Chapter 288 Have the Face to Ask Me About the Odds
In a while, it was confirmed that Katniss would go abroad in three days.
The phone hung up, and the unique silence of the night overwhelmed her. It was already early morning, and there were very few lights on outside the window.
The twinkling lights reflected in Katniss's clear eyes, and her heart suddenly ached uncontrollably.
Perhaps sensing her low mood, the baby in her belly started to move, kicking her repeatedly.
Her slender fingers gently covered her belly, and her eyes unconsciously softened.
At least, the baby was safe.
She hadn't seen Saskia for a long time, and the news of going abroad was only mentioned on the eve of her departure.
She thought that this way, she could avoid meeting, as Saskia still didn't know about her pregnancy.
But Saskia hung up the phone, bought a bunch of things, and came over, knocking on the door and carrying groceries, shouting as she walked in.
"Katniss, you're leaving tomorrow and only telling me now. That's really not fair. You didn't even say we should have a meal together before you go. Are we still friends or not?"
The rest of her words stopped abruptly when Saskia saw Katniss's protruding belly.
The things in her hand fell to the ground.
Her eyes widened, and after a moment, she screamed and repeatedly confirmed that Katniss was pregnant.
"Why didn't you tell me you were coming?" Katniss looked at her exaggerated acting, knowing the shock was real but not enough to faint.
Saskia sat up straight, looking serious, "Whose child is it?"
"What do you think?" Katniss retorted.
Suddenly, Saskia slapped her forehead hard, "Damn it, does he know?"
Matilda and Sophia stood in the dining room watching, afraid that Saskia might say something to upset Katniss.
In the two days since Katniss decided to leave, she had been preoccupied, often standing by the window lost in thought. They didn't know what she was thinking, but it seemed they could see through her thoughts.
Besides Tristan, what else could it be?
Going abroad was best for her, allowing her to give birth quietly.
The last time they unexpectedly ran into Tristan at the supermarket, it scared Sophia.
Sophia decided to go abroad with her, leaving the education institution entirely to Matilda.
Six months apart, but neither of them said a word of reluctance, their minds focused on Katniss.
"Matilda, you go." Sophia nudged Matilda's shoulder, signaling her to sit over there.
In case Saskia said something she shouldn't, it could be stopped in time.
Matilda immediately put down what she was holding and sat next to Katniss, linking arms with her.
Katniss smiled at her, then answered Saskia's question, "He doesn't know."
Hearing this, Saskia frowned even more, "I'll keep your secret. When I came today, Nicholas asked me to persuade you. You and Tristan reaching this point isn't what he wanted. Whether it's a misunderstanding or something else, Tristan isn't doing well now. With Travis and Eudora, he was never afraid, but this time it's because of you that he..."
Ruined, this word couldn't be used on Tristan.
"But I won't persuade you. For the sake of the baby, you should stay far away. But are you sure you won't tell Tristan about such a big thing?"
After all, Tristan is the father and has the right to know.
Before Katniss could say anything, Matilda interrupted, "What would be the consequences of telling him? Not to mention what he might do, just think about his wife. She would definitely use the baby to help Tristan take over Synergy Global Corporation, treating Katniss and the baby as tools. The more people who know about this, the more danger Katniss will be in!"
"You're right." Saskia scratched her head, wanting to say something but not knowing where to start.
It all felt a bit strange.
She didn't bring it up again, focusing on the baby instead, "Boy or girl? Did the doctor inform you during the check-up?"
"They didn't say. Boy or girl, it doesn't matter." Katniss felt a mix of emotions, unable to express them, so she simply kept quiet.
During the meal, besides Saskia complaining about Katniss always keeping things from her, Aaron was also unhappy.
They had agreed he would be there for the birth, but now Katniss was going abroad, giving birth, and coming back. What role did he have left?
"How about I take a year off from school and go abroad with you?" After a while, he put down his utensils and said, "You and Sophia going abroad alone isn't convenient. I am capable of undertaking tasks within my capacity, thereby alleviating your burden."
"Are you even a man?" Saskia retorted, "You're just a boy at best."
Aaron was immediately unhappy, "Why am I not a man? Besides being young, I'm strong enough! I can carry her, I can do a lot of things."
The two of them started arguing at the table.
Helpless, Katniss had to say, "You can't take a break from school. It's hard enough to pick up your studies again. How can you just take a break?"
She wouldn't allow it, and Aaron didn't dare argue, continuing to his meal in silence.
