Chapter 373 Helping a Group of Outsiders to Hide from Me?
Emory was thrown onto the bed like a ragdoll, the pain in his shoulder making him grimace.
"Are you okay?" Lyanna walked over, wanting to massage his shoulder.
He quickly avoided her hand, "Whether I'm okay or not is none of your business. We have nothing to talk about. If you still care about our past, bring the child out and let me see them!"
Lyanna withdrew her hand, lightly biting her lip, hesitantly looking at him, "The child has always been raised by my parents as the family heir and can't leave the country. If you want to see them, you have to come back with me."
"Go back?" Emory sat up, crossing his arms with his elbows on his knees, staring directly at Lyanna, "That's your home, not mine. What do you mean by 'go back'? You deceived my feelings and kept me from seeing my child. What right do you have to ask me to go back with you?"
Anger surged, and he stood up, his usually playful face turning grim. "Lyanna, not being enemies is the last respect I can give you. Stay out of my sight from now on!"
The Patel family had a strong background abroad, and Emory was alone and powerless to take the child from her.
The more it was like this, the more resentment he felt, even turning into hatred.
"Emory, can you listen to my explanation?" Lyanna's voice trembled, "I never thought you would refuse to come back with me to the Patel family..."
"Shut up!" Emory shouted, suddenly raising his hand to grab Lyanna's neck, the veins on his forehead bulging, "I told you, the issue isn't about going back to the Patel family, it's about your deception and your actions preventing me from seeing my child!"
Lyanna could sense that he wasn't using much force, but the less he did, the more it hurt her chest.
Two crystal-clear tears rolled down her cheeks, "Because I want you to come back with me. If you come back, you can see the child!"
"Impossible," Emory said softly, releasing her and turning to leave the room.
Outside, Nelson only returned after seeing him leave.
"He's not going back with you. Give up on that idea." Nelson raised an eyebrow, "They have principles. Your deception is something he can't tolerate."
Lyanna started to sob, but soon realized something, "Then why did you bring me here? Does it have to do with what you told him?"
Nelson's eyes shifted slightly, and he replied, "Confidential, can't say. For now, just make your final plea. If he still doesn't go this time, forget about him and go back to get married."
Just as he finished speaking, Nelson's phone rang, and he went back to his room to answer it.
"Don't worry, I've landed safely and am closely monitoring Tristan's every move, ensuring his safety and keeping my mission here secret. We don't want to alert Tristan and ruin the plan to lure and capture the target. Once we use Tristan to draw them out and succeed in the capture, we'll give him a substantial reward!"
Emory took only an hour and a half to come and go.
Tristan had taken a nap with Evie in the café, and when he returned, Evie was still asleep.
"The reason for coming here has nothing to do with what we thought. He doesn't just focus on that person; there are many he wants to catch. Don't overthink it." Emory was somewhat frustrated and annoyed.
This was his first reunion with Lyanna in the five years since their divorce.
He deliberately suppressed his emotions, not even looking at her.
Half of it was anger, and the other half was fear of losing control, softened by her tender gaze.
He scratched his head and tentatively asked Tristan, "Are there any fortune-telling places around here?"
Tristan looked at him in surprise, "What do you mean? Want to know about your love life?"
"No." Emory leaned in and whispered, "I want to know if my child is a boy or a girl."
The afternoon café was quiet, with Tristan lazily basking in the sun, occasionally glancing at Evie and sending messages to Katniss. He couldn't understand Emory's inner helplessness and pain.
He could only say as an observer, "Dignity is worthless. If you still care about her, don't worry about whether you're marrying into her family or not. Forget about the deception."
"You don't understand my thoughts." Emory tapped the table hard twice, making a dull sound that was particularly clear in the restaurant.
Someone glanced over, and he smiled apologetically, then said to Tristan, "She won't even let me see the child. She says she has no right, but she should at least tell me if it's a boy or a girl, right? Show me a photo? But she gives me nothing, waiting for me to beg her?"
The more Emory spoke, the colder he felt, "I can swallow my pride."
"You wait here for Nicholas. I'm taking Evie to White Corporation to deliver lunch to Katniss." Tristan grabbed the car keys, holding Evie, and walked out without looking back.
Emory cursed a few times, then called Nicholas, "It's almost noon. Hurry up and come over after you're done shopping. Let's have lunch together; I'm starving."
Nicholas was stunned for a few seconds, then said, "I went home. Didn't I tell you I was going to rush back to be with my wife after shopping? If you're hungry, can't you eat by yourself? Why are you looking for me?"
