Chapter 427 Let Me Die

Rupert was stubborn. He shoved the bank card into Katniss's hand and said, "It's not much money; you probably won't think much of it."

Was this really a matter of thinking much of it?

Katniss frowned and tried to persuade him, "Jessica is going to have a baby in a few months. You'll need a lot of money in the future. You should buy a house and settle down. Can't you find some excuse to give it back to me later when you have more money? There's no need to give it to me now."

"The house doesn't matter. She thinks our mom can't take good care of her, so she wants to go to a postpartum recovery center. She's looked at a few, and as long as she's happy, I'm fine with it." Rupert knew Jessica wanted to buy a house before giving birth, but he weighed the pros and cons and decided to give the money to Katniss first.

Anyway, she wouldn't be recovering at home, so even if they bought and renovated the house, they couldn't move in immediately.

Seeing his insistence, Katniss had no choice but to accept it.

When Jessica gives birth, she would return the money, and Rupert would have no reason not to accept it.

"Alright, I'll take the card, but you kept some money for yourself, right?"

Rupert grinned, "I did, don't worry."

Halfway through the meal, Katniss went to the restroom.

When she came out, she saw Tristan leaning against the wall, frowning slightly. He only lifted his eyes when he heard footsteps, his expression softening a bit.

"Waiting for me?" Katniss asked while washing her hands, meeting his gaze in the mirror. "Trying to persuade me to get the divorce papers?"

Tristan walked up to her, placing his hands on the edge of the sink and resting his forehead against hers. "Would you agree?"

Katniss replied without hesitation, "Not only would I not agree, but I'd also be angry."

"Then how dare I bring it up?" Tristan tilted his head, burying his face in her neck and taking a deep breath. "I'm afraid of making you sad, and even more afraid of making you angry."

If sadness was unavoidable, he would at least try to avoid making her angry.

"Are you that afraid of me?" Katniss teased. "When you were hiding in that small village, did you ever think about being afraid of me?"

Feeling guilty, Tristan kissed her ear. "No holding grudges."

"Alright." Katniss dried her hands and pushed him away with her elbow, creating some distance between them. "Don't make me angry before the wedding, or after you die, I'll sell your ashes and have you buried with another woman. After all, I'm your legal wife."

She didn't even want her husband anymore, so she could sell him if she wanted. Who could stop her?

Tristan's eyes widened, and his jaw tightened.

After the meal, the group first saw Adelaide off.

"Matilda, you take Mom and Evie home first. Tristan and I will see Rupert off." It was getting late, and by the time Katniss finished seeing Rupert off, Evie would probably be asleep.

Matilda agreed and took Sophia and Evie to her car.

Rupert said he would take a cab, but Tristan stopped him. Seeing that Katniss had arranged everything, he got into Katniss's car.

Halfway there, Rupert received a call from Jessica, asking where he was. Rupert gave a vague excuse to brush her off.

But when they arrived at Rupert's neighborhood, they found Jessica taking a walk outside and ran into her.

"Katniss?" Jessica thought it was just Katniss. When she turned her head, she saw Rupert getting out of the car and immediately frowned. "What's going on? You've been gone all day, and I thought you were up to no good."

Rupert walked around the car and whispered to Jessica, "I'll explain when we get home."

Then he looked up and smiled, telling Katniss to drive slowly on her way back.

"Drive slowly on the way back?" Jessica was not having it. "What are you two siblings up to? Rupert's been gone all day. Are you covering for him while he does something shady? I'm carrying the Grey family's child!"

Seeing her bad attitude, Katniss got out of the car. "Tristan and I are getting married. We were discussing the wedding today, and Rupert came to support me."

Jessica had heard about this and was already wondering if Katniss would invite them.

Now it seemed she wasn't planning to invite them at all.

"If you wanted support, why just him? Aren't Mom and I family, too? The more family, the more support!"

"You're pregnant. Why run around? I told Katniss not to let you come." Rupert said without hesitation.

Hearing this, Jessica's face turned grim, and she pinched Rupert's waist.

Seeing their constant bickering, Katniss said, "Jessica, I don't need to spell it out, do I? You know why you and Ember can't come."

Her clear eyes seemed to see through Jessica's thoughts, making Jessica feel guilty. "What... what do I know? You think Mom treats you badly, but I haven't treated you badly, have I?"

"But you haven't treated me well either." Katniss didn't want to expose Jessica's schemes. Without Jessica, how could Ember have approached her privately?

Saying it would affect Jessica and Rupert's relationship, but hinting at it made Jessica understand.

Sure enough, Jessica fell silent but looked angry.

"Alright, it's late. Go home and rest." Katniss turned and walked away.

Jessica, in a fit of anger, shook off Rupert's hand and tried to catch up.

The car window suddenly rolled down halfway, and Tristan's cold eyes looked over, scaring Jessica into stopping and taking two steps back.

She hadn't expected Tristan to be in the car!

Frightened by his gaze, she could only watch as Katniss drove away.

"Rupert, if you don't explain this to me, we're not done!" Jessica turned and snapped at Rupert. "Have I treated your sister badly? I welcomed her warmly. How have I wronged her? She looks down on me. If you weren't her brother, who knows if she'd be this close to you!"

"Stop talking nonsense." Rupert frowned, supporting her as they walked into the neighborhood. "My sister isn't like that. If we both went, what about Mom? If she found out and caused trouble?"

Jessica wouldn't let it go. "Your sister looks down on me, and now you do too? What are you hiding from me? I'm carrying your child..."

Their argument faded into the distance.

Late at night, Eudora tore off the equipment from her body, and the machine's alarm sounded clearly in the ward.

The nurse, who was about to leave after rounds, was startled. Her first reaction was to turn off the machine and then look at Eudora. "What are you doing? Your condition is still unstable. You can't remove these machines."

"Don't save me. Living is meaningless." Eudora sat up, her pale face making her look particularly pitiful. "Let me die."
