Chapter 169 Happily Ever After Jasper
The next morning.
Jasper sat in the living room, munching on breakfast. "I won't be back tonight. Got some social stuff," he told his wife.
"Where are you off to now?" she snapped, glaring at him.
"It's just a social event," Jasper said, sipping his porridge. "William called. I can't just blow him off."
"William's not even at the precinct anymore. Why do you still care?"
"Even though he's gone, we're still bonded. Plus, since he took over the company, he's been good to me. Better than Terry ever was." Jasper grinned, pulling out a black leather bag and laying $8,000 on the table. "See? Not bad, right?"
His wife stared at it andthen snatched the money. "Only $8,000?"
"Yeah, just $8,000," Jasper said, a bit deflated.
"Are you hiding more?"
"No, really."
"Let me check."
"Can you give me some respect?" Jasper shot back.
"No way!" She roughly searched him.
Two minutes later, she found another $2,000 in his shirt pocket. "Jasper, hiding money now?"
"I need it for socializing!"
"What kind of socializing needs $2,000?"
"Riley just got promoted to deputy chief. He formed a new team, and I need this to get along," Jasper pleaded. "Don't take it, please."
"Socializing is fine, but I'll give it to you when you need it. And you have to account for it." She pocketed the money. "Now, go to work."
"Can't I get some human rights?" Jasper yelled.
She ignored him and went to the kitchen.
Jasper sighed, finished his porridge, changed clothes, and went to his daughter's room.
"Morning, Dad," his ten-year-old daughter, dressed like a princess, greeted him sweetly.
Jasper bent down, kissed her forehead, and smiled. "It's your day off. What will you do this afternoon?"
"Mom's taking me to Grandma's."
"Good. You should visit Grandma. She misses you." Jasper patted her head. "I got you a gift. It's in my bookshelf."
"Really?"
"Go get it, but don't let Mom see."
"Thanks, Dad." She hugged him, kissed his cheek, and ran off.
The morning sunlight poured into their cozy home. Jasper put on his coat and left, feeling energized.
7:30 PM, Neon Club.
"Get a girl for Captain Lane," Enrique joked to the waiter.
"No, no need," Jasper waved, smiling. "Let's talk about business first."
"Really?"
"Yeah. The girls here have a fragrance, and I gotta go home tonight," Jasper said slyly.
"You could win an award for being a good husband," William said, coming out of the bathroom, drying his hands. "Riverside District should've sent out a cooperation notice today, right?"
"They did," Jasper nodded.
"The guy who killed Zephyr doesn't have a photo, just a sketch," William said, lounging on the sofa with a glass of water. "Captain Lane, you and your team need to dig into this. If you catch these criminals, I'll owe you a favor."
Jasper grinned. "I actually have a photo of the guy who killed Zephyr."
"You do?" William looked shocked.
Jasper opened his bag, pulled out a photo of Joe, and laid it on the table. "Look. Isn't this the guy from the sketch?"
William picked up the photo and studied it. "You know, he really does look like him!"
"It's not just a resemblance; it's him," Jasper said quietly. "I've been working on a gun trafficking case. Caught a few small-time sellers, and one of them gave me surveillance footage. This photo is a screenshot."
"Now that you mention it, it does match up," William said, putting down the photo. "I also heard the people who killed Zephyr are into gun trafficking."
"Yeah," Jasper nodded. "When the cooperation notice from Riverside District came today, I recognized this guy right away."
"That's great," William said, getting excited. "You've been on this case before, so you know more than Riverside District. Dig deep and see if you can find any leads."
"Zephyr was killed in Riverside District," Jasper said softly. "Shouldn't they lead the case?"
"Adam has a lot of pull in Riverside District. He'll probably use his city connections," William explained in a low voice. "So, the Black Street District precinct will definitely get a strict cooperation notice from the police department."
"Got it," Jasper nodded.
"Captain Lane, keep an eye on this," William said, patting Jasper's leg. "If we can avenge Zephyr, Adam will definitely reward you."
"I understand," Jasper nodded again.
"By the way, we got so caught up in business that I forgot to give you something," William smiled and called out, "Bring over the two cartons of cigarettes I got from Stardust City for Captain Lane."
Jasper was taken aback but responded, "William, you always send me gifts. You're making me overflattered."
"We're like family; it's nothing."
After 8 PM.
The fourth team of the Black Street District precinct was working overtime in the conference room.
At the front, Jasper pointed to Joe's photo on the blackboard, looking serious. "The witness identified him as the main culprit in Zephyr's murder. He was also a prime suspect in the gun trafficking case before the murder. So, the police department has ordered us to merge the cases. Each of the five districts has formed a task force, and we need to solve this within a month."
Alexander looked at the photo on the blackboard and instantly remembered seeing him in River State. This was the guy who had kidnapped Alex.
This was a crucial clue. If Alexander revealed it, the task force would immediately have a direct lead to solve the case.
