Chapter 172 The Night of the Squatting

Joe hugged himself, glanced at the distant buildings, and called out to his buddy, "Let's head back."

Inside the police station.

Jasper walked into Team Three's office area, staring straight at Alexander.

"What's the deal, Captain Lane?" Alexander asked, sounding bored.

"I told you to check out leads on Maple Street. What were you doing at Adam's house?" Jasper's eyes were gloomy. "What are you up to?"

"I went to Adam's to get the basics," Alexander said, shrugging. "We don't even know the cause of the case yet. What am I supposed to find on Maple Street? That guy Duke is key because Zephyr went there to save him. So, is it wrong for me to ask the Wilde family about him?"

"You don't need to worry about the plan. I made the plan; you just follow it, got it?" Jasper pointed at Alexander's face, scolding him.

Alexander squinted, raised his hand, and pushed Jasper's arm away. "Captain Lane, don't talk to me like that. I have the authority to decide how to investigate too."

Jasper leaned in and whispered, "As long as you're in Team Four under Director Sharp, don't get too cocky. I might not be able to hurt you, but what about your team? Thought about that?"

Alexander was stunned.

Jasper straightened up, pointed at John and the others, and barked, "Tonight, you take the two new guys to Maple Street. Change shifts early tomorrow."

"Duty for what?"

"There's a tip someone's selling guns at 46-8 Maple Street. Keep an eye on it," Jasper said coldly. "Don't leave your post. If you do, it's considered abandoning your duty."

John gritted his teeth and replied, "Yes, Captain Lane, I'll go now."

"It's cold out. Wear more." Jasper smirked and walked away.

As soon as Jasper left, John slammed the case file on the table and cursed, "Jasper's always pulling this crap, making us miserable over nothing."

"If Jasper hadn't come to vent his anger, Zephyr might've been killed maliciously," Alexander frowned. "But today we went to Adam's, and he picked a fight. This means Zephyr's murder isn't simple."

"Yeah, Zephyr was killed because of the gun trafficking," Xavier nodded. "And the fact that this case fell on Jasper must've been William's doing. Today you went to see Adam, and they thought you were targeting him, so Jasper blew up."

"Fuck," John cursed, "He wants us to stake out Maple Street all night. This is a joke. I'm not going. If he wants to report me tomorrow, let him."

Xavier advised, "Forget it. If you don't go, he might report you for dereliction of duty and defying leadership tomorrow."

"Yeah, my bad for mouthing off earlier. Let's give him some respect." Alexander smiled. "You go home tonight; I'll take the duty."

"Don't be ridiculous. What are you gonna do on duty?" John waved his hand dismissively.

"It's fine, I've been resting well lately." Alexander stood up. "I'll take the two rookies."

After going through several incidents with Alexander, John had become very firm in his stance, and there was no more pretense between them. So, when he heard this, he didn't hesitate. "Alright, you take tonight, and I'll take over tomorrow. You don't need to come."

"Deal." Alexander agreed readily.

Around 8 PM.

Alexander, wearing a military coat, sat in the parked car, hugging himself. "Elbert, when you come back, if you two get sleepy, go ahead and sleep. I'll take the late-night watch."

"I'm not sleepy; I'm too excited to sleep," Loren responded naively. "First time on duty, I'm pumped."

"Alright then, the job tonight is all yours. I'll cuddle with Elbert to sleep."

"Gross."

Alexander grinned, took out an e-cigarette, and said, "Loren, with your personality, you'll be popular in the team."

Just then, the car door opened, and Elbert, carrying a bunch of food, sat in the passenger seat.

"What did you do?" Alexander asked.

"I went to the bathroom and bought some snacks." Elbert quickly opened the bag and took out a piece of fried chicken wrapped in oil paper. "Here, Captain James, have this..."

Alexander was taken aback. "You're quite generous. Did your family give you a lot of pocket money when you came to Pine City for work?"

"He doesn't have any pocket money." Loren rolled his eyes. "He borrowed it from me just now."

"Shut up. What if I don't pay you back?" Elbert scolded Loren and handed a can of expensive beer to Alexander. "Captain James, have this."

Alexander looked at Elbert's expression, paused for a moment, and said, "Elbert, you don't need to spend money to get along with me. Let's be casual with each other. That way, you won't be tired, and I'll be comfortable."

Elbert was taken aback. "It's fine. I just got here, and there's this opportunity, so I'll treat you seriously."

"Alright, let's eat together." Alexander nodded.

With that, the three of them started eating their midnight snacks in the car.

Around 11 PM.

In the dispatch room of the Black Street District police station, the phone suddenly rang.

"Hello, Black Street District police station dispatch room."

"Hello, I want to report something."

"Report what?"

"The murderer from the Riverside District landfill is living in the Pine Street Welfare District, Unit 2, Room 606," the person on the phone said briefly. "I'm not joking, this is real. The main suspect is in that room right now, but if you go late, you might miss him."
