Chapter 213 Special Agent Andrew Investigates

After Adam and his crew bailed from Pine City, the manhunt was still on.

Running a gun trafficking ring wasn’t just about having some cash and gutsy helpers. From getting the guns to selling them, you needed some official backing. To sell locally, you needed the cops to look the other way; to move guns out of the area, you gotta bribe checkpoint staff. So when Adam got nabbed, a bunch of low-level cops and military guys got busted too.

After Andrew reported the case, internal investigations in the military and police ramped up. Within days, dozens were arrested. The gun trade in Pine City went quiet, with all the traffickers laying low.

More than ten days flew by. Andrew was swamped, chasing leads on Adam's group and coordinating with law enforcement.

One afternoon.

After a quick bite in the cafeteria, Andrew grabbed some files and headed to Samuel's office. But Samuel wasn't there again.

"He's not here again?" Andrew asked Virgil, frustrated. "Where is he?"

"Out on business," Virgil replied, looking up. "What's up?"

In the past ten days, Andrew had visited Samuel's office at least twenty times but had only caught him three times, and their chats were always brief.

Andrew, a bit annoyed, asked, "What's Samuel been up to lately? Why can't I ever find him?"

"Should Samuel check in with you before he does anything?" Virgil teased.

"Do you enjoy messing with me every day?" Andrew put the files on the table and sat across from Virgil. "I'm just curious. We almost cracked the Adam case, and it's time to report to the police department, but Samuel's never around. What's he busy with?"

Virgil sipped his tea and calmly said, "Some leaders from Stardust City are here, and Samuel's been with them. If you need anything, just tell me."

"He's not even busy with the right stuff," Andrew grumbled, then pushed the files over. "The police inspectors want to temporarily hold a few people we have in custody. I can't decide this. Should we cooperate?"

"Why do they want to hold them?" Virgil frowned.

"They've arrested some mid-level officers from the Riverside District police, but the evidence might be shaky. So they need our help."

Virgil thought for a moment, then nodded. "Alright, send them over."

"Got it." Andrew nodded.

In the afternoon.

Just as Andrew arrived at the third prison to pick up the detainees with Virgil's approved documents, his phone rang.

"Hello?"

"Is this Sheriff Andrew Michael?" the caller asked.

Andrew was surprised. "Who... who is this?"

"This is the police department office. Deputy Director Campbell wants you to come to the department immediately."

"Me?"

"Yes, it's urgent," the caller insisted.

"Can't it wait a bit?"

"Deputy Director Campbell wants you to come right away," the caller's tone was firm.

"Alright, I'll be there soon."

"Okay, that's it."

Andrew hung up, puzzled. "What does Jacob Campbell want with me?"

"You heading to the police department?" John asked.

"Yeah," Andrew said, unbuckling his seatbelt. "You guys go pick up the detainees. I'll head to the department."

"Got it." John nodded.

An hour later.

Andrew drove to the police department, went straight to the third floor, and entered the office.

"Are you Andrew?" A middle-aged man stood up and extended his hand.

"Yep, that's me." Andrew nodded.

"Come on, I'll take you to Deputy Director Campbell," the man said with a smile.

Andrew followed, still puzzled. "What does Deputy Director Campbell want with me?"

"You'll find out soon," the man replied softly. "He's in the small conference room."

"Okay." Andrew nodded.

They chatted as they walked and soon arrived at the small conference room on the fifth floor. Inside, Andrew saw six or seven high-ranking officials, including the chief, captains, and deputy captains.

"Andrew, right? Find a seat," Jacob, the bald deputy director, greeted with a smile.

"Sure thing." Andrew nodded and sat in the middle of the table.

"Andrew," Jacob smiled warmly. "I've got good news for you."

Andrew was taken aback and awkwardly smiled. "What good news, Deputy Director Campbell?"

"We have a lead on Adam," Jacob said with a smile.

"A lead on him?" Andrew was shocked. "Where?"

"Longridge," a police captain on the left replied softly.

In a government office building in Riverside District.

Samuel, looking grim, asked on the phone, "Is the information confirmed?"

"Yes, Andrew has already gone to the police department," Virgil nodded. "It seems the task of capturing Adam has been given to him."

"When did you find out? Why didn't you tell me earlier?" Samuel asked, annoyed.

"I just found out," Virgil replied helplessly. "And the information only reached the department recently."

"Damn it, what's Jacob thinking? If they have a lead on Adam, they should just send the major crimes unit. Why call Andrew?" Samuel complained.

"I heard from people at the department that Jacob thinks the Adam case was mainly cracked by our Black Street District police, and Andrew is the task force leader, so it's only right for him to handle it," Virgil explained softly. "I also found out that Riley strongly recommended Andrew to Jacob."

Samuel's face darkened. "Damn it, going to Longridge to capture someone is not a good job. I'll call the department and have them change the person."

"Samuel, I think you shouldn't make that call," Virgil advised immediately. "Everyone knows you have a special relationship with Andrew, so if you speak up, it won't look good, and Jacob might not agree."

"That damn Riley, causing trouble again after a few quiet days," Samuel cursed irritably.

"You should listen to me and not argue with the department about this. The decision has probably already been made," Virgil advised again.

Samuel pondered for a moment. "Alright, I'll make a call."

"Okay."

After ending the call, Samuel thought for a moment and dialed another number.

In the hospital, Alexander's phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID and answered, "Hello? Samuel."
