Chapter 437 You don't want me to go?
Ember was stunned, looking at the angry Rupert, "How do you know?"
Jessica was also confused, her eyes wide as she looked at Rupert and Ember, "What do you mean?"
"Just what it sounds like, Katniss is not my mom's biological daughter." Rupert glanced back at Ember and explained, "When I was in middle school, my dad came to see me. He said I was his only son, and Katniss was adopted. He tried to persuade me to go back with him, but I refused."
But Ember was very formidable, and Ryder didn't dare to come back after the first attempt.
Rupert didn't want to complicate things, so he kept this secret to himself.
He remembers that during the time his parents were going through a divorce, he often saw Katniss hiding away and crying.
But he wasn't quite sure what it was like to interact with Katniss when they were younger.
Later, when Ember asked him to seek refuge with Katniss, he didn't want to go, but he mustered the courage for the sake of living.
He knew Katniss didn't know they weren't biological siblings, so he was embarrassed to take too much advantage of her.
He genuinely felt that Katniss had it tough and didn't want to cause her more trouble.
Eventually, he truly started treating Katniss as his sister.
If it weren't for Jessica's unreasonable behavior today, he wouldn't have mentioned this.
"Also, the money I used to open the pasta restaurant was given by Katniss. How much money is in this card? It's not enough to repay her. I must return this money to her. Jessica, if you want to continue living with me, don't stop me from repaying her. If you insist on stopping me, then let's get a divorce!"
With that, he walked to the bed, took the card from under the pillow, and turned to leave.
Jessica wanted to chase after him, but she couldn't lift her feet.
Chase him, grab the card back, and the days would be over? Divorce, she could only get half the money in the card, and with a child!
But not chasing... so much money! Gone?
"Jessica, calm down." Ember knew they couldn't rely on Katniss anymore and had to coax Jessica, "Rupert is a man of deep feelings and loyalty. This is good for you, too. Besides, we haven't gone too far with Katniss yet. In the future, when you have a child or if we face any difficulties, she won't refuse to help out of respect for Rupert."
Jessica belatedly realized that Ember had probably been exposed as not being Katniss's biological mother that day when she came back looking guilty.
She used to hope that Ember's relationship with Katniss would bring in more money, but now it seemed Ember was useless compared to Rupert.
"Do I need you to tell me? Move aside!"
She pushed Ember out of the room and slammed the door shut.
Their visit didn't have much impact on Katniss.
But it made Tristan keenly aware of something.
While Sophia went upstairs to check on Evie, he followed Katniss into the kitchen.
"Are you hiding something from me?"
Her slender waist was faintly visible, her long hair cascading down her back. She continued preparing breakfast without turning her head, "Mr. Forbes, you're really smart. Why don't you guess what I'm hiding from you?"
She made a few boiled eggs, turned on the stove, leaned against the counter, and looked back at him.
He leaned against the kitchen cabinet, his elbow resting on the edge, his long, clean fingers naturally hanging down.
His deep eyes narrowed slightly, and after a few seconds, his thin lips parted, "Mrs. Forbes, you're hard to read now. I admit defeat."
Katniss was amused by him. She walked over to him, hugged his strong waist, and said, "I'm not Ember's biological daughter. She has no relation to me."
This was something Tristan had never considered. He pursed his thin lips and frowned at her, wanting to say something but hesitating.
But she knew what he wanted to say, "Although this isn't a good thing, it's not a bad thing for me either. At least it can prevent Ember from always exploiting me under the guise of being my biological mother."
Although Ember didn't gain much from Katniss, she still caused her a lot of trouble."Don't you plan to make this clear?" Tristan asked, one hand on her waist, looking down at her.
Katniss shook her head, "Let's not talk about it. Whether Rupert and I are related by blood or not, our relationship is very good. Let's not hurt everyone's feelings."
After a long time, Tristan sighed softly, lowered his head, and kissed her forehead, "You still have Evie and me."
He placed himself after Evie.
Katniss's heart sank, and she forced a smile, "Yes, I still have you both."
The sudden ringing of the phone interrupted their quiet conversation.
Tristan let go of her waist, took out his phone, and answered the call. It was Emory.
"The drug test results are out. It is indeed the antidote, but there is an ingredient that experts cannot identify. We don't know if it will cause any side effects!"
After saying this, Emory cursed, feeling like Lucas had played him for a fool!
The kitchen was very quiet, and Katniss heard his words. Her eyes lit up, but after a few seconds, they dimmed again. She frowned and looked at Tristan.
"Have the experts ready to give me a full-body checkup. If the situation allows, inject the antidote as soon as possible."
Tristan made the decision almost without thinking.
His wrist sank as Katniss grabbed his sleeve.
His clear veins showed as he held her wrist. After giving instructions to Emory, he hung up the phone, his voice hoarse, "We can't delay any longer. I can't wait."
He couldn't stand seeing her sleepless nights, unable to give her promises and a future.
"Then I'll go with you." Katniss didn't dare to look up at him.
Her lowered eyes couldn't hide her panicked emotions.
"The night before our wedding, Lucas contacted me, saying that if I didn't marry you, he would give me the antidote. But I refused. He really did lie to me."
In her heart, nothing was more important than getting married.
"Don't pay attention to him." Tristan couldn't figure out what Lucas was trying to do, "I'll go to Emory's. You have breakfast first. Don't wait for me."
Katniss nodded.
They finished breakfast, but Tristan didn't come back.
She called, and Emory answered, saying Tristan was undergoing a full-body checkup.
If the checkup showed no problems, they could inject the antidote directly.
"He said if you called, I should tell you the truth. If you want to come to the hospital, I'll send you the location. If you didn't call, he might secretly inject the antidote and then come back."
Tristan didn't want her to go.
Katniss felt down, but after a long time, she couldn't help but ask for the hospital's address.
Emory sent it to her and mentioned that the checkup results would be out by 3 PM.
She didn't go directly. She first sent a message to Tristan, asking, [You don't want me to go?]
After a while, Tristan replied, [If you don't cry, I'll let you come.]
She hesitated, her emotions swinging between heaven and hell. She couldn't guarantee she wouldn't lose control.
Katniss didn't have much time to think. She couldn't eat lunch. After Sophia put Evie to sleep, she finally went to the hospital.
