Chapter 45 The Clash of the Big Shots Behind the Scenes
On Maple Street, the Anderson family and the Patrick family had already lined up, with nearly a thousand people facing off. The weapons gleamed coldly, instantly making the atmosphere incredibly tense.
In the center of the crowd, William tilted his head and asked Benjamin, "I'll ask you one last time, are you going to move or not?"
"You've blocked the road, how am I supposed to move?" Benjamin remained calm throughout, slowly turning to the people behind him and asking, "Without the drug supply, how will you survive?"
"Just starve to death," the burly leader shouted back.
"What about the Patrick family's drugs? Can you afford them?" Benjamin shouted to the poor residents on the street.
"No, we can't."
"So what do we do, wait to die?"
"If we run out of medicine, then no one should expect to live comfortably."
"Let's fight them!"
Hundreds of people immediately erupted in unison, and the Anderson family members started pressing forward with their weapons.
"Handle it," William said, his face dark as he looked at the opposing crowd. He turned to David and the others before turning to leave, "No matter how big the issue, the company will handle it."
With that, the Patrick family's people waiting by the roadside opened their trunks and started pulling out weapons. From their attire, it was clear they had stable incomes.
"Clear everyone at the entrance," David shouted.
Over a hundred people rushed towards the storefront where Eric was hiding.
At that moment, a gunshot rang out.
Everyone fell silent.
Alexander, holding a gun, shouted, "William, things aren't over yet, why are you leaving?"
William, who had already walked away, turned back at the sound.
Alexander stepped forward, holstered his gun, and said to Benjamin, "Hold on, let me talk a bit more. Maybe there's a way to solve it."
"Alexander, can't you see what's going on?" William pointed at Alexander's chest, shouting, "Do you know how much profit the drugs from just the Black Street District generate each month? Do you think you can handle this?"
Just then, William's phone rang.
"Go ahead, take it," Alexander said with a smile.
After a brief hesitation, William took out his phone and stared at Alexander as he answered, "Hello?"
"I have your goods and people from the warehouse," an unfamiliar male voice said.
William froze on the spot.
"Talk it out, and call me when you're done," the stranger said before hanging up.
William stood there, phone in hand, his expression shifting as he looked at Alexander, quickly formulating a plan.
Alexander took out an e-cigarette, tapped it twice, and said softly, "William, I'll say it again; let Eric go."
"Did you and the Anderson family team up to rob my warehouse?" William clenched his fist, with his voice low.
Alexander smiled but didn't respond directly.
"No, that's not it." William stared intently at Alexander, continuing, "You wouldn't dare do this without someone backing you. Do you have someone behind you?"
Alexander remained silent.
"Samuel?" William thought for a moment, then pointed at Alexander's chest and asked, "Is it him?"
"As long as you don't touch Eric, nothing will happen to your goods and people."
"I've given you a way out, why are you siding with Samuel?" William glared and asked, "Do you think he's that powerful? Let me tell you, he doesn't have as many people in the police department as I do. In the department, I call him Chief, but outside, do you know what I call him?"
"I know you have someone backing you." Alexander nodded.
"It's not easy coming from outside; Pine City is complicated. One wrong step, and you're done for."
"Yeah, I get it," Alexander squinted and said. "If I hadn't thought a bit more and talked things over with Benjamin, I might have been taken out on some street because the drug trade was cut off."
William was speechless.
"Let's be direct. You've promoted me, and I've done things for you. The past is the past. Today, it's about Eric," Alexander said seriously. "I'm asking you, can you help let him go today?"
"No way."
"No way? Well, then!" Alexander's gaze turned cold as he stared at William and shouted, "Go ahead, take Eric now. I won't stop you. But six hours later, if you kill him, I'll take the evidence of your drug trafficking and the testimonies of those captured and shut down the Patrick family's operation. You know how much your goods and people are worth."
"Try it!" William raised his hand to slap Alexander.
Alexander suddenly reached out, gripping William's neck like a steel clamp, and said fiercely, "I'm not Eric; I won't be bullied without fighting back. I tolerated you before, but not anymore!"
With that, Alexander slapped William hard.
David, stunned, pulled out his gun to aim at Alexander's head.
Alexander turned to David and shouted, "Be a good dog, this isn’t your place to speak."
At Alexander's shout, three men behind Benjamin pulled out their guns.
In the police department office, Samuel, after taking a call, stood by the window and dialed Terry's number.
"Samuel, long time no see!" Terry's cheerful voice came through the phone.
"Release Eric on Maple Street." Samuel got straight to the point.
Terry paused and responded, "I can't do that. You know, while I'm supplying the drugs, I'm not the only one profiting. Eric has supply channels, and Benjamin is protecting him to compete with me. How can I let him go?"
"I don't care about the profits," Samuel said, frowning. "Tonight, I just want Eric to be safe."
Terry took a deep breath and replied, "It's not easy; I can't do it."
"Your goods and people are with Benjamin." Samuel revealed. "If any of those kids on Maple Street get hurt tonight, think about your losses. If the goods are gone and the people spill information, you'll be in trouble."
Terry was stunned.
Seconds later, William answered Terry's call, "Hello? What do you want to say?"
After a long silence, Terry replied through gritted teeth, "Samuel is involved. Withdraw for now."