Tristan made a special trip to Katniss's favorite restaurant, bought her favorite food, and took a detour to White Corporation, arriving just before one o'clock.
He had called Katniss in advance, and when he arrived, Katniss and Ryan were waiting downstairs.
Seeing Tristan park the car right at the company's main entrance, he got out of the car with great fanfare, and under everyone's gaze, he took Evie out of the car seat in the back.
Evie, who had just woken up, had slightly red eyes and was squinting with a frown.
But when she saw Katniss clearly, she instantly waved her little arms happily, making sounds that no one could understand.
Katniss quickly took her and pressed her cheek against hers.
Tristan handed the food to Ryan, his eyes never leaving the mother and daughter.
Ryan complained, "Mr. Forbes, if you came any later, Ms. Grey would be waiting for dinner."
She had already eaten, but he insisted on bringing lunch.
Was this really about delivering lunch? Wasn't it just an excuse to bring the child over for a visit?
"Ms. Grey, she looks so beautiful, just like you."
Katniss couldn't help but smile, "Really? As she grows older, it should become clearer who she resembles more."
When Evie occasionally got angry, she looked just like Tristan, making Katniss think she resembled Tristan more.
"Let's go inside." Tristan stood in the wind, shielding the mother and daughter from the breeze, and smoothed Katniss's wind-blown hair.
He wrapped his long arm around Katniss's slender waist, intending to lead her into the company, but Katniss stood still.
"You've delivered the food, now take Evie back. It's work time, everyone is working, what are you doing bringing a child here?"
She glanced at the curious eyes peeking out from the company, leaned towards him, and whispered, "You need to show off with some restraint."
Tristan looked surprised, his lips parting slightly, "You think I'm here to show off Evie?"
Wasn't that the case? Seeing his serious expression, Katniss wondered if she had misunderstood.
"Then I'll take her back." Tristan took Evie from her arms, proudly intending to leave.
Ryan quickly tugged on Katniss's sleeve, "Ms. Grey, it's hard to calm him down when he's angry."
Remembering the last time he was angry, Katniss felt a headache coming on. Even though she thought his current pride and innocence were an act, she had to stop him. "Well, since you're here, why not bring her up? Benjamin is here, and they haven't met Evie yet."
"Not a good idea." Tristan, holding Evie, leaned against the car, glancing at the towering building, "You're all busy working, what am I doing bringing a child here?"
"I make the rules. If I say you can bring her in for a tour, then you can." Katniss snorted lightly.
Only then did Tristan smile with satisfaction, carrying Evie ahead.
Katniss and Ryan followed behind, and Ryan quietly complained, "Ms. Grey, could Mr. Forbes have postpartum depression? Even though he's not the one who gave birth, people say that taking care of a baby can easily cause depression, regardless of gender. Is he going stir-crazy at home?"
So he always wants to go out, not necessarily to show off Evie.
Maybe he needs to interact with people to fend off depression?
"You're overthinking it. Mr. Forbes is mentally strong; if anyone gets depressed, it won't be him." Katniss was just too embarrassed to say that Tristan almost drove her to depression at home.
Tristan only stayed at White Corporation for less than an hour, meeting briefly with Benjamin and Samuel. While Katniss introduced their daughter to them, he handed over some messy tasks from Synergy Global Corporation to Ryan.
Ryan thought to herself, 'You're amazing... leaving Katniss to me, and now Synergy Global Corporation too. Am I a robot?'
Ryan replied, "Yes, Mr. Forbes, rest assured, I will complete the tasks you assigned."
Then, as Katniss had work to do, Tristan left with Evie.
Since it had only been a few days since Tristan announced he was joining the Grey family, everyone was particularly excited to see a business prodigy become a full-time dad.
When he went downstairs, a few reporters had gathered, taking some photos of him holding Evie, though they professionally blurred her face.
But when Eudora saw the news photos, she immediately recognized that the child was the one Aaron had mentioned as Matilda's.
So, Aaron had been helping Katniss deceive her?
Late at night, Aaron came home from his part-time job, entering the house close to eleven o'clock, with many assignments still unfinished.
Changing his shoes and holding two pieces of bread he bought, he saw Eudora sitting on the sofa and paused, intending to go straight upstairs.
"Stop." Eudora stood up and called out to him, "I want to know why you hid the fact that Tristan and Katniss have a daughter from me? Are you out of your mind, helping a bunch of outsiders keep this from me?"
