Chapter 150 The Troublemaker Jasper

Jasper was very cunning. Although his professional skills were average, he was very good at intrigue in the office. After detaining Penelope and others, he didn't thoroughly investigate the case but instead tried to frame Alexander for covering up for the butcher shop. Luke had committed the assault, but it had no direct connection to Alexander. Moreover, Luke was a minor, so even a severe sentence would result in a hefty compensation and criminal penalties. However, if Penelope admitted to having financial dealings with Alexander, things would get serious, and Alexander could be directly fired.

In the interrogation room, Jasper used intimidation and deceit to try to get Penelope to implicate Alexander. But Penelope, with some social experience, noticed that mentioning Alexander's name didn't solve the problem immediately, and Jasper kept guiding her. So, Penelope started to play dumb, refusing to admit any relationship with Alexander.

From this point of view, Penelope was quite principled. If it were someone else, considering her not-so-close relationship with Alexander and Jasper's threats and inducements, they might have directly implicated Alexander. But Penelope didn't do that. She preferred to endure a punishment rather than create trouble out of thin air.

After a while, Jasper saw that Penelope was too slick, and since Alexander indeed had no connection to the butcher shop, he had to leave disappointed and go home.

The next morning.

In the police department's hospital, Jasper saw Finn, who had been stabbed multiple times.

"Do you know who I am?"

"Y-yes." Finn, almost entirely wrapped in bandages, lay on the hospital bed looking like a mummy. "You're Jasper, the investigator. The other officers told me."

"Yes." Jasper nodded and asked, "How's your financial situation?"

"Not good." Finn shamelessly asked, "Jasper, how do you think my case should be handled?"

"Ask for compensation from the other party."

"Can I ask for $800?" Finn said through gritted teeth.

"$800?" Jasper laughed, bending down to look at Finn. "Is that all you're worth?"

Finn was stunned.

"Let me tell you something. The kid who stabbed you doesn't have residency, and since your injury is classified as severe, if you refuse to settle, they'll panic." Jasper cunningly advised Finn, "Because if you don't agree to settle, the kid will be detained and await trial. After serving his sentence, he'll have a criminal record and will definitely be deported from the district, unable to apply for permanent residency for ten years."

Finn, a small-time thug who didn't understand the law, brightened up and replied, "Is the punishment that severe?"

"What do you think?" Jasper raised two fingers at Finn. "Ask for this amount; he can definitely pay it."

An hour later.

"What did you say, $2000?" Alexander looked at Finn in shock. "Are you kidding me?"

"If you don't pay this amount, I won't settle." Finn grinned and replied, "Luke doesn't have residency in the district. If I don't agree to settle, he'll definitely go to jail, and after serving his sentence, he'll be deported and unable to apply for residency for ten years."

When Alexander heard this, his heart filled with hatred. He realized that Finn couldn't have gotten such detailed information on his own, so it was definitely that bastard Jasper who gave him the idea.

"Are you going to pay or not?" Finn tilted his head at Alexander. "If you don't, I'll notify the police to proceed with the case."

Alexander's face turned red as he stared at Finn. After a long silence, he nodded. "Fine, $2000. I'll get it for you."

"$2000 is the compensation," Finn immediately added, "But you also need to give me another $200 for lost wages."

Alexander was stunned for a moment, then laughed angrily. "Fine, I'll give you $2200."

"Let me tell you..."

Before Finn could continue, Alexander grabbed him by the collar, leaned in, and said face-to-face, "Don't go too far. I work at the police department. Can you guarantee you'll never fall into my hands?"

Hearing this, Finn felt genuinely scared. He usually did whatever made money, and he had quite a few criminal records, so he was really afraid of Alexander targeting him.

"Fine, $2200 it is."

"Wait here, and I'll get the money." Alexander left the room after saying this.

Around noon.

In the courtyard of No. 88, Alexander hesitated for a long time before calling Emily.

In less than twenty minutes, Emily arrived on a small electric scooter, her hair blown into a mess, and stopped at the gate.

"What's up? Why did you call me back at noon?" Emily's face was red from the cold as she jumped off the scooter and asked.

Alexander hesitated for a long time. "Can you lend me some money? I'm really out of options."

Emily was surprised. "Why are you suddenly asking me for money?"

Ten minutes later, in Emily's room, Alexander explained the situation to her.

After listening, Emily looked at Alexander curiously and asked, "$2200 is not a small amount. Is it worth it for a kid who has nothing to do with you?"

"Don't test me; I know what you're thinking." Alexander sighed and replied, "Honestly, I did hesitate. Luke has nothing to do with me, and I've already taken care of him for a long time, which is quite kind of me. So, if I don't help him, no one would blame me. But the problem is, if he spends a few years in an adult prison and then gets deported, unable to apply for residency for ten years, his life will be ruined. He's still young, and the cost of this mistake is too high."

Emily remained silent.

"Last night, I couldn't sleep." Alexander lowered his head and sighed sincerely. "Lying in bed, I thought about myself because Luke's experience is so similar to mine. If I hadn't met the person who adopted me when I was young, would I have died outside long ago? In life, you always meet a couple of good people. Maybe, for Luke, I'm that person."

"You can really convince yourself." Emily smiled.

"The business outside has been slow lately." Alexander continued, "Robert isn't doing well either, so I don't want to borrow money from them. But I don't have many wealthy friends, so I thought of you."

Emily blinked and spread her hands. "You really overestimate me. I haven't asked my family for money in a long time. The only one who can help me a bit is my brother. So, right now, I can't even get $220, let alone $2200."

"Then... forget it."

"But, although I don't have money, I do have good connections." Emily smiled and took out her phone, looking at Alexander. "Write me an IOU for $2300, and I'll ask a colleague to lend it to you."

"Okay."

"The $100 interest is for her, after all, she doesn't know you." Emily emphasized.

"Alright, once the pharmaceutical business picks up, I'll pay it back immediately." Alexander nodded and started writing the IOU on the table.

Later that night, around ten o'clock, Luke was brought back by John, and Penelope and the others were released after paying their fines.

Inside the house, Luke kept his head down, not saying a word.

Alexander, with a stern face, scolded, "Do you have any sense of propriety? What kind of family do you come from? You're just a small-time thug, why did you stab someone? Did you think about the consequences? Do you think I'm a god?"

Luke looked up at Alexander, his eyes avoiding his gaze, and replied, "I'll pay you back the money."

Pine City District.

Joe glanced at the man in front of him. "I have a gun, but let's be clear. You can sell on my behalf, but you must settle accounts with me every week. If you don't, I will break up with you."

"Don't worry, I'll definitely settle the accounts on time," The man replied nonchalantly.

Joe pondered for a moment, then nodded.

A burly guy on the left placed two bags on the table. "Check the goods."
