Chapter 225 The Chessboard, the Pieces, and the Player
Two days later, Pine City Women's Prison.
Even though he was still nursing his injuries, Alexander went ahead with his first interrogation of Jessica.
"Is your department so desperate that they send a patient to question me?" Jessica asked, all calm and smiling like she didn't have a care in the world.
"The higher-ups don't trust anyone else with this," Alexander replied, crossing his arms and giving her a once-over. "Want a smoke?"
"No, thanks," Jessica said, still polite.
Alexander studied her, getting this gut feeling that this wasn't going to be a walk in the park.
"Alexander, before they lock me up for good, can I see Adam one last time?" Jessica asked out of the blue.
Alexander was caught off guard and shook his head slowly. "I don't think that's gonna happen."
Jessica looked a bit let down but shrugged it off. "Then forget it."
Looking at her, Alexander couldn't help but ask, "Honestly, I'm curious. You and Adam have a big age gap, and he doesn't seem like a congressman type. Why are you so into him? Is it for the money? You don't seem to need it. And even from the outside, it's clear the Wilde family has been too flashy lately. Didn't you see trouble coming? Even if you had feelings for Adam, you could've kept your distance, right?"
Jessica tilted her head and smiled. "When you get older and climb higher, you'll get it. Spiritual needs trump rational ones. Adam might look like a beast and a corrupt official to outsiders, but he's good to me. And that kind of goodness is rare in my world."
Alexander stayed quiet.
"No one is all bad; everyone has their strengths and weaknesses," Jessica said softly. "Alexander, let's make a deal."
"What kind of deal?" Alexander asked.
"I'll spill everything about the Wilde family's gun trafficking and my crimes," Jessica said, her eyes steady. "But that's it. You can't dig any deeper."
Alexander was taken aback and shook his head. "I need to know how deep William's involved."
"You want to take him down with me?" Jessica shot back.
Alexander looked at her, thinking for a moment. "Do you know how Adam died?"
"Are you talking about William?" Jessica asked.
Alexander frowned, realizing she was a tough nut to crack. She'd already figured out his angle.
Jessica ran her fingers through her hair and said, "Adam was the chief councilman of Riverside District. The best outcome for him would be a death sentence in court. It would show the city's judicial system is fair and capable, and highlight the flaws in the district council, giving those behind Adam a reason to act against it. With all the chaos in Pine City lately, the media frenzy, and the headquarters' manhunt, they need a big name to calm the public. My part alone isn't enough, so Adam's arrest is your ideal result."
Alexander was speechless.
"So, Adam couldn't have been shot by you," Jessica continued. "When we fled Pine City, William sent David to help, which was odd. He had no reason to help Adam so much. Now it seems William wanted to use Adam to get back at you, but it didn't work out. I don't know if William personally killed Adam, but he was definitely involved."
"Then why not go after William? If you testify against him, I can nail him," Alexander said, frowning.
Jessica smiled. "William didn't want to go down with Adam, but he had no reason to kill him. Because I was captured, he had no motive to kill Adam anymore. But why did he still do it? Have you thought about that?"
Alexander stayed quiet.
"Killing Adam was his way of showing he's serious," Jessica said, looking Alexander dead in the eye. "You can't take him down now; he's got the Smith family backing him. And even though Adam's gone, some of his relatives are still around. Elijah and the others know my family's situation. So let's stop here and not drag anyone else into this."
"I don't think the leadership will be happy with your terms," Alexander said.
"You're still young. Trust me, they'll be satisfied," Jessica replied softly with a smile. "Politics is about results, not total destruction."
An hour and a half later.
In the office of the Chief of Police of Black Street District.
Alexander leaned his cane against the wall, frowned, and sat down. "Samuel, I think it's almost impossible to get Jessica to testify against William."
"Why's that?" Samuel asked, puffing on a cigarette.
"Jessica confessed voluntarily but only if we don't dig deeper. She says it's because Adam's family is still out there, and she doesn't want to drag them into this," Alexander explained. "And on my way back, I ran into Jessica's lawyer. He made it clear he needs to see her once a week to make sure we don't torture her. I looked into him, and he's got good media connections."
"That's a lawyer hired by William," Samuel said bluntly. "Adam's case has caused a big stir, and a lot of people are watching. It wouldn't be smart to use any harsh methods on Jessica."
"So what do you suggest?" Alexander asked.
"Let's stop here and forget about William for now," Samuel said after a moment of thought. "We'll deal with him later when we get the chance."
Alexander was stunned for a moment and then said urgently, "Samuel, Adam is nothing compared to the danger William poses by getting mixed up with the Smiths."
Samuel got up, walked slowly to the window, and sighed. "William managed to seize the opportunity in this situation. He's more troublesome than Terry!"
"What I mean is, even if Jessica doesn't confess, we should look for a breakthrough from other angles," Alexander stood up and added. "We can't let him get away with this."
"He won't get away with it," Samuel turned around, patting Alexander on the shoulder. "Alexander, I might be leaving the Black Street District Police Department."
Alexander was taken aback, "What do you mean?"
"I'm being transferred," Samuel replied.
"Transferred?" Alexander looked shocked. "Have you been promoted to the police headquarters?"
"No," Samuel shook his head.
"Then what? Why are you suddenly leaving?" Alexander asked urgently.
Standing in the sunlight by the window, Samuel smiled at Alexander and said, "I'm going to Riverside District to run for chief councilman."
Hearing this, Alexander's mind buzzed, and he stood there, staring at Samuel in shock, speechless for a long time.
In an instant, countless clues connected in Alexander's mind.
Joe suddenly appeared and killed Zephyr, followed by the Wilde family's gun trafficking case coming to light, and various clues seemed to converge on Alexander as if planned.
During several arrests, it was clear that someone in the police department was tipping off Joe, allowing him to escape multiple times and even counterattack Adam on Sunset Street, nearly killed William.
One by one, these events and scenes gradually connected.
The man behind the scene that Alexander couldn't figure out seemed to be standing right in front of him now.
