Chapter 34 The Bandit's Suicide
In the stairwell, Eric pushed against Alexander's chest, urgently whispering, "Can you just stay out of this and pretend you didn't see anything? Let me handle it."
"Eric, you know my character well. Not just anyone is worth this kind of risk." Alexander, with a serious expression, poked Eric's chest with his finger, "Calm down. Paul is a person of interest to the police. Can you really get him out of the station on your own? What if something goes wrong? What about your mom? Your sister? Your new wife? Are you willing to lose your job and your life?"
After a brief silence, with sweat on his forehead, Eric quickly responded to Alexander, "It's not entirely hopeless. Paul won't be at the department for long. He'll be transferred by tomorrow morning. I know some people at the police department who can help me figure out his transfer route. I have credentials, so it'll be easier for me to act on the road. You don't need to get involved."
"I don't get it. What does Paul have to do with you that's worth this risk?" Alexander asked in confusion, "Do you have a deal with him, or did you take his money?"
"Do you know why I didn't shoot that day?" Eric, in a rush, said, "He's my biological brother, understand?!"
Alexander was stunned upon hearing this.
"Alexander, listen to me," Eric, eyes red and panting, continued, "I don't know if my relationship with Paul will be discovered. But if it is, I'll be immediately monitored and subject to the principle of familial avoidance. By then, I won't have any chance at all. I've already thought it through. Tomorrow morning, after my shift, I won't go home. I'll pretend to be sleeping at the department, using surveillance to create the illusion that I was in the dorm the whole time. Then, when the police come for the handover, I'll act at the intersection if I can save him. If not, I'll try my best not to get caught. Paul came back from the anarchic district. No one knows if he has accomplices outside. So, as long as I'm not caught in the act, they might not know it was me. Understand?"
"When you're on a mission, you don't even dare to get close to the criminals. Can you really rescue someone from a convoy? You're oversimplifying it," Alexander said.
"I don't want to risk my life, but do I have a choice? If I don't help him, I have to watch him die," Eric added.
Alexander was stunned again.
"Stay out of this." Eric lowered his head and started to walk out of the stairwell.
At that moment, an electronic bell sounded in the hallway, followed by a shout from the monitoring room. "Someone check Room 3. Paul is acting strange."
Hearing this, Alexander and Eric froze.
In the first-floor lobby, William heard the announcement from the monitoring room, paused briefly, and then said, "Go check on Paul quickly!"
Footsteps echoed in the hallway as the officers on duty rushed out, heading toward the interrogation room.
At the door, four officers unlocked the iron door with a key and saw Paul frantically banging his left cheek against the iron plate in front of the chair.
"What are you doing? Stop messing around." The lead officer stepped in and tried to stop him.
Paul again slammed the left side of his face, near his mouth, against the iron plate. His face was already lacerated, and blood was pouring from his mouth and nose.
The lead officer grabbed Paul's hair and yanked it back. "Quick, hold him down."
Paul gave a deranged smile, lifted his head, and stared blankly at the officer. "Too late."
William, Kevin, and the others rushed to the door almost simultaneously with Alexander and Eric.
"What happened?" William asked, panting.
The officer turned and said, "He suddenly started banging his head against the iron plate. I... I don't know what he's doing."
Hearing this, Eric, with red eyes, started to rush into the room.
Alexander grabbed Eric's arm and shook his head solemnly.
William entered the room, approached Paul, and immediately ordered, "Open his mouth quickly."
Upon hearing this, the four officers held Paul's head and forcibly opened his bloodied mouth.
William, eyes wide with tension, didn't care if Paul bit his fingers. He reached into Paul's mouth and pulled out a fake tooth.
Paul gagged and spat out a lot of blood.
William looked at the fake tooth, his eyes dazed, and took two steps back.
The fake tooth was hollow in the middle, with black plastic stuck to the edges, looking very disgusting in William's hand.
"What is it?" Samuel rushed in and asked.
"A fake tooth. He... he knocked out his fake tooth," William stammered.
Samuel was stunned upon hearing this.
On the iron chair, Paul suddenly shook his head, breaking free from the officers' grip, his face still showing a deranged smile. "Since I started this job, I've known how I would die. There's a small pill in the fake tooth. It's poison. I crushed it."
William suddenly kicked Paul in the chest and shouted, "Quick, open the chair and get him to the hospital."
Paul laughed at William. "You guys are tough. We can't beat you even if we risk our lives. But William, I want to tell you something. Some things are seen by God. I don't believe that life-saving medicine should be in your hands. Even in death, I curse you. You and your men won't die a good death!"
Everyone fell silent upon hearing this.
Paul, expressionless, twisted his neck and looked towards the door, hoarsely shouting, "To the other guys in the interrogation rooms, don't be afraid. I didn't say anything. Keep your mouths shut, and you'll be fine."
Hearing this, Eric clenched his fists and started to walk out, knowing that Paul was speaking to him.
Alexander held Eric's arm and whispered, "Did you hear that? He wants to die now, so you don't take risks. Don't move, no matter what."
On the iron chair, Paul leaned forward and suddenly spat out a mouthful of blood, his body convulsing violently.
Seeing this, William gave up on sending him to the hospital. Holding the fake tooth, he bent down and whispered in Paul's ear, "You think you were discreet? You think dying will end it?"
Paul turned his head, expressionless.
"You had contact with someone from our department. They're right outside, aren't they?" William asked with a smile.
Paul, hearing this, vomited blood again, staring at William with resentment.
