Chapter 151 Bribery
At Home.
Alexander looked at Luke, feeling genuinely angry. First of all, this incident cost him a lot of money, and the key point was that he couldn't come up with that much himself. In the end, it was Emily who had to owe someone a favor to borrow it. Moreover, Alexander already had a tense relationship with Jasper and Riley, so while handling this matter, he not only had to put his ego aside to ask for help from the person he least wanted to ask but also got scolded by the hypocritical Riley. So, anyone in his shoes would be angry.
Luke, no longer his usual stubborn self, kept his head down and repeatedly said, "I'll find a way to pay you back."
His words made Alexander even angrier. He immediately shouted, "How will you pay me back? It's lucky for you if you can support yourself. I provide you with food and drink, but you repay me by getting into fights. You have no sense of boundaries. I'm telling you, I've done my best. If you can stay, then stay properly; if not, leave immediately."
Luke kept his head down and remained silent.
"There is really not a single day of peace in my life," Alexander cursed, hands on his hips, angrily picking up a glass of water.
"Alright, the money's spent. No point in arguing anymore," John advised softly, then reminded him, "You need to go back to the team tonight. Jasper took on a gun trafficking case and notified everyone to come back for a meeting."
"He wants me there?"
"He didn't specifically mention you, but he said everyone," John replied with a smile. "You'd better go, or he'll cause trouble again."
"Let's go," Alexander responded reluctantly, ignoring Luke, and left the room first.
"Stay home and don't cause trouble for Alexander. It's not easy for him," John instructed Luke before turning and leaving.
Luke lifted his head, wiped the tears from the corners of his eyes with a slightly aggrieved look, and reluctantly glanced around the room before slowly walking to his bed.
In the Car.
John, holding the steering wheel, sneered and said, "You know, Jasper tried to pin the case on you yesterday."
"Pin it on me?" Alexander was taken aback. "What for?"
"He wanted Penelope to frame you, saying you had financial dealings with the butcher shop," John explained, turning his head. "He's really insidious. He wants you to get fired."
Alexander, already angry, immediately thought of how Finn, a thug, had extorted $2,200 from him, making his frustration even more intense.
"I'm telling you, as long as we don't go back to the first team, life will be unbearable," John continued to analyze, "If the principal and the deputy don't get along, how can we work together? It's too awkward."
"Do they really think I'm an easy target?" Alexander sneered and dialed Matt's number.
A few seconds later, the call connected. "Hello? Alexander."
"Is Robert feeling better?" Alexander asked.
"Although he's still a bit down, he's starting to take charge again. He's getting through it." Matt sighed. "We might be back in Pine City in a while."
"You can try to persuade him if you have time."
"Yeah." Matt nodded.
"Hey, let me tell you something," Alexander said in a low voice after asking about Robert. "I need you to find a couple of people for me. New faces..."
The Next Day at Noon
Jasper went to the police hospital again and saw Finn on the bed. "Why did you have someone call me over?"
"Jasper, Jasper... close the door," Finn replied with a smile.
"Cut the small talk, and get to the point," Jasper said impatiently.
"Close the door. I just want to say a couple of words to you. It'll be quick."
"You're so troublesome." Jasper frowned and closed the door. "Say it."
Finn turned with a smile, opened the drawer of the bedside table, and said, "Yesterday, the officers handling the case brought me the compensation."
"Why are you telling me this?"
"I just wanted to thank you," Finn said quietly, taking out an envelope. "Jasper, without your guidance, I wouldn't have gotten this much compensation. We're all just trying to make a living. At my age, I know the rules."
Jasper was taken aback and immediately walked to the bedside, bending down to ask, "What do you mean?"
"My hospital bill was $200, so I have $2,000 left." Finn grinned. "I'm giving you some money as a thank you."
"Don't give me that." Jasper waved his hand.
"Jasper, if you don't take this money, it means you look down on me, and I won't be able to get by in the future." Finn cursed Jasper inwardly but kept smiling, pulling Jasper's arm and forcing the envelope into his pocket.
"Take it back. Don't give me that," Jasper turned sideways, pretending to push away but actually making it easier for Finn to put the money in his pocket.
"Come on. Just the right thing to do," Finn said with a smile, "Jasper, I'm planning to open a small gambling den soon, and I'll need your help."
Although Jasper received bribes from the Patrick family every month, $1,000 in cash was still a significant amount for him, so he smiled. "At your age, you should indeed do something proper. But whatever business you do, don't go too far. I'll put in a good word for you at the police department and make sure you're taken care of."
"Don't worry.I'll run the business well, and there will be money every month," Finn replied sensibly.
"Alright, take care of yourself. I have to get back to the station."
"Take care, Jasper."
"Leaving now," Jasper said, satisfied, and walked out of the room.
On the bed, Finn, seeing Jasper leave, muttered bitterly, "Damn it, why am I so unlucky to get involved in this..."
Before he could finish, the door opened again, and two young men walked in leisurely.
Evening
After a busy day and night in the police station, Alexander returned home, exhausted.
As soon as he entered, Alexander glanced around but didn't see Luke. He only saw a note under a glass on the table.
Curious, Alexander walked over, moved the glass, and looked at the messy handwriting on the note, stunned.
"Alexander, I'm sorry for causing you trouble this time. I'm leaving. No need for words of gratitude. When I grow up, I'll definitely repay what I owe you."
Reading the note, Alexander's heart sank.
Yes, although Luke seemed carefree, he was very fragile inside. Were his words yesterday too harsh?
Alexander slowly put down the note, turned, and ran out of the room, heading straight to the butcher shop next door.
