Chapter 59 Head to Lincoln District
Eric's residence was about 1,120 miles from River State. In the past, this journey might have taken just over twenty hours by car. But now, with the harsh environment and the devastation across various regions, the landscape had changed beyond recognition. After leaving the north, Eric found himself in the vast Gobi Desert of the central region and saw the dried-up remains of a once-great river that had nurtured countless lives.
The current living conditions in this area were roughly divided into three levels.
The third level was the no-man's land, where the disaster severity was extreme. Some areas had dried, cracked land with no water sources for hundreds of miles. Others were frozen wastelands for hundreds of miles. And some had turned into vast oceans. Before the disaster, the government had used a lot of technological engineering to fight the disaster and save people, but most of these efforts ultimately failed against nature. These failed projects left behind hidden dangers, such as nuclear radiation and areas with high levels of chemical contaminants. These regions had now become places no one dared to enter. It might take decades for these areas to recover.
The second level was the pending planned area, where the environment was harsh but still somewhat livable for the locals. However, due to limited geographical conditions and the current limited resources of the nine major districts, these areas could not yet become official living zones with the protection of the federal government, stable social environments, and relatively comfortable living conditions.
The first level consisted of the living zones established by the federal government, divided into nine districts.
River State was a pending planned area near the seventh district, with a relatively better geographical environment compared to the north. It included several populous urban areas, such as the Lincoln District mentioned by Alex. The entire River State was also referred to as the "Quasi-tenth District." A few years ago, the federal government seriously considered building a new city here, but due to limited resources, the difficulty of managing a large population, and the complex "civilian forces", the plan was ultimately abandoned.
After nearly three days of rapid travel, Alexander, Eric, and Andrew finally arrived at the Lincoln District. The journey was fraught with hardships, and Andrew later admitted that if it weren't for Alexander's experience and knowledge of the area, he and Eric might not have survived the trip. Some challenges could not be overcome by sheer determination alone.
Despite the difficulties, they reached their destination.
After entering the Lincoln District, the three had a quick hot meal and a few hours of rest before heading to the Velvet Sky Club as soon as night fell.
Entertainment venues in this era were far less grand and luxurious than the clubs, nightclubs, and KTVs of the past. When people could barely feed themselves, there was little time for leisure.
The Velvet Sky Club had only three floors, about twenty private rooms, a dozen guest rooms, and a small bar-like relaxation area. Nowadays, most people who came to such places were not here purely for fun. They were mostly here for business meetings. Due to the scarcity of resources, the cost of consumption was naturally very high.
Following Alex's instructions, Eric booked a private room on the second floor, and a waiter soon brought in a dozen attractive women.
"Is that all?" the waiter asked politely.
"Yes." Eric nodded.
"Then please choose some girls." The waiter grinned. "We have all types here, and they are all very talented."
Alexander and the others were here for serious business and weren't interested in such distractions, so they politely declined. "We'll choose later. We're still waiting for some guests."
Just as the waiter was about to nod and respond, a girl standing on the far left stepped forward with a smile and said, "Sir, why don't you just pick three? We all have tasks to do. If we don't get any business for a day, not only do we not earn money, but we also get fined."
Andrew looked at the girl and scrutinized her. Seeing her bright eyes, graceful figure, and natural charm, he grinned and asked, "With your looks, can't you get any business?"
As Andrew engaged with her, the girl quickly stepped forward and said, "We have all kinds of women here, and the competition is fierce. If I don't work hard, I can't make money."
Andrew turned to Alexander and whispered in his ear, "In a place like this, it's not good to not choose any women. Why not let a few sit down, and we can send them away when the main guest arrives? After all, you'll probably need to treat him well."
On second thought, Alexander felt Andrew made a good point and nodded. "Alright, let's keep three."
"What's your name?" Andrew asked the girl.
"Coco."
"Ask two of your friends to sit down," Andrew said casually.
Coco was momentarily stunned.
"What, no friends here?" Andrew teased.
"I do." Coco snapped out of her daze and pointed to two girls on the left. "You two, sit down."
The two girls walked over and sat next to Eric and Alexander.
The waiter bowed politely to everyone and said, "Enjoy yourselves, gentlemen."
After some pleasantries, the others left.
Andrew felt bored and looked at Coco's long legs. He couldn't help but touch them, saying, "You have such nice skin."
"You certainly have a way with words.," Coco replied.
"I'm just being honest."
Hearing this, Eric felt a headache coming on and leaned closer to Alexander. "He's not nervous at all."
Coco crossed her legs and gently removed Andrew's hand from her leg. "You have nice hands."
Downstairs.
A middle-aged man with a crew cut walked into the lobby alone.
The waiter immediately ran over. "Sir, are you alone or with friends? Do you have a reservation?"
"My surname is Young, and I reserved a suite on the third floor for a meeting." the man with the crew cut said, glancing around.
"Alright, please follow me," the waiter said, stepping aside and smiling as he led the way.
