Chapter 379: Hijacked
But Eudora ultimately lacked experience. The other party agreed verbally, "Alright, but you've taken too long. I'm getting a bit impatient."
"Tomorrow!" Eudora immediately said, "Tomorrow is the Zenith Group's press conference. Tristan and Katniss will both be there..."
After hanging up the phone, the man tossed the phone aside, a sneer appearing on his lips, "I like this woman's temper. Let's see, if things go well, I'll help her out."
In late autumn, it was a rare sunny day. After Katniss and Tristan handed Evie over to Sophia, they went to the Zenith Group.
Before leaving, Katniss specifically instructed, "If Evie gets fussy, just take her for a walk around the neighborhood, don't go out."
She was worried that Ember might come looking for them again.
"Okay," Sophia responded.
After they left, she played with Evie on the crawling mat for a while. Evie could barely sit up with support, but she was still a bit unsteady.
Evie soon got bored of playing. She had been taken out by Tristan recently and had gotten a taste for it, now she was fussing to go out.
Sophia put a light beige jacket on her and then placed her in the stroller and took her out.
Although the roads in this villa area were wide, there was only one park with a natural lake.
Many people brought their children there to play, and they encountered several along the way.
A few ladies who usually greeted Sophia kept their distance today, whispering among themselves.
Words like 'stepmother' and 'disrespectful' reached Sophia's ears.
"She still has the nerve to bring the child out to play?"
"Well, we should ask her where she gets the nerve to leave her daughter and come here."
"I heard her daughter runs an educational institution, but it was Katniss who built it up. She probably isn't very capable. What if she goes bankrupt? She must be trying to get on Katniss's good side now."
Sophia stopped, looking at the figures not far from her, frowning and unable to approach.
Yesterday, when she brought Evie out, these people had already been probing for information.
She had answered very tactfully, afraid of causing trouble for Katniss, so she didn't speak ill of Ember.
Moreover, once certain ideas took root in their minds, they became deeply ingrained.
Explaining would only seem like making excuses, so she simply stopped talking.
But she hadn't expected them to be even more excessive today.
She turned and took Evie in the opposite direction, avoiding the small park.
Evie was still young, as long as she was out playing, she wouldn't fuss. Walking back and forth on the complex's intricate roads was enough.
She pushed Evie around twice, and when they reached the entrance of the complex, a security guard in his fifties or sixties greeted her.
"Ms. Stuart, babysitting for your daughter again? This baby is getting prettier and prettier!"
"Yes, she looks just like my Katniss when she was little." Sophia stopped and replied politely.
Before she could finish speaking, a van suddenly sped into the complex from outside.
The screeching sound of tires echoed in the air, and the security guard quickly walked over, holding up a baton and ordering the driver to stop.
More than a dozen young, strong security guards rushed out of the security room to block the van.
Sophia, frightened, quickly pushed Evie to the side, afraid the out-of-control van would hit them.
But she never expected the van was coming straight for her, knocking down seven or eight security guards. The speed was so fast that some guards were thrown a distance away.
The van narrowly missed Sophia, turned around, and blocked her path.
Realizing something was wrong, Sophia quickly picked up Evie and tried to run, but a nearly 6.5-foot-tall black man got out of the van and grabbed her.
"Give me the child!" The black man grabbed Evie's clothes, his dark hand a stark contrast to Evie's pink outfit.
Sophia turned back and saw three or five more people in the van.
One of them, half out of the van, was holding a gun and firing at the approaching security guards.
The sound of gunfire was incessant. Evie cried, clutching Sophia's clothes tightly, her face turning red from crying.
"You can't take care of her. I'll go with you!"
She couldn't run, but Sophia absolutely couldn't hand the child over to a group of men.
Katniss had entrusted the child to her, and she had to take good care of her!
She could be absent, but the child must not be absent while she was still there!
Seemingly not wanting to waste time, the man in black grabbed Sophia's arm and pushed her into the van.
Inside the van, four or five black men were holding guns, and Sophia was extremely nervous.
If it weren't for Evie in her arms, she might have fainted from the tension.
The van sped out of the complex like an arrow, leaving many security guards lying scattered at the entrance.
There were police at the foot of the mountain, and after being alerted, they set up a roadblock halfway.
Katniss's eyelid suddenly twitched violently, but the press conference was almost over, so she didn't think much of it.
Seeing her state, Tristan answered a few questions related to Zenith Group on her behalf.
As soon as the press conference ended, some reporters still wanted to ask questions, but Tristan shielded Katniss as they left.
In the elevator, he finally let go of Katniss and asked, "What's wrong? You don't look well."
"My eyelid keeps twitching, probably warning me that taking over Zenith Group is a trap." Katniss pressed her eyelid, jokingly.
Tristan smiled slightly, watching the elevator ascend to the top floor.
"Your office was designed by me. The furniture was personally selected by me, all according to your taste."
He held Katniss's hand and walked towards the office. The large floor-to-ceiling windows let in the midday sunlight, making the room bright.
From here, they could see the entire night view of Velvet City.
Before Katniss could take it all in, her phone suddenly rang.
It was her private number, an unfamiliar caller. She glanced at it, and the unease she had just suppressed resurfaced.
"Hello, is this Ms. Grey? This is the security property. A car just broke into the complex, and your mother and daughter were taken by the people in the car..."
Katniss couldn't hear the rest. Her throat tightened, and she quickly looked at Tristan, pointing at the phone but unable to speak.
Tristan quickly took the phone and put it on speaker. The other party briefly repeated the situation.
Katniss was in a daze, her mind filled with thoughts of Evie and Sophia being taken.
This was not a robbery. They had killed so many security guards, showing no regard for human life, and had taken Evie.
Ryan drove, and Tristan had already contacted the police. He then called Emory, asking again, "Why exactly did your ex-wife's brother come here?"
"He..." Emory instinctively wanted to give the same answer as last time, but suddenly realized that Tristan's tone indicated something serious had happened!
"I'm asking you again!" Emory quickly called Nelson, who answered in less than five seconds, "Why did you come to the country? Did you lie to me, you bastard?"
