasper's tone. "Captain Lane, let's stick to solving the case and skip the lectures on work culture. Team Three's record speaks for itself."

Jasper scowled and snapped, "I'll have Team Two send over the gun trafficking files. We meet tomorrow, and I expect some plans."

"Got it," Alexander replied.

"Alright, meeting adjourned," Jasper said, turning to leave.

John scratched his nose and turned to Alexander. "Jasper's got it out for us. He's always on Team Three's case. If we crack this, he'll take the credit. If we don't, he'll throw you under the bus."

"Just do our jobs and move on," Alexander said. "Guys like him are all about office politics. Not worth our time."

"I'll go talk to Team Two," John nodded.

"Wait. I forgot something important," Alexander said, suddenly standing up.

"What's up?" John asked.

"With Uriel's accident, I forgot about the new guys." Alexander grabbed his stuff. "You handle Team Two; I'll check on the rookies."

"Got it."

Half an hour later...

In the police dorm, two young guys in their early twenties were lying on their beds, bored and chatting.

The door swung open, and Alexander, in uniform, walked in. "Loren Schneider, Elbert Perry."

"Yes!"

"Yes!"

The two jumped up, barefoot, and saluted. "Captain James, morning!"

Alexander had brought the new officers from Stardust City, so they'd met before.

"Relax," Alexander said with a smile, waving his hand. "No need to be so tense."

Hearing this, the two lowered their arms. Elbert smiled and said, "Have a seat, Captain James."

Alexander sat on the dorm bed, looked at the two, and waved his hand. "Don't make me invite you; sit down."

"Okay."

The two still seemed a bit stiff as they sat down opposite Alexander, backs straight.

"We didn't get much time to chat in the car," Alexander said, taking a puff from his e-cigarette. "Where are you guys from?"

"I'm from Stardust City," Loren, who was slightly chubby but had fair skin and delicate features, replied.

"And you?" Alexander asked Elbert.

"I'm...from a village in the suburbs of Stardust City," Elbert said, looking down, seemingly a bit ashamed of his background.

Taking a drag from his e-cigarette, Alexander smiled. "Being able to afford police academy means your families are well-off. Why chose this work? It's dangerous."

"My dad says being a cop is a good job, no worries about food and drink," Loren replied nonchalantly. "They were willing to support me through police academy, so I went for it."

After some hesitation, Elbert looked up at Alexander. "My thinking is simple. I believe joining the system is the only way to have a chance at becoming an official and making a name for myself."

"You're straightforward," Alexander said, pausing before smiling.

"Nothing to hide," Elbert said, placing his hands properly on his legs. "Kids like us, born without opportunities, have to find our own way."

"True." Alexander nodded. "Alright, from now on, you'll be with me. As long as you follow the rules, everything else is negotiable."

"Thank you, Captain James," Elbert responded politely and respectfully.

"Captain James, when do we start?" Loren asked.

Alexander stood up and looked at the two. "There's a case we need to follow up on. Change your clothes and report to the team. Go to John."

"Okay."

"Okay."

The two nodded in unison.

"Tonight at the cafeteria, we'll have a team dinner so you can get to know everyone," Alexander said with a smile, turning to leave.

"Haha!"

Elbert burst into laughter.

Pine City District.

After taking a shower, Joe walked into the living room and sat on the couch.

"You're on the news," the burly man next to him said lazily.

"Did they post the photo?" Joe asked calmly.

"Yeah." The burly man nodded. "Just yours."

Joe picked up a pack of cigarettes, thought for a moment, and said, "We can't stay here anymore. Pack up, and let's go."

"Okay."

"And Zephyr's death won't be in vain," Joe said, exhaling smoke and turning to his companion. "Let's stay low-key for now and let the case simmer."

"I did some investigation..." the burly man said, sitting up and whispering seriously into Joe's ear.
