Chapter 195 How Did Jasper Die?

Late at night.

Police Chief Peter Flores and Deputy Chief Nathan Evans pulled up to the Pine City Police Department in the same car.

Ten minutes later.

Samuel got a call from Peter. Standing by his apartment's floor-to-ceiling window, he said, "Yeah, okay. I'll be right there."

After hanging up, Samuel frowned at his phone for a moment and then called Riley.

Riley, sweating in his lover's house, waved at the young woman beside him. "You go outside, I need to take this call."

The woman grabbed a robe, put it on, and left the bedroom barefoot.

"Hello, Samuel?" Riley answered, sounding weak.

"Riley, where are you?"

"I'm...at home."

"Jasper told you about the raid in the Welfare District, right?" Samuel asked directly.

Riley paused, puzzled. "Raid in the Welfare District? When did this happen, and who are they arresting?"

"You don't know?"

"No." Riley shook his head. "I've been feeling unwell, running a fever of 104 degrees. Came home early and have been out of it."

"Jasper led a team to the Welfare District to arrest the suspects who killed Zephyr."

"Really?" Riley asked immediately. "Did they catch them?"

"No, Jasper was killed by the criminals. We have 2 officers dead, 5 seriously injured, and seven or eight lightly injured," Samuel said in a low voice.

Riley flicked his sparse bangs and exploded in anger. "That damn Jasper! Who authorized him to conduct the raid? Why wasn't I informed? Why didn't he notify the Special Cases Unit for support? What was he thinking?"

Samuel squinted and stayed silent for a moment before calmly replying, "Director Flores wants me to go to the station. Are you coming?"

"Yeah. I'll get dressed right away." Riley blinked his shrewd little eyes but didn't move from the bed.

"Forget it, you're not feeling well. If you can't go, then don't," Samuel replied softly. "I'll report to the leadership."

"Alright, I'll call Director Flores later," Riley said steadily. "Samuel, I just got here and I'm not familiar with the situation at the precinct. I made a mistake by using this reckless Jasper."

Samuel smiled coldly. "Okay, you rest first. I'm heading to the station now."

"Okay."

After ending the call, Samuel walked outside, while Riley sat on the bed and immediately called his contacts at the station, speaking non-stop. "Yes, yes, I just got to the precinct and am not clear on personnel issues. I've been cooperating with Samuel on work. Yes, the Zephyr case has put a lot of pressure on me, and the team is very anxious. Jasper was also eager to solve the case and give the public an explanation..."

Forty minutes later.

In a small conference room at the police station, Peter crossed his arms and looked at Samuel, expressionless. "The case has reached this point. As the main leader of the Black Street District, do you have anything to say?"

"If something goes wrong, the responsibility is definitely mine," Samuel replied with a slight frown. "I won't argue about that and will actively handle the aftermath."

"Samuel, I want to know why the station wasn't informed about such a large-scale raid in advance?" Nathan, a blonde with a deadpan expression, asked.

"Not just you, I didn't know either," Samuel responded immediately. "When Riley first came to the precinct, he proposed to oversee three major criminal investigation teams at the first meeting. I agreed because he was directly assigned by the station to handle criminal cases as the deputy chief. Jasper's team was under his supervision. Meeting records and internal decisions at the precinct can all be traced."

Peter frowned upon hearing this.

"I'm not dodging responsibility. I said it before. Since the raid went wrong, as the highest-ranking officer in the Black Street District, I must bear the responsibility. But I was genuinely unaware of this raid," Samuel explained softly. "So I think the report on this case should be written by Riley himself."

Peter slowly stood up and replied forcefully, "The report is just to appease the higher-ups. What use is it to me? The suspects escaped, and we suffered heavy casualties. I want a solution, the dignity of the police system!"

Samuel remained silent.

Peter turned around, pointed at Samuel, and said, "Tell me personally, how long will it take to solve the case and restore our dignity? Say it right here."

"If the case isn't solved within a month, I'll resign," Samuel responded expressionlessly.

"Samuel, you said it yourself."

"Yes, I said it."

"Alright, then I won't say anything else," Peter said decisively. "You can go now. We'll see the results in a month."

"What about the report? Should I have Riley send it to you tomorrow?" Samuel asked slyly.

Peter's face turned dark as he replied, "Tell Riley to do three things: first, keep his mouth shut about this case; second, fully cooperate with the police inspector to explain Jasper's death; third, don't contact me for a while."

"Okay, Director Flores, I'll convey it to Riley tactfully." Samuel immediately nodded.

The next morning, at the police station's affiliated hospital.

Samuel closed the hospital room door, hands behind his back, and asked Alexander with a grim expression, "How did Jasper die?"

"He was killed by the criminals," Alexander replied from the hospital bed, his leg in a cast.

"Don't give me that. What are you guys really up to?" Samuel asked angrily.

"I'm not lying."

"Do you think I'm an idiot, or that Jasper was an idiot?" Samuel glared. "Elbert already called out on the radio that there were criminals in the hallway. Why did Jasper go back alone? Is he out of his mind?"

Alexander blinked and replied, "Maybe he was worried about my safety and rushed to save me."

"Bullshit! Anyone can see he couldn't wait for you to get hit by a car," Samuel cursed.

Alexander remained silent.

"What really happened?"

"I was unconscious at the time," Alexander replied awkwardly.

"Unconscious, huh?" Samuel pointed at Alexander. "Are you sure you were unconscious? Then I won't bother with this."

Alexander pondered for a moment, recalling Elbert's reaction, and nodded. "Yes, I'm sure. I was unconscious."

Samuel was taken aback. "Unconscious, huh? That makes things easier for me."

"Samuel, I suspect there might be a mole in our precinct," Alexander said after thinking for a while.

"What did you say?"

"Actually, Jasper's deployment yesterday wasn't a problem, and the raid was kept very confidential, but the criminals still reacted in advance at the critical moment," Alexander explained in a low voice. "I feel like someone in the precinct is tipping them off."

Samuel sat down next to Alexander and immediately asked, "Do you have any clues?"

In an underground clinic in the Riverside District, Joe and his group, who had caused such a big mess in the Welfare District, didn't flee the area immediately. Instead, they were met by someone who took them to a doctor to treat their injuries.

In the hallway of the clinic, Joe smoked a cigarette and typed a message with one hand.

Joe: [I lost a friend. This is no longer just about cooperation and money. I need Adam and William to understand who I really am.]
