Chapter 181 Emily
On the steps.
William glanced down at Adam and said, "Mr. Wilde, these thugs have someone backing them."
"We need to handle the thugs and the mess," Adam gasped, clutching his chest. "William, do me a favor."
"Sure, what is it?"
"Two guys outside know the truth," Adam replied quickly. "They can't be left alive."
"Are they with Zephyr?" Milton asked immediately.
"Yes," Adam nodded. "Notify our friends in the district council, prep the media, and make sure there's no link between me and Zephyr's corporation."
"How do we do that? Zephyr is your son," Milton said, missing the point.
"Idiot!" Adam coughed and shouted, "Hubert needed political cover to sell guns. Zephyr got tricked into investing, but the family didn't know, and he didn't know about Hubert's deals. Spend big on media. We can't take the fall, got it?"
"Got it," Milton nodded.
Adam grabbed William's hand, eyes wide. "William, help me through this, and the Riverside District market is yours."
"Mr. Wilde, don't worry. I got your back," William promised without hesitation.
Inside the police station.
Riley slammed the table. "Alexander, who authorized you to raid the gun trafficking den?"
Alexander saw Riley's agitation and felt even more certain his decision was right.
"Answer me!"
"I found clues in the notebook, so I took people there."
"Why didn't you report it?!"
"Because I don't trust Captain Lane," Alexander said plainly, not mentioning Samuel's instructions.
"Bullshit! Jasper is your partner and superior. What right do you have to doubt him?" Riley was furious. "You're creating conflicts on purpose."
"I have every right to question him," Alexander shot back. "Just a few days ago, Captain Lane was publicly reprimanded for taking bribes. I have reason to suspect he might take bribes during investigations."
Riley stared at Alexander, almost fainting from anger.
"We raided the gun den and caught them red-handed," Alexander said coldly. "So my decision was correct. If you think I acted without authorization, let the police inspector intervene. I'll cooperate. Director Sharp, I have other matters to attend to, so I'll be leaving now."
With that, Alexander turned and left.
Riley, furious, ran his hand through his thinning hair and cursed, "Samuel, you put this guy here to piss me off! Fine, I'll play along."
In the office area of the fourth team.
Alexander quickly instructed John, Xavier, Loren, Elbert, and others, "Forget everything else. Find Milo and Duke. If we catch them, Adam's screwed. They're core members of Zephyr's corporation and know about Adam and Hubert's cooperation."
"Yes!"
"Yes!"
With the case heating up, everyone except Loren and Elbert was pumped. The veteran officers were itching for payback after the Patrick family had them on the ropes, costing them Benjamin and Matthew.
That night.
John, Xavier, and the rest didn't sleep. They hit up their informants, launching a full-scale search for Milo and Duke.
Meanwhile.
Inside the web broadcasting station.
Emily was munching on takeout, staring at her report with a goofy grin.
"Emily, still here?" A woman in her thirties walked over.
Emily looked up and smiled. "Leader Weaver, you haven't left either? I'm working on a news piece."
"You young folks are so driven," Susan Weaver said with a smile. "But you need to take care of yourself. Staying up late ages you fast."
"I'm fine. I sleep well at night," Emily replied, a bit puzzled since Susan was usually pretty aloof.
"Just eating this fast food?" Susan glanced at Emily's meal and laughed. "This stuff is unhealthy. I haven't eaten either. Let's grab some snacks across the street, my treat."
"No need, I don't want to waste your time. Besides..."
"Don't be so polite." Susan smiled. "I'll go change, meet you downstairs in a bit."
With that, Susan left gracefully.
Emily didn't really want to go. She was excited about her first big news story. But since Susan approved segments, she couldn't refuse.
About half an hour later.
Susan led Emily to a café across from the station, a spot for elite professionals.
As soon as they sat down in a private room, Susan smiled at Emily. "I'm going to the restroom. Order whatever you like, it's on me."
"Okay, Leader Weaver." Emily nodded.
As soon as Susan left, Emily looked at the dessert menu.
In less than two minutes, Adam's nephew Milton walked in.
"Who are you?" Emily asked, puzzled.
Milton closed the door, took off his shoulder bag, and sat across from Emily with a smile. "I knew Hubert, who was murdered today at Pine City North Station."
Emily was stunned.
"Leader Weaver and I go way back, and I know some of your station's leaders," Milton said politely. "I'm here to ask for a favor."
"What... What favor?"
"Can you hold off on the news you're working on, or change its direction?" Milton placed his shoulder bag on the chair next to Emily and hinted. "I understand the rules, it's all in the bag."
Emily blinked, glanced at the black leather bag, and couldn't help but nod. "So that's how Leader Weaver got her limited edition bag."
Milton was taken aback and then smiled. "If this works out, I'll get you a bag even better than Leader Weaver's."
On the roadside, inside a car.
After finishing a call, William turned and asked, "We found them. Who's going?"
Raymond didn't respond, and just as Enrique was about to speak, Raymond stopped him.
Enrique glanced at Raymond, who subtly shook his head.
After a moment of eye contact, Enrique shook off Raymond's hand and said, "I'll handle it."
Raymond frowned but said nothing more.
