Chapter 471 Perhaps He Will Bring His Wife Along
Katniss wasn't surprised to hear that Dwayne was looking for her.
She put Evie down and left Tristan's office, spotting Dwayne waiting for her in the hallway.
He waved her over as she stepped out.
She walked briskly towards him, "Mr. Larson, you needed to see me?"
"I heard you're taking care of Mr. Forbes' kid?" Dwayne's tone was flat.
Katniss nodded and followed him into the dimly lit hallway, where she could still make out Dwayne's serious expression.
He seemed concerned.
"Mr. Forbes is someone you might not know well. He loves his kid dearly. If you mess up while taking care of his child, can you handle the consequences? What were you thinking, taking on this responsibility?"
Dwayne clasped his hands together and gave a small clap, "Go and quit immediately."
Katniss replied firmly, "He pays well, way more than my admin job. If I make more money each month, I can help support our household."
"An extra $1,500 a month adds up over a year. I could buy nice things for my grandma and bring her to the city for medical check-ups."
Katniss counted the benefits of looking after Tristan's child on her fingers.
But Dwayne wasn't listening, "You're only seeing the benefits. If the kid gets hurt, it won't just be you in trouble; I'll be dragged down, too!"
"How would that happen?" Katniss asked, puzzled. "No one knows about our relationship. If I mess up, they'll just fire me. I don't need you to protect me."
Dwayne was speechless.
Footsteps echoed from outside. Katniss lowered her voice, "I need to go. Don't bother me with trivial stuff next time. If our relationship gets exposed, it won't be good."
She turned to leave, but Dwayne quickly shut the hallway door. "Wait, are you moving into Mr. Forbes' house tonight?"
Katniss grew impatient, "Yes, I'm not moving into your house. Why do you need to know all the details?"
"A young woman moving into a man's house isn't appropriate. Listen to me and quit this job!" Dwayne found another reason to persuade her.
But she easily countered, "There's nothing inappropriate about it. I heard Mr. Forbes' wife passed away. If I do a good job taking care of his daughter and he takes a liking to me, the Banks family could rise again, right?"
Dwayne's eyes widened in disbelief at Katniss's audacious plan.
"Don't be skeptical. Anything is possible!" Katniss tried to convince him. "I heard Mr. Forbes lives next door to you? You live in such a nice place?"
"No," Dwayne instinctively denied.
But realizing Katniss's determination, he conceded that she would definitely move in tonight.
He decided to say, "It's a company-arranged residence. Also, I'm now handling the project with Mr. Forbes, so it looks like we're equals. But don't reveal our relationship to him."
He laid out the potential dangers and prepared Katniss mentally.
Katniss listened briefly, understanding that she shouldn't acknowledge Dwayne in front of Tristan or question his role.
She suddenly felt that acting was a skill, not easy at all.
After hearing Dwayne's lengthy explanation, she found an opportunity to leave and returned to Tristan's office.
"Mr. Forbes, please keep a safe distance from me in front of Dwayne. We mustn't reveal that he's the head of Banks Far Company, or this charade will fall apart."
She lay on the couch playing with Evie, looking up at Tristan at his desk.
Banks Far Company was planning a major project, uncertain of its success. Tristan's involvement gave Dwayne hope.
Dwayne had hired Tristan for a million dollars a month.
Of course, this was a secret in the business world.
But Tristan earned the money effortlessly, handling files from the project and planning departments, mostly working remotely for Zenith Group and Synergy Global Corporation.
"I've seen people hide their identity, but never someone hiding another's identity so diligently."
Katniss hadn't seen it either. She caught the teasing tone in Tristan's voice and smirked, "Once I find out if Elara lives with Dwayne, the timing will be right. It won't take long."
"Since he knows you're moving in, he'll be cautious. Even if they live together, they'll handle it by this afternoon," Tristan analyzed from Dwayne's perspective, easily predicting his actions.
Katniss could guess this too, feeling a bit frustrated, "I refuse to believe I can't find any clues."
At three o'clock, Tristan took Katniss to pack her things, supposedly to move in.
But they actually went home.
When they arrived, Katniss saw Elara with a suitcase, leaving the villa on the right and heading into the neighborhood.
She looked unhappy, talking on the phone, unaware of their car.
They parked at the villa entrance and watched Elara enter a villa diagonally across.
Katniss glanced left, seeing Atticus's villa.
The right was Dwayne's.
Diagonally was Elara's.
"Have you met Atticus's wife?" she asked Tristan quietly, holding Evie as they entered the villa.
Tristan opened the door, letting them in first, his warm hand on her thin back, "I barely see my own wife, let alone someone else's."
Katniss chuckled, turning serious, "I'm serious. They say Atticus got married a few months ago, and his wife had a baby shortly after."
"Really?" Tristan frowned, "I hadn't heard."
Atticus wasn't a prominent figure; his wedding was rushed and low-key, not widely reported.
So it hadn't spread, only within the company, which was understandable.
Katniss seemed to remember something. She stepped out to look around. "Yesterday I saw a woman with shopping bags, she looked like Hazel, heading to Atticus's house."
Could that be Atticus's wife?
"Atticus is coming for dinner tonight. If he's really married, he might bring his wife."
