Chapter 38 Destiny
In the wilderness.
Andrew pushed open the car door and jumped out. Turning to the car, he saw that the right rear wheel was deeply stuck in the snow.
"Why does something always go wrong when you're in a hurry?" Andrew cursed, immediately grabbed a flashlight from the car, and bent down to inspect the right rear wheel. He saw that the tire was stuck in a dirt ridge, completely unable to touch the solid ground.
Andrew cursed, immediately grabbed a flashlight from the car, and bent down to inspect the right rear wheel. He saw that the tire was stuck in a dirt ridge, completely unable to touch the solid ground.
Lying on the ground for a closer look, Andrew got up and ran to the trunk. He grabbed the iron chain with his bare hands and pulled it twice before he could free the spare tire. However, due to the cold weather and the snow on the car, the spare tire was completely frozen to the trunk. So Andrew had no choice but to press his whole body against the spare tire, shaking it vigorously.
A grating sound emerged, and Andrew turned flushed from the effort. After many shakes, the spare tire finally fell with a clunk. The triangular hook connecting the hub and the iron chain instantly cut a gash in Andrew's thigh, causing blood to gush out onto the snow.
Andrew touched the cut on his thigh but endured the pain, not daring to delay for a moment. He pushed the spare tire under the right rear wheel with both hands and then returned to the car.
"God, let me go," Andrew muttered anxiously as he shifted gears and lightly pressed the gas pedal, letting the tire rest on the spare tire.
"Go!" Andrew suddenly floored the gas pedal, shouting.
The engine roared, and the car wobbled forward before finally driving out of the snow.
Andrew turned the steering wheel to the left, accelerated again, and the car shot forward.
At the edge of the city, Eric stopped, panting, and immediately dialed Andrew's number.
"Hello, are you there yet?" Eric asked.
"The car got stuck in the snow. I just got it out and am heading to the city now," Andrew responded, swearing.
Eric was stunned and urgently urged, "Hurry up, get to the North Station as fast as you can."
"I know." Andrew replied.
"I'm heading there, too. Call me if anything comes up," Eric added.
"Okay."
With that, they ended the call, and Eric continued to rush to the North Station as fast as he could.
Twenty minutes later.
The car stopped on the road in front of the North Station. Andrew, bleeding from his leg and staggering, rushed out, holding his car keys and searching the square.
"Sophia, Sophia...!" After searching for two minutes without seeing Sophia, Andrew started shouting in the square.
At the entrance to the underground passage, an old lady shakily walked up the steps and shouted in Andrew's direction, "Andrew, over here."
Hearing the voice, Andrew turned around and, upon seeing Eric's mother, was overjoyed. He rushed over. "Auntie, are you okay? Where's Sophia?"
"She's waiting for you. Didn't you see her?" The old lady, with poor eyesight and hearing, responded.
Andrew was puzzled. "I didn't see her!"
"I can't walk, so she told me to wait below." The old lady said anxiously, "You need to find her quickly."
"Okay.Don't worry, I'll find her." Andrew turned and ran back. In less than five minutes, he had searched the entire square but still hadn't seen Sophia.
At a small food stall in the front left of the square, Andrew rushed over and asked urgently, "Brother, if you saw a little girl standing here waiting? About 13 years old."
The stall owner, hiding in the booth, looked up at Andrew and said, "I saw her. Two cars came and took her away."
Andrew was dumbfounded upon hearing this. "When did this happen?"
"About five minutes ago," the owner replied.
"Did you hear what they said?" Andrew asked.
"No, four people got out and took her away directly," the owner added.
"Why didn't you try to stop them?" Andrew was anxious.
The stall owner rolled his eyes. "How would I know what they were doing? Why should I stop them? Does it have anything to do with me? Get out of here and don't waste my time."
Andrew widened his eyes, feeling a chill in his heart.
In the city.
Just as Eric was about to forcibly stop a car, he suddenly heard his phone ring in his pocket.
"Hello?" Eric stopped and answered the call, panting.
There was a brief silence before a familiar voice came through, "Didn't expect so much to happen at the police department while I was away. If I'd known, I wouldn't have left and would have gone back with you."
Eric instantly recognized George's voice.
"Trying to run?" George sneered, "Do you think you can get away? Come to Maple Street. I'm waiting for you with your sister."
Eric was stunned.
"If you don't bring the stuff within two hours, I might have to do something inhumane," George said lightly, "That's it."
In the office of the police department.
William, holding a phone, said, "The main goal is to get the supplier's contact information. Don't let George go too far."
"I just don't get it. The guy is from the police department. How could you let him get away? This stuff has been held up for so long. Do we still have no result?" The middle-aged man's voice on the phone sounded impatient. "There's a lot of inventory. If we don't eliminate the competition, I can't confidently move forward!"
"I don't run the police department. There's a sharp Samuel above us. We've tried to win him over several times, but he always plays dumb. I can't be too blatant about the drug dealing, or he'll cause trouble." William frowned in response.
"Find an opportunity to deal with that short-sighted Samuel," the middle-aged man demanded.
"You say that every day!" William snapped. "He's the top leader of the police department. Without absolute conflict of interest, why would you deal with him? Are you crazy?"
"Don't worry about that small officer. I'll let George handle it. You just go and get the clues later." The other party was silent for a few seconds before hanging up.
On the dark road, Eric, with red eyes, dialed Andrew's phone.
"I'm here, but I didn't find Sophia. The guy at the food stall said two cars..." Andrew began to explain urgently.
"She was taken," Eric interrupted coldly.
Andrew was stunned.
"I need you to do me a favor," Eric said.
"What favor?" Andrew asked immediately.
"I need to get the lowdown on William. Can you dig up something for me?" Eric said clearly, head lowered.
After listening, Andrew asked wide-eyed, "What are you doing? Why do you want to investigate him?"
"There's a cliff ahead and countless people pushing me from behind. I've accepted it. I'm going to jump and see if I survive," Eric said, clenching his fists. "If you consider me a friend, help me one last time."
"Calm down. If it doesn't work out..." Andrew added.
"Andrew, are you telling me to calm down? Over the past few years, who has been calmer than me? If there was even a slight chance to escape, would I jump off a cliff?" Eric shouted with red eyes, "If you don't help me, I'll go back to the police department and find William right now."
Late at night, around 11 PM.
In a standalone building at Elm Street in the Black Street District, a chubby man and two friends were sitting in the second-floor hall, eating.
Downstairs, a figure pushed open the glass door, covered in frost and snow.
