Chapter 095

Roe's POV
"What the fuck?" I cursed hitting the steering wheel of the car in frustration, as I drove back home, remembering everything that had happened at the auction, everything was going on perfectly until the necklace was withdrawn.
Grandpa Shan had spoken of the necklace many times since Aunty Amelia's returned, without the necklace for the past eighteen years, she was missing for a year, and a lot of things happened during that one year she went missing, I was only one year old when she left, I didn't know I have an aunty from my dad's side of the family, till she returns a few years ago. My father had just died in a car accident on one of those business trips and my mother had left me, I don't know the reason she left because I was just two years and Grandpa was the only one taking care of me with my aunt showing up, it was like a relief for him.
She didn't say the reason she left or how she had been all those times, she wasn't here, all she did say was she lost the family's heirloom, and she said she was going to look for it but for all these years she hadn't been able to get it and now, grandpa had given me the responsibility to look for it, even though aunty Amelia had been searching for it, my grandpa words hit my head
"Roe, that necklace… it’s our legacy. If it ever leaves the family, it’s like losing a part of who we are, you need to find it, your aunty might have lost it but I am sure, someone else got it,” my grandpa had said those words with pain in his heart.
I had nodded then, determined to bring it back especially when we found out that the necklace was among the auction but now, I just lost it not because someone could outbid me but the fact that it was retrieved. "And that girl, why the fuck is she bidding for it?" I scoffed maneuvering the car to the second lane, my thoughts went to the girl that Grandpa and I met at the playground. She was sitting a few rows behind me, her long hair cascading over her shoulders, her eyes fixed intently on the necklace, those didn't go unnoticed to me, she reminded me of Aunty in all those pictures we had together when I was younger.
She had that perfect resemblance that one could mistake her for Aunty's doppelganger but fuck she was desperate to get the necklace, she kept urging the CEO of Adams group to get it for her. I had no idea who she was or why she wanted the necklace, but the thought of it slipping away to someone outside the family made my stomach churn, even though I know I could bid any amount even if it's billions of dollars and I know no one in that hall would be able to bid higher than me except CEO Logan, and I don't think he is here and while will he be interested in that necklace to everyone it's like a regular necklace but the fucking thing is, the donor withdrew it.
My heart sank. When Mr. Morgan withdrew the necklace, I wanted to go to him but I saw the CEO going to him so I just retrieved my step, I could always do that some other time.
I pulled over at Shan's mansion while I walked towards the door, I knew grandfather's heart would be shattered, appearing here without the necklace, that was close, I was so close to getting it. I hesitated at the door, my hand hovering over the doorknob. How could I tell my grandfather that the necklace was gone? How could I tell him that I didn't even get the information about the donor? I shut my eyes and imagined the disappointment in my grandfather’s eyes, the pain of losing something so precious. But there was no way I could avoid it.
With a deep breath, I pushed the door open and stepped inside. The house was quiet, except for the faint sound of a television playing in the background. My grandfather was in the living room, sitting in his favorite chair, his eyes focused on the screen. I swallowed hard and walked in, my footsteps heavy on the marble floor.
“Grandpa,” I called softly.
My grandfather looked up, his face lighting up at the sight of me, I knew that look he was expecting good news and I knew he was confident that I could bring it home, money is never a problem for Shan's family. “Oh, dear grandson! How did it go?”
I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. The guilt and shame were too much. I looked down at the floor, unable to meet my grandfather’s gaze. "Where is it?" He asked when I didn't reply.
“I couldn’t get it,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “I’m so sorry.”
This was the first time, I disappointed my grandfather, everything he had asked me to do, I had always done but this one, I failed, the room was silent for a moment, and I could feel the weight of my grandfather’s stare when I finally forced my eyes to look up at him, expecting to see disappointment reeking from my grandfather’s face. But what I saw instead was a look of understanding, mixed with sadness.
“It’s okay, Roe,” my grandpa said quietly. “I know you did your best.”
I shook my head, tears welling up in my eyes. “No, it’s not okay. I should have done more. I should have… I don’t know, but I will find a way.”
"Who got the necklace? Maybe, we could pay double of whatever he spends," I look at Grandpa wiping the tears from my eyes.
"No one got it, the donor retrieved it," Grandpa's gaze became stronger, "yes, the necklace was retrieved, so no one got it," I said falling on the couch, but my mind went to the auction.
“Grandpa, do you remember the girl we met at the playground a few days ago? She was there, too. She wanted the necklace,”
Grandpa frowned, running his hand on his head, trying to recall the girl I was talking about. “A girl? What girl?”
"The girl that looked like Aunty Amelia, she was here, she wanted the necklace desperately and when I was bidding for the necklace, I noticed she was staring at me, and she made CEO Casper bid for it.
Grandpa's stare becomes stronger, “Did she say why she wanted the necklace?”
I shook my head. “No. But she bid higher than anyone else apart from me and only showed the necklace was as important to her as it was to us." I concluded.
"Why would she want the necklace? Do you think.." I interrupted Grandpa.
"Do you think Aunty Amelia had a child that time, you said she went missing?"
"Have a child?" Before my grandpa could respond, we both heard a noise from the hallway. I turned to see my aunty Amelia standing there, her expression a mixture of curiosity and concern.
"Who had a child?"
