Chapter 440 It's Time to Return to Normal Life
This is simply torturing Katniss.
He was lying on the bed right next to her; she could touch him, and when she leaned over him, she could hear his heartbeat.
She could even hear his steady breathing, but he just wouldn't wake up.
At this moment, she couldn't hold back any longer. She covered her face with her hands, tears falling through her fingers, and her shoulders shaking violently.
"Katniss..." Saskia felt a pang in her heart seeing her like this.
Immediately, Saskia reached out to hold her, trying to offer her a supportive embrace.
But Katniss quickly pulled away from her embrace, her voice heavy with emotion, her eyes misty, "Saskia, give me a few minutes alone."
Seeing her like this, Saskia was worried but still stood up, "I'll be waiting outside. If you need anything, just call me."
Katniss responded with a frown, turning her gaze to the pitch-black outside the window, as if there were clawing hands reaching out to her from the darkness, making it hard for her to breathe, leaving her without hope.
When she said a few minutes, she really meant just a few minutes to vent.
When she walked out of the room, Saskia heard the footsteps and immediately stood up from the bench.
The next second, the stubborn and independent Katniss appeared in front of Saskia.
By then, Katniss had tidied up her appearance, her long hair tied back, looking no longer fragile.
Except for the redness around her eyes and the bandaged wound on her forehead.
"These are the medications prescribed by the doctor." Saskia handed the medicine that Emory had just given her to Katniss.
Katniss took it and nodded slightly, "I'm going to see him."
Everyone knew that Katniss was going to see Tristan.
The three of them exchanged glances and followed her.
When they returned to the ward, Katniss stood by Tristan's bed for a while, then looked up at them.
"Whether he can hear me or not, I want to make plans for the future in front of him. We don't need to stay here all the time. I'll find a caregiver to take care of him, and you can come by when you're not busy. I won't be coming every day either."
Her life used to revolve around Tristan, but now there was also Evie.
And they all had their own things to do; they couldn't stay in the hospital forever.
No one knew how much effort and inner struggle it took for her to make this decision in those few minutes.
Emory turned his head away, his gaze lingering on Tristan's chiseled features, his brows tightly furrowed, almost unable to hold back his emotions for the first time since adulthood.
But if they all couldn't hold it together, what would Katniss do?
So Saskia stood behind Nicholas, silently shedding tears.
"You're doing the right thing. If he could hear you now, he would be very relieved." Nicholas tried to lighten the mood, "When he crashed, we didn't even hope he would come back alive. Now, this is better than the worst-case scenario."
"Yes." Katniss forced a smile, took a deep breath, and sat down beside him, noticing his cold hand and warming it up, "Tristan, did you hear what I just said? From today on, we all need to go back to work."
"Don't worry, we're not abandoning you. We'll come to see you when we're not busy."
Emory wiped his face and said without hesitation, "In his condition, no news is the best news. We'll discuss it and take turns watching over him every day."
Nicholas immediately agreed, "I think that's a good idea. We'll each take a day. If one day isn't enough, then two days. If two days aren't enough..."
Before Nicholas could finish, Katniss interrupted him, "What if it's a year, two years, or a lifetime?"
Her words and her expression seemed so cold, even a bit ungrateful.
But they all knew that Katniss was thinking of them, considering the worst-case scenario.
One day, two days, or even a few months, they could indeed spare the time, but so many days had already passed, and Tristan still hadn't woken up.
In the long run, no one had that much time. Everyone had their own lives, and they couldn't spend all their time on Tristan!
So, she made this decision.
And most importantly, if she couldn't move on, Emory and Nicholas wouldn't be able to return to their normal lives.
Regardless of the outcome, their lives had to continue.
Katniss took a deep breath and continued, "Don't worry, the caregiver is very responsible, and I'll come by often. When he wakes up, I'll notify you immediately."
As she said this, she forced a smile.
She was trying to show them that she had come to terms with it and was in a good state.
But the more she did this, the sadder they felt.
However, they could only follow Katniss's plan.
"Katniss, let us know if you need anything. There are some things we can't help with, but we can still do what we can." Nicholas reminded her, still worried.
Katniss nodded, pursed her lips, and after a moment, thought of Lucas.
So she said, "Help me find Lucas. Although the antidote is real, Tristan's condition makes me think he knows something."
When she mentioned Lucas, her expression was particularly serious, even with a hint of coldness in her eyes.
If there was anything, she wouldn't let Lucas off!
Emory agreed immediately, "Don't worry, leave it to me. I'll find Lucas!"
That bastard, giving an antidote with such a reaction. If Katniss hadn't mentioned him, he would have forgotten about that bastard!
"Then I won't keep you. We'll have a meal together another day. I'll stay with him for a while." Katniss nodded to them, then turned her gaze to Tristan.
Everyone knew she wanted to be alone with Tristan, so they left as she wished.
After leaving the ward, Emory immediately took out his phone and dialed a number.
Emory spoke into the phone, "I don't care what it takes, even if you have to dig three feet into the ground, find Lucas for me!"
His voice was filled with anger.
Nicholas also understood the importance of Lucas to Tristan, but he only sent a text message.
But within a minute, there was a reply.
Now, everyone was searching for Lucas!
Katniss wiped Tristan's body, changed him into clean hospital clothes, and trimmed his nails.
