Chapter 420 Are You Worthy of Being a Sister?

Katniss saw that Ember was persistent, as if she wouldn't give up until the matter was settled today.

She simply said, "I don't expect to cut ties with you. After all, with Rupert around, I don't want to put him in a difficult position."

"Don't overestimate your relationship with Rupert!" Ember rolled her eyes. "Are you that rich? Rupert still can't afford a house in Velvet City. Do you think you're fit to be his sister?"

"So you do know I'm just his sister?" Katniss retorted sarcastically.

Ember was at a loss for words. Seeing someone coming out of the community, she started to say, "Fine, if you don't satisfy me today, I'll die right here. I don't believe everyone will agree with you, a rich daughter, only giving your biological mother two thousand dollars!"

A few years ago, that lawyer's letter had indeed suppressed Ember. If she caused more trouble, she would go to jail.

But in reality, the incident caused quite a stir. Some netizens didn't understand Ember's insatiable desires and criticized Katniss, who was then the owner of an educational institution, for being too harsh.

Now that her net worth had skyrocketed, causing another scene would definitely attract more attention.

It would have some impact.

Ember had grasped this point, which was why she dared to make such a fuss. "Just one villa, it's easy for you. You're so generous to those staff members, why can't you be the same to me?"

"Watch your words," Katniss's eyes turned cold. "I'm not afraid of trouble. If you want to make a scene, I'll play along!"

"Katniss, you rebellious daughter!" Ember shouted loudly. "I'm your biological mother. Treating your mother like this will bring you misfortune."

Several wealthy women walking in the community turned to look. Seeing that it was Katniss and her group, they immediately walked over to watch the commotion.

Seeing this, Katniss turned to call the security.

Sophia, standing nearby, frowned in anger. As Katniss walked away and the wealthy women hadn't yet arrived, she quickly pulled Ember to a corner.

Caught off guard, Ember was dragged to the corner. Realizing what happened, she pushed Sophia back. "What are you doing? You, mistress, you stole my husband and now my daughter, you..."

"Ember, have some shame! Katniss gives you two thousand dollars in alimony... you should feel guilty taking it! If you dare to make a scene again, you won't even get that two thousand dollars!" Sophia said angrily in a low voice.

"You..." Ember was stunned, her arrogance slightly subdued. "What do you know?"

"I know everything I need to know." Seeing Ember calm down, Sophia sighed in relief but remained stern. "Don't think that just because Mr. Grey is dead, that matter will remain a secret forever. If you keep leeching off Katniss like a vampire, I will tell her the truth!"

With that, she snorted and walked quickly into the community.

Passing by the wealthy women, she ignored their scrutinizing gazes and walked briskly towards Katniss, who was coming out of the security booth.

The security guards were already coming out to evict Ember. The wealthy women didn't even have a chance to talk to Ember.

To Katniss's surprise, Ember didn't resist, just left unhappily.

"Mom, what did you say to her?" Katniss asked, seeing Sophia talking to Ember from the security booth.

Sophia took a shopping bag from her and said, "We're the same age. My advice works better than your warnings. See, she's really gone now, isn't she?"

Katniss half-doubted, "Is she the type to listen to advice?"

She was sure Rupert had tried to advise Ember privately many times.

Sophia said without hesitation, "I have my ways of persuading her. Don't worry about it, let's go back. Matilda is still waiting."

The two quickened their pace and went back to busy themselves with cooking.

No matter what, the Russell family matter was settled. George didn't follow his mother's last words and married another woman.

Sophia's opinion of him improved slightly, not as much as before.

The meal was harmonious, and the atmosphere was good.

But Katniss felt a deep sense of regret.

She looked at Evie, sitting at the table with wide eyes, grabbing food with her hands.

Evie smiled, showing her four little teeth, and reached out to offer the food to Katniss.

"Mommy doesn't want it." She smiled and remembered the day at the hospital when Evie, with greasy hands, tried to feed Tristan.

Tristan ate it without minding the dirt. She minded, but he didn't.

She wiped Evie's greasy hands with a wet wipe, feeling increasingly heavy-hearted.

Seeing this, Matilda whispered, "Which hospital is Tristan in? George and I can visit when we have time."

"When you have time, I'll take you there." Katniss wiped Evie's hands clean and smiled at them. "For now, there's no major issue."

George quickly put down his utensils and said, "I know some doctors at the hospital. What's wrong with Tristan? Do you need me to find someone to help?"

Katniss shook her head. "No need, he has doctors, all professionals."

"That's good. How long will Tristan stay in the hospital?" Matilda asked cautiously.

For a while, Katniss didn't answer.

Whether he could be discharged was unknown.

"Let's not talk about this." Sophia gave Katniss some food and changed the subject. "Visiting the hospital takes a morning. You two plan ahead and take me along."

Matilda quickly agreed, "Okay."

In the afternoon, Katniss took Evie upstairs for a nap, but Evie was too excited, crawling around the bed for a while, and somehow found a black button.

It was from Tristan's shirt, found in some corner.

She waved it around, then placed it on Katniss's face.

The cold feeling made Katniss's eyes tremble. She picked up the button and examined it for a long time.

"Mom!" Evie shouted, her little finger tracing the tear that fell from Katniss's eye.

The tear didn't fall on the pillow; it was wiped away by Evie's finger.

Katniss sat up, holding the button in her palm, and hugged Evie, saying, "Daddy, this button belongs to Daddy."

Evie wasn't interested in the button anymore. She looked up at Katniss, her pupils reflecting Katniss's red eyes.

Katniss kissed her forehead and said, "Learn to call Daddy soon. Daddy will be very happy, and he will come back."

"Mom." Evie kept making the sound 'Mommy.'

But it was just a sound, not truly calling her.

Katniss calculated the time, thinking it would take at least two more months. She wondered if Tristan could hear by then.

She pursed her lips, and the sudden ringing of her phone pulled her out of her deep thoughts. It was Emory calling.
