Chapter 192 Plans and Changes

Outside the building, the last gunman was freaking out. He was torn between the fear of the bloodthirsty Alexander and Elbert inside and the dread of more cops showing up.

"What now?" he muttered, hesitating.

With a loud bang, Alexander burst through the iron door, gun blazing.

The gunman dodged and bolted.

Alexander chased him for a few steps and then spun back inside. He stomped hard on the head of the burly guy wrestling with Elbert.

One stomp, and the guy's head smacked the concrete, leaving him dazed.

Elbert pinned the guy's gun with his knee, grabbed his head, and slammed it into the ground until he passed out.

The hallway fell dead silent.

Alexander collapsed, his throat tight, vision blurry, and ears ringing.

Elbert, straddling the thug, was gasping for air, pale and exhausted.

"Jasper wants me dead," Alexander muttered, feeling like his body incredibly heavy.

Elbert grabbed the thug's gun, sat down, and looked at Alexander. "You sure Jasper's behind this?"

"Just a hunch," Alexander replied.

Elbert was quiet for a moment and then said, "I can find out."

Alexander blinked. "How?"

Elbert stood up and tied the thug's hands behind his back to a heating pipe with his belt. "I'll try."

On the street, Loren was running, clutching his arm. He needed to find John, but his radio was jammed, and Jasper had taken his phone. Gunfire echoed around him, and he had no idea where John, Xavier, and the others were.

In the Welfare District, a dozen armed officers had cornered Bishop and his group, who had just met up with Joe, in a small alley, leading to a fierce shootout.

Joe, at the alley entrance, shouted, "Don't panic! We can get out!"

"We can't, man," a young guy on the left said, trembling. "It's a dead end. Once we're out of ammo, we're done."

"I said we can get out, so we will," Joe snapped. "Get ready to charge left. We can't let them close in."

Behind a wall, John watched Joe's group, cursing, "Why didn't they call in the special task force? With just a few of us and these crappy guns, how many will die to capture them? What's Jasper thinking?"

Xavier rolled his eyes. "Everyone here, except us, is Jasper's guy. He even took our comms. He's trying to prevent leaks, afraid there's a mole. Got it?"

"Then why isn't he afraid we'll leak?"

"Who knows what that idiot's thinking," Xavier said, shaking his head.

As they talked, the gunfire in the alley intensified. Joe, with an M-series rifle, provided cover.

Bishop, leading two young guys, charged out, aiming for a weak spot in the left-side encirclement.

On the left, four officers tried to block them but found the enemy's firepower too strong. And as long as they didn't kill them with one shot, these guys wouldn't even flinch, continuing to fire with bloodshot eyes.

The encircling officers quickly scattered, crouching and dodging to the right.

"There's a chance, charge out!" Joe shouted, waving his hand.

Inside the courtyard.

Just as Jasper was about to flank them, his phone rang.

"Move forward and hold them off," Jasper shouted to his men, "Our backup is almost here."

The remaining officers moved forward, crouching.

Jasper, trailing behind, reached into his pocket and answered the call, "Hello?"

"Alexander's side didn't go well. We lost two men," the voice on the other end said succinctly.

Jasper froze, his face turning grim as he growled, "Damn it, are all your men useless? I sent them so far away, with only two people nearby, but you still couldn't get it done?"

"You said Alexander only had two rookie officers with him, who would wet their pants at the sound of gunfire," the other person shouted angrily,. "But as soon as my men confronted them, one kid shielded Alexander, and the other helped Alexander take down two of my guys. They didn't even run, got it?"

Jasper was stunned.

"You gave the wrong information, so don't blame me," the other person shouted again, "My men died in vain, and you bear the main responsibility."

Jasper snapped back to reality, too pressed for time to argue further. He urgently asked, "Are the two men who were taken down dead?"

"Not sure."

"Did the gunman get exposed to Alexander?" Jasper gritted his teeth and asked.

"Probably not, because Rodolfo was picked up by my men. Alexander should still think they're Joe's associates, here to help," the other person responded after a brief consideration.

Jasper sighed in relief. "Can you go back and finish the job?"

"Definitely not, we're already gone."

"Damn it!" Jasper cursed and hung up .

At the same time.

Elbert's voice suddenly came over the radio, "Request support at the west side gate! We've encountered accomplices of the suspect, and there's been a shootout. Captain James is down and unconscious. I've cornered one suspect in the building; he can't get out. Captain Lane, please send reinforcements immediately."

Jasper broke out a sweat upon hearing this.

He thought, 'The gunman was still alive and cornered. If he got caught and confessed, it would be catastrophic.'

'What to do?'

As Jasper hesitated, John suddenly responded on the radio, "I'm heading to support the west side gate. Elbert, don't engage the suspect directly; ensure Captain James' safety."

After a brief pause, Jasper replied, "I'm only about one thousand feet from the west side gate. John, don't take your team away from the encirclement point. I'll go rescue Alexander."

"I want to take my team to support the west side gate," John said, not trusting Jasper.

"I said I'm closer to Alexander. Don't leave the encirclement point, or if the suspect escapes from your position, I'll make sure you face charges," Jasper shouted.

"Damn it!"

John, hearing this, slammed the radio to the ground.

"Don't worry, I don't think he'll dare delay," Xavier, seeing John's concern, quickly reassured him, "After all, everyone heard the call for help."

Inside the courtyard.

Just as the officers were about to flank, one turned to Jasper and asked, "Should we go back to the west side gate to rescue Alexander?"

Jasper hesitated briefly and replied, "No, keep flanking. I'll call others to rescue him. There's only one suspect left."

With that, Jasper, sweating and grim-faced, ran towards the west side gate.

In a car a hundred meters diagonally opposite the west side gate, Elbert hung up the radio and said softly, "Let's see if you come yourself."
