Chapter 414 Surviving Will Make You Stronger
Aaron confessed. Ten minutes ago, he confessed to everything. It's said that before confessing, he borrowed a phone to make a call.
But no one knew who he called. The officer guarding him said the call lasted only thirteen seconds before it was hung up.
"How could he confess?" Katniss was anxious, flipping off the hospital bed and almost knocking over the bowl of oatmeal on the table.
Emory's phone rang again. "Don't worry, the police said Aaron has something to tell you. Here's the voice message."
He handed the phone to Katniss. It was a message less than ten seconds long.
"Katniss, you said hard work pays off. I believe that, but the effort shouldn't be wasted. It's hard to overturn the case. I give up."
"This guy." Emory had only met Aaron a few times but had heard about him from Nicholas.
He admired Aaron greatly. Aaron's voice on the phone was so mature, it made one's heart ache.
Tristan stood by the hospital bed, his deep gaze falling on Katniss.
She had slept well last night because she felt at ease.
She believed that no matter what, she could get Aaron out.
But now?
Aaron confessed, and no one could help him. There was no way out.
Katniss handed the phone back to Emory, then grabbed her bag and walked out of the hospital room.
"Don't worry, I'll go home to see Evie first. You stay here and cooperate with the doctors."
She left in a hurry, not saying another word about Aaron.
This left Emory puzzled. He looked at Tristan and asked, "Should we follow her? She might rush to the police station to get Aaron out."
"No need." Tristan believed she wouldn't be that impulsive. "Aaron's situation is well-known. Those who know him are already jealous of his talent. Even if he gets out, he can't escape the ugliness of human nature. So he gave up himself. Katniss will know how to help him best once she calms down."
Serving a few years in prison didn't mean he wouldn't come out; what was important was the future.
Katniss returned home and heard Evie's voice as she changed her shoes at the entrance.
"Mom." Evie crawled on the carpet to the entrance, smiling at Katniss.
"You're back? What were you doing all night?" Sophia chased after Evie and picked her up. Evie struggled to reach Katniss.
After changing her shoes and putting down her bag, Katniss quickly walked over and took Evie into her arms.
Smelling the disinfectant on her, Sophia's smile faded. "You went to the hospital? Are you feeling unwell?"
"Tristan is in the hospital." Katniss didn't mention Aaron. "Thank you for your help these past two days."
Evie tightly hugged Katniss with her little arms, looking up and kissing her face.
Katniss turned her head and said, "Mommy hasn't washed her face yet. Play with Grandma for a bit, and I'll come play with you after I wash up."
Seeing Evie's dissatisfied look, she added, "I'll take you to see your dad in a couple of days."
It was the weekend. After handling some work online, Katniss spent the morning playing with Evie and Sophia at home.
At noon, she drove Sophia to Matilda's place, and they had lunch together.
Matilda had gained some weight recently, probably because she was in a better mood without the previous troubles.
Katniss seemed fine but kept fiddling with her phone, not sure what she was chatting about.
Eudora was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for intentional homicide.
She was shocked by the sentence. It shouldn't have been a two-year reprieve.
But once she entered the prison, she understood where those two years came from.
Wearing handcuffs and shackles, holding a plastic basin, the shackles on her feet made a crisp sound as she walked through the prison doors.
Seeing the eyes inside, she felt a chill.
"You'll stay in this cell." The guard opened a door.
Inside, seven or eight sturdy women were resting on the beds, their gazes more fierce and intimidating than those outside.
Instinctively, she turned to run, but the guard grabbed her by the neck and pushed her in.
She fell to the ground, feeling a sharp pain.
"Newbie, go get me some foot-washing water." Several inmates gathered around a short-haired woman.
The short-haired woman had tattoos all over her neck, clearly a tough character.
Eudora was still in pain and didn't respond immediately. Someone beside the short-haired woman stepped forward and slapped her.
"Didn't you hear her talking to you?"
"What are you doing?" Eudora cried out in pain, covering her face. "This is a prison, there's law..."
Before she could finish, a sharp pain hit her abdomen.
Several women came over and started beating her. Half an hour later, a bruised Eudora limped to get a basin of foot-washing water, forced to squat down and wash the short-haired woman's feet.
Just as she finished, the short-haired woman suddenly grabbed her hair, pressing her onto the bed, while others poured the foot-washing water into her mouth.
The foul smell made her nauseous, but she couldn't move, only dry heave. As soon as she opened her mouth, the water was poured in.
After a long time, she was finally released, soaked and disheveled.
"Didn't you say that as long as I acknowledged you as my master and did as you said, you wouldn't make things difficult for me?"
The short-haired woman laughed wildly. "You don't seem that stupid. Don't you understand why I'm targeting you? Two years, your days won't be easy. The person who arranged for you to come here was kind. After all, no one who comes to me leaves alive. But they had one request: keep you alive for two years."
After enduring humiliation and suffering, Eudora was finally qualified to go to hell!
Eudora felt like she was in hell, staring at her with cold eyes.
In contrast, Aaron was placed in a separate room, and the guards gave him many books.
Some Aaron had read before, and one was brand new, just unwrapped.
Opening the first page, he saw a familiar handwriting.
[Surviving will make you stronger.]
Katniss held Eudora's phone. Around three in the afternoon, while she was in a meeting, she suddenly received a message.
[Any updates on Katniss recently?]
It was Sam!
She quickly stood up. "Pause the meeting. We'll resume in half an hour."
She read through Eudora's message history with Sam several times and replied in Eudora's tone.
[Tristan is still alive. They seem to be looking for you.]
After a while, Sam replied: [It would be easy for them to find me, but also difficult. They might be overthinking it.]
Hearing this, Katniss took a screenshot of the message and sent it to Tristan.
She wasn't sure why Tristan was looking for Sam, but it certainly wasn't for revenge.
After a long time, Sam suddenly sent another message: [I'll send you an address later. Come over.]