After Saskia left, Sophia brought up George's matter with Matilda again.
"It's been two or three months since we talked about living together. Have you not told him, or is he unwilling to tell his mom?" Sophia was worried that during the six months Matilda would be here, she might do something she shouldn't.
"He's been away for intensive training and didn't even come back for New Year's. It might be a while before he returns. He did say that when he comes back, he would arrange for us to meet his mom, but now you're going abroad, so we'll have to wait."
Matilda realized it had been over two months since she last saw George.
Because of the intensive training, George was very busy, and there were few texts and calls.
She actually felt a rare sense of relief.
"When he comes back, maybe we can have Mom return to the country for a bit. Your matters are the most important." Katniss added, "Your marriage is a big concern for Mom."
"That's not going to work." Sophia quickly denied, "A concern can't be rushed. Coming back from abroad in a hurry just to get a title? If he really cares, he should wait for me to come back. After all, I've been waiting for him to talk to his mom about this for a long time."
Matilda quickly linked arms with Sophia and acted coy, "Oh Mom, let's not talk about this. Yesterday we went to the hospital for your check-up, and the doctor said you're recovering very well. So this time, your main task abroad is to take good care of Katniss. If I finish my work early, I'll go abroad before Katniss's due date."
The flight was at 8 AM the next morning, but the three of them weren't sleepy and chatted until late at night before going to their rooms.
After leaving Katniss's house, Saskia felt uneasy. After thinking it over, she told Nicholas that Katniss was going abroad tomorrow.
Nicholas couldn't hold onto this news for ten seconds before calling Tristan.
The Forbes Mansion.
Eudora had come in the afternoon, bringing many snacks that Adelaide liked, and spent the afternoon with her.
She subtly hinted to Adelaide that she wanted to have a good talk with Tristan.
Adelaide didn't respond until before dinner when Eudora made it clear, "Grandma, you know I'm now the main force Travis is using to fight for Synergy Global Corporation. Don't you want to win me over to help Tristan?"
"But it's not up to me. Tristan is mad at me and hasn't been here for a long time." Adelaide felt a chill in her heart, understanding but still feeling sad.
Eudora immediately said, "I don't expect you to arrange for me to be by his side to help him like you did with Katniss. I just hope you can let me meet him."
After a long time, Adelaide relented, "I'll call him, but I can't guarantee he'll come."
"Okay!" Eudora's face lit up with joy.
Although she saw Tristan almost every day at the company, attending meetings together and bringing important documents for him to sign, Tristan barely looked at her and was very sparing with his words.
Several times, she had just started to talk, only to be kicked out of his office.
Adelaide's involvement had some effect. Tristan hadn't been back to The Forbes Mansion for two or three months.
So when he received Adelaide's call, he came over directly.
Dinner was already prepared, and Adelaide, who hadn't seen Tristan for a long time, couldn't contain her excitement. She quickly asked Royce to prepare Tristan's favorite fruits for after the meal.
Tristan glanced at the already seated Eudora, lowered his eyes without expression, and sat down, slouching lazily in the chair and lighting a cigarette.
His attitude was distant and cold. Besides occasionally responding to Adelaide, it was as if Eudora didn't exist.
"Tristan, what are your chances in the bet with Travis?" Eudora seized an opportunity to ask.
"Why?" Tristan sneered, "Did he send you to gather information? Since you took over Synergy Global Corporation, how many projects have been snatched by Benjamin? Do you have the face to ask about my chances?"
The more projects Eudora lost, the better his chances, right?
His mouth was full of sarcasm, and he mercilessly directed all kinds of harsh words at Eudora.
Even though Eudora had comforted herself countless times on the way here, thinking he was only so hostile because he was heartbroken over Katniss, she was still hurt.
"Tristan, Travis isn't as simple as you think. He has a backup plan! If you understand, my heart is still with you, and I will do my best to help you."
A mocking laugh echoed clearly in the quiet dining room. Tristan's seemingly smiling eyes were full of sarcasm.
"So, what do you want from me?"
Eudora opened her mouth, but even though Tristan's question was light, she felt as if she was being choked by sarcasm and couldn't speak.
But who ddin't have something to gain? She loved him, was that wrong?
"If I help you, Travis won't let me go, so you must protect me."
Tristan lit another cigarette, flicked the ash, and threw the lighter on the table with a crisp sound, "Haven't you protected yourself well enough? Always playing both sides and trying to please everyone."
