Chapter 468 Someone Is Following You
After trailing for two blocks, Katniss got a call from Tristan.
She quickly answered, "I haven't left work yet, the company has..."
"Someone's following you," Tristan cut in, his voice calm.
Katniss froze and glanced at the rearview mirror. Sure enough, a black car was slowly tailing her.
She had joined Banks Far Company, and it was no surprise that Dwayne would have someone follow her. He probably wished he could put a camera on her.
"Where are you?" she asked with a wry smile, her lie already exposed.
"I'm in front of you," Tristan replied, sounding annoyed.
"What?" Katniss looked ahead and realized Tristan meant he was in front of Dwayne and Elara's car.
"Dwayne invited me to dinner," Tristan explained succinctly.
So she had been following Tristan all along.
Dwayne and Elara weren't going home either?
"Why are you so chummy with Dwayne?" she whispered, "Won't it be awkward when your identity is revealed?"
Tristan replied indifferently, "I think he'll be more embarrassed than I will."
Evie's voice kept coming through the phone, and Katniss pinched the bridge of her nose, asking, "Then go have dinner with them and find out about their relationship for me. I'll head home."
Might as well use the free labor and save herself the trouble.
"Dwayne introduced Elara as the director of Banks Far Company," Tristan's attractive voice came through again, "He won't reveal Elara's true identity."
True enough. But they wouldn't do anything inappropriate in public, so it would be hard to find solid evidence of their unusual relationship.
"Why are you having dinner with them? Business?" Katniss asked, driving slowly and planning to turn around.
"No," Tristan explained, "Even though the Banks family has some influence in Northern Grassland City, Banks Far Company is bound to fall apart eventually. To avoid unnecessary losses, I don't plan to collaborate. Maybe I'll step in if you need help in the future."
Katniss acknowledged with a sound.
He continued, "Dwayne quickly found out I was here. We've met twice in business before, and he contacted me as a local host. I used the excuse of needing a nanny to keep in touch."
"A nanny?" Katniss was surprised, "You need a nanny for Evie?"
"I just wanted an excuse to stay in touch with him and keep tabs on you," Tristan reminded her, "But I didn't expect him to suggest Elara as the nanny to help with the child."
Katniss was speechless.
Elara looked like a teenager. Apart from her title as company director, proving she was an adult, she didn't seem capable of taking care of a child.
"So tonight, he's inviting you to dinner to discuss Elara being the nanny?"
Tristan confirmed, but Katniss was puzzled.
Was Dwayne really willing to push Elara towards Tristan? Tristan was quite impressive, and now there were rumors that she was gone, meaning Tristan was a single man.
Wasn't he afraid Elara might fall for Tristan?
Or did he not care, as long as Elara could win Tristan over for future collaboration?
"Good luck," she said, hanging up the phone.
Elara's outfit was enough to make her cringe.
Katniss turned her car around, found an opportunity to shake off the tailing car, and headed home.
She lived in a place that wasn't suitable for Dwayne and his people to know about, lest they question her 'poverty.'
But she didn't expect Tristan to return just twenty minutes later.
"Aren't you supposed to be having dinner with them?" She had just showered, wearing a face mask, her curvy figure barely visible under her nightgown.
Tristan took off Evie's shoes and placed them on the floor. Evie immediately ran towards Katniss, arms raised.
Her little feet pattered on the ground, accompanied by her joyful laughter. Katniss quickly walked over and picked her up.
Evie then pulled off her face mask and kissed her cheek.
After tasting the mask's essence, Evie paused, then quickly wiped her mouth with her hand.
She poked Katniss's face, her eyes wide.
"Face mask," Katniss explained to her.
Tristan changed into slippers and said, "He mentioned Elara taking care of Evie, and I refused, so I didn't even stay for dinner."
Earlier at the company, Dwayne had subtly mentioned that Elara liked Evie.
Tonight at dinner, he had directly brought it up.
Tristan's immediate refusal wasn't absolute. He had said, "Your company has many people. See if you can assign someone to help."
"You should have just told him you wanted me to be Evie's nanny," Katniss suggested, "Then I could stay home with the child, and you could handle Dwayne's affairs."
Tristan replied confidently, "That's not appropriate. You need to handle your own matters."
Katniss was speechless.
"Dwayne is developing a project and wants me to be the planner. Whether it succeeds or fails doesn't concern me; it's a gamble on the company's vision. I agreed, and he promised to help find a nanny for Evie. I mentioned..." Tristan lowered his head, whispering in her ear, "I haven't found a suitable place to live here. He said the house next to his is for rent, and I've asked him to negotiate."
So, whoever became the nanny would have to move next to Dwayne's house with Tristan.
Katniss immediately stood on tiptoe and kissed his cheek, her warm lips bringing a different sensation to his tense face.
"Mr. Forbes, do you think I'm suitable to be your nanny?"
Tristan pressed his tongue against his cheek, unable to suppress the smile at the corner of his lips, "If you do, it's high pay, but you'll have to do one more thing."
"Don't worry, even ten things would be fine," Katniss agreed readily.
But when Tristan mentioned that thing, her face turned grim.
The next day, they separated at Banks Far Company, only to meet again in the elevator ten minutes later.
Unfortunately, Elara was there, too.
Tristan held Evie in the back, and Evie leaned forward, trying to grab Katniss's hair, whispering something to her.
Elara couldn't help but glance at Katniss, raising her hand to move Evie's arm and get closer to her.
But Evie quickly pulled her hand back, accidentally wrapping Katniss's hair around her fingers, causing Katniss to fall into Tristan's arms.
Tristan quickly freed a hand to hold her waist.
Meanwhile, Evie continued to show her dislike for Elara, waving her hand and scolding her.
