Chapter 161 Blitzkrieg
In the wasteland, outside the deep pit, two frozen bodies lay on white sheets while John snapped photos with his camera.
Next to the vehicle, Alexander patted Cade on the back. "You okay?"
Tears streamed down Cade's face as he bent over, vomiting.
"Want some water?" Alexander asked again.
"No, no need." Cade waved him off, wiped his tears, and cursed, "These people are monsters."
Alexander turned on the voice recorder. "Can you confirm the deceased are Dominic and Lily?"
"Yes." Cade nodded.
"I'll hand the bodies over to a trusted medical examiner. We'll have preliminary results by tomorrow night." Alexander looked at Cade. "Now, tell me who buried them."
"His name is Knox Wells, a henchman of Zephyr," Cade said without hesitation. "He hangs out at the Barbie Club. I saw him take the bodies away that day."
"Got it."
"Whether a life is worth anything depends on you guys in uniform," Cade said, his voice deep with meaning.
"I'll handle this properly," Alexander replied quietly.
The next day, around 3 PM.
Alexander was catching up on sleep in his dorm when John burst in. "Wake up, the results are out."
After a few calls, Alexander groggily opened his eyes. "From the medical examiner?"
"Yeah." John handed him the report. "Take a look."
Alexander read the report for about ten minutes before looking up. "Have you been keeping an eye on Knox?"
"Yes, he hasn't noticed anything yet."
"Gather the team. I'll lead the action." Alexander set the report aside. "Did we get fingerprints from that half-broken bottle found in the pit?"
"It took some time, but the cold weather helped. Forensics says it shouldn't be a problem."
"Good." Alexander rubbed his face. "Gather the team. I'll grab a bite, and then we'll start."
"Got it." John nodded.
At 8:40 PM, outside a mid-range restaurant in Riverside District.
A young man with a buzz cut stood on the steps, shouting into his phone, "I'm drinking. Zephyr's coming too, right? Okay, I'll be there soon. See you."
Just as he hung up, Alexander stepped up. "Knox, right?"
"Yeah," the young man turned, his face flushed. "Who are you?"
Alexander suddenly kicked him, sending Knox flying off the steps and crashing onto the icy ground.
John rushed over, twisted Knox's arm behind his back, and pressed his knee against Knox's head. "Police, don't move."
"What's going on? What did I do?"
"I said don't move!" John kicked him twice. "Keep your head down."
Realizing the situation, Knox shouted towards the restaurant, "Ethan, Ethan, the police got me! Tell Zephyr to help!"
"Shut your mouth!" John kicked Knox in the face, causing blood to gush from his nose as he curled up in pain.
"Bring the car over," Alexander ordered.
A police car drove up and stopped beside the steps.
John and the others pulled Knox up and shoved him into the back seat.
A few seconds later, a burly young man rushed out, shouting, "Where is he? Who took my friend?"
"They took him," a waiter inside the door said, looking up.
"Did they say which department?" the burly young man asked.
"No idea." The waiter shook his head.
Around 11 PM.
After finishing his late-night snack in the cafeteria, Alexander went to the restroom to wash his face. Feeling fully awake, he knocked on the door of the interrogation room.
A few seconds later, John came out, shaking his head and cursing, "This guy's tough, playing dumb."
Alexander smiled, opened the door, and said, "You guys go eat. I'll handle this."
"Okay."
The team grabbed their cups and walked out.
In the iron chair, Knox tilted his head, looking at Alexander with disdain.
Alexander casually closed the door, walked over to the monitor, and yanked out the transmission cable. "Leaving this on all the time wastes electricity."
Knox stared at Alexander, momentarily stunned.
"Want a smoke?" Alexander took out an e-cigarette and asked.
Knox instinctively nodded.
Alexander took a puff, walked over leisurely, and slapped Knox on the head. "Who taught you to smoke?"
Knox was dumbfounded.
"Want a puff?" Alexander handed the e-cigarette over.
"I... I don't smoke." Knox shook his head.
Alexander slapped him hard, making Knox dizzy. "I offer you a smoke, and you don't take it? Do you look down on me?"
"What do you want?" Knox shouted, his face red and swollen.
"Did you bury Dominic and Lily?" Alexander squinted his eyes and asked.
Knox was stunned, looking slightly surprised and stammering, "Who? Who is Dominic... Who is Lily?"
"Do you want a smoke or not?" Alexander handed the e-cigarette over again.
Knox stretched his neck to look at him, full of questions.
Alexander, with all his strength, slapped Knox's face again. "Answer me!"
Knox's nose, which had just stopped bleeding, started gushing again. He shouted, "Are you messing with me? You better sentence me to death, or when I get out, you'll have a hard time."
"Want a puff?" Alexander asked again, looking down.
Knox, stunned, immediately leaned back.
Alexander smiled at him and said succinctly, "Do you think we'd come after you without any evidence? The bodies were in the wasteland about thirty-five miles north of Riverside District 306 Highway, right? When you drove the car into the wild, you were afraid the tires would slip on the snow in the ditch, so you placed two boards to pave the way, right?"
Knox turned pale upon hearing this, staring at Alexander in shock, his eyes showing a hint of panic.
In the city, at a drinking party, Zephyr, already drunk, held his phone and shouted in the hallway, "What did you say?"
"Zephyr, Knox was suddenly arrested."
"Why was he arrested?" Zephyr asked groggily.
"I'm confused, too." The person on the phone responded in a low voice, "Knox hasn't caused any trouble recently. Why would the police suddenly arrest him?"
"Fuck, then you go and ask around."
"Zephyr, do you think it could be about that incident at the Barbie Club?" The person on the phone hesitated for a moment before reminding, "Knox only handled that one thing recently."
Zephyr was stunned. "Impossible, I settled that matter long ago. The chief of Riverside District Police is a good friend of my dad's. I asked him before, and he said the police had already closed the case. That waiter and his wife are still listed as missing."
"I think it's better to be cautious about this. Otherwise..."
"Fuck, this case is in Riverside District. What do I have to worry about?" Zephyr replied, hiccuping, "Knox must have caused some other trouble. You find out what happened, and I'll handle it tomorrow morning. Alright, that's it."
