Chapter 164 Conclusive Evidence

Before Alexander kicked off the case, he knew their task force would hit resistance once they went after Zephyr. So, he took Zephyr straight to forensics to lock down the evidence ASAP.

In the hallway.

Alexander turned off his phone, yawned, and said, "The next few days are gonna be tough. We shouldn't go home or back to the precinct."

"Scared that the higher-ups will lean on you?" John asked.

Alexander grinned. "More like scared of stacks of cash being waved in my face, and I won't be able to say no."

John was taken aback and then nodded. "Honestly, I'm worried I won't be able to resist either."

They fell silent.

After a while, John asked, "Did you clear things up with Samuel?"

"Of course," Alexander nodded. "Wouldn't have made such a big move otherwise."

"Samuel's got guts," John replied with a smile. "Arresting the Chief Councilor's son, that's bold."

"Samuel's got his reasons," Alexander said quietly. "Think about it, dealing with the Patrick family alone is tough. If the Wilde family from Riverside is tight with them, we're in a bad spot."

John was quiet for a long time, then shook his head with a bitter smile. "So, it's just a few of us standing out for this couple?"

Alexander was stunned and replied helplessly, "Honestly, if I hadn't seen what went down at Dominic's house, I might've handled this case differently. But... Look at it positively. No matter why people are doing it, as long as the outcome is good, isn't that enough?"

"You do have a point." John nodded.

After chatting a bit more, John left with his team to rest, while Alexander stayed to guard Zephyr.

Two days.

Two whole days.

William still hadn't found out where Zephyr was being held, and Adam was getting anxious because his connections couldn't dig up any details.

At noon.

Looking disheveled, Alexander held over thirty forensic reports and knocked on Samuel's office door.

"Come in."

A voice was heard from inside.

Alexander pushed the door open but didn't see Samuel. "Director Newman, you here?"

"Come in, Alexander. Have a seat," Virgil Newman, the deputy director in charge of logistics, smiled and waved him in.

"Okay." Alexander nodded and sat down.

Virgil looked at him with a smile and asked softly, "Samuel told me about the case you're handling. How's it going? Any results?"

Knowing Virgil was one of those Samuel trusted, Alexander handed over the forensic reports. "The case can be closed."

"So quickly? Did you get a confession?" Virgil asked.

"No," Alexander shook his head. "Zephyr's slick. After the forensic exam, he clammed up. But the evidence we've got is enough to nail him."

"Okay." Virgil nodded as he flipped through the reports.

Alexander continued, "The murder weapon was a broken wine bottle. We got Zephyr's fingerprints on it, a perfect match. Both victims had scuffles with Zephyr before they were killed. Our forensic team found his skin cells under their nails. Plus, Zephyr's got two noticeable scratch marks and a bite mark above his right wrist that matches the female victim's dental impression."

"What about witnesses?" Virgil asked.

"We've got two," Alexander said confidently. "First, Knox confessed that Zephyr told him to get rid of the bodies. Zephyr admitted to him that he killed the victims. Second, Dominic's friend Cade can testify that Zephyr dragged Lily into a private room to assault her. He can also identify Knox and others who buried the bodies."

"Can Cade testify in court?"

"Yes, he agreed to," Alexander replied.

"Good. The evidence is enough to convict him," Virgil replied with a smile. "Take him to the prison for special management. Keep these reports and submit them to the prosecution later."

"Director Newman, this case wore us out. I haven't slept in a bed for days," Alexander said with a smile. "Zephyr's got connections. We can't go easy on him just because of some pushback, right?"

"With this evidence, he's done for."

"That puts my mind at ease," Alexander stretched and stood up. "I'll go rest now."

"Hold on."

"What is it?"

"Did Samuel tell you a new batch of officers is coming from Stardust City?" Virgil asked.

"He mentioned it, but they haven't arrived yet," Alexander nodded.

"Their onboarding took longer. They're still in Stardust City," Virgil said with a smile. "This afternoon, go to the precinct and bring them back."

"Me?" Alexander was taken aback.

"Are you occupied? When the newcomers arrive, someone has to mentor them. If you bring them back, Samuel can make you their instructor," Virgil reminded him. "It's not a big title, but it looks good on your record."

"Alright, I'll go this afternoon. Thanks, Director Newman," Alexander replied with a big smile.

"Okay, you can go now." Virgil nodded.

In the afternoon, Alexander changed into casual clothes and headed to the Pine City Police Headquarters.

Around 2 PM.

Adam drove his beat-up pickup to a secluded coffee house in the city center.

Inside, seven or eight middle-aged men were chatting and laughing.

"Is everyone here?" Adam greeted with a smile.

"Come, Adam, have a seat. Let me introduce you. This is from the Pine City Legislative Council..." A middle-aged man stood up to welcome him.

Meanwhile.

Duke lay in bed, groggily turning over and calling out, "Baby, get me a glass of water."

"Here, baby, let me feed you," Joe, sitting by the bed, replied with a smile.

Hearing the voice, Duke's eyes snapped open in shock as he looked at Joe. "You bastards... how did you get in?"
