Chapter 323 I Haven't Told Him Yet that Evie Is His Daughter
Adelaide stood with a cane, smiling at everyone. She had the demeanor of an elder but was still kind.
Everyone nodded in response.
Only Katniss looked at Adelaide with a complicated expression. Was it because her conversation with Tristan yesterday was too unpleasant, so she came to find her again?
"Mrs. Forbes, you came at the right time. We were just about to eat. Would you like to join us?" Benjamin stepped forward to invite Adelaide to join them for a meal, trying to help Katniss out of the situation.
Adelaide shook her head with a smile and said, "You all go ahead and celebrate. I don't want to spoil the fun. I'm here to see Katniss. Besides, it's not appropriate for her to dine with a group of men. I'll have a meal with her alone."
Samuel turned to look at Katniss.
Katniss looked at Adelaide indifferently and said, "There's nothing inappropriate about it. We're all colleagues, and I'm the main character of this celebration today. I have to go. If you have something to say, either say it here or later."
"It's not appropriate to say it here, and later will be too late." Adelaide was a bit unhappy. Katniss didn't give her any face and refused her in public.
But who cared if she was unhappy?
After all, she didn't care if Katniss was unhappy.
"If it's not appropriate, then don't say it. If it's too late, then forget it. It's getting late, and the midday sun is strong. Don't get sunstroke, or it will be our fault." Katniss turned slightly and said to Royce behind Adelaide, "Royce, take Mrs. Forbes back. If something happens, you won't be able to bear the responsibility."
After saying that, she gave everyone a look, and they all walked past Adelaide and left.
This was the first time she had refused Adelaide.
Adelaide's face turned extremely ugly, and after a while, she turned and got back into the car. "If she doesn't go, so be it. I have a way to make her understand."
Katniss was halfway through her meal when she received a photo from Adelaide.
It was a scene of Tristan and Lila having a meal at a restaurant, showing Lila's face full of infatuation.
Only Tristan's back was captured, but she recognized him immediately because she was too familiar with him.
Adelaide: [Even if he loves you, he knows to consider the current situation and find a suitable business marriage partner. He is ultimately clear-headed and knows who can help him!]
The text from Adelaide was full of "I'm trying to sow discord" vibes.
She sneered. Adelaide probably had no other way to deal with Tristan, so she resorted to such childish tactics.
Should she reply? It felt like a waste of words, but she couldn't let Adelaide's insult to her intelligence slide.
Katniss: [Did you forget why you wanted me to stay away from Tristan?]
With one sentence, Adelaide didn't reply anymore.
She knew that getting involved in the White family disputes could bring trouble to Tristan.
So even if Tristan were to marry, he wouldn't choose someone from the White family!
After the meal, a few executives went back to the company for a meeting, and Benjamin went straight back to the White family.
Katniss and Samuel booked afternoon tea at a café around the corner from White Corporation and asked them to deliver it to White Corporation at three o'clock.
At this time, Tristan was still talking with Lila.
"Mr. Forbes, if you don't agree to my terms, I can't give you the item." Lila's USB drive was shaped like a ring, and she kept playing with it in front of Tristan.
Tristan showed his impatience. "If you don't state your terms, how can I agree?"
"Anyway, it's not about marrying me." Lila smiled at him, seeing his impatience, and after thinking for a moment, she said, "I hope you can resolve the internal conflict of the White family."
"Wishful thinking," Tristan said coldly.
Lila didn't mind his words. "My dad and mom are starting to fight back. The first thing they want to do is deal with Katniss. You resolving the White family conflict is actually you protecting Katniss and dealing with my dad and mom."
She kept saying "my dad and mom," but every word was about dealing with them.
After saying that, she took off the ring and handed it to Tristan. "This is a recording. I heard them planning to harm Katniss, but I don't know the specifics."
Tristan glanced at the ring she took off, his thin lips tightly pressed, and his face tense. After a moment, he abruptly got up and walked out.
Since Lila was willing to hand over the item, it must be true.
Lila watched his quickly departing figure and leisurely started eating.
Asking him to resolve the White family conflict was to prevent him from getting angry and bankrupting the White family.
Otherwise, she wouldn't be the White family lady anymore.
But she knew she didn't have the ability to control Tristan, so she didn't dare to push the matter further.
Anyway, as long as Tristan held a grudge against her parents, her goal was achieved.
It was noon, and there weren't many cars on the road. The low-key and luxurious Land Rover weaved through the traffic. He called Katniss several times, but no one answered.
The polished leather shoes pressed harder on the gas pedal, and the veiny hand kept honking the horn.
After speeding for ten minutes, he arrived at the entrance of White Corporation. Before he could park, he saw Katniss's car coming out of the underground parking lot from a distance.
An SUV parked by the roadside quickly started and followed, tailing Katniss's car.
They headed in the opposite direction of Tristan's car, and by the time Tristan turned around, they had already gained some distance.
He quickly called Katniss again and again.
The phone's ringtone kept ringing in the car. Katniss glanced at the bag on the passenger seat, frowning and unable to answer.
Ten minutes ago, she received a call from Emory saying that Evie had suddenly developed a fever.
He had already driven Sophia and Evie to the hospital.
This was the first time Evie had been sick since she was born, and Katniss was anxious, unable to answer the phone.
The bag's zipper was open, and she could see that it was Tristan calling, but the continuous calls made her feel something was wrong.
She could only try to grab the phone from the bag while driving, but suddenly saw an SUV speeding up from the left rear, getting dangerously close to her car.
Ahead was a bridge over the sea, and the SUV seemed intent on forcing her off the bridge to perish together!
Her outstretched hand quickly retracted, and she slammed on the brakes, but the other car also slowed down!
It was clearly premeditated!
She alternated between braking and accelerating, causing the cars behind to brake suddenly and resulting in a rear-end collision. For a moment, there were no cars behind her and the SUV!
The SUV driver revved the engine loudly, once again closing in on her, ramming into her car's front. Her fingers turned white from gripping the steering wheel, and the car almost lost control!
Panic set in, and Evie's image flashed in her mind. Her throat tightened, making it hard to speak or even make a sound.
The phone's ringtone in the car also stopped!
She didn't dare to stop. If she did, the SUV would crash into her, flipping her car off the bridge!
Not stopping meant gambling, seeking a slim chance of survival on the bridge.
But clearly, the SUV driver had no intention of letting her live. After creating some distance, the SUV almost horizontally sped towards her.
She couldn't dodge!
Katniss stared intently at the SUV speeding towards her, her heart sinking, her eyes gradually dimming.
Suddenly, a low-key Land Rover rushed up, crashing into the SUV that was about to hit her, sending it flying.
The collision was so strong that the SUV flipped over and flew far down the road. The Land Rover's front was instantly a mess, with parts scattered everywhere.
It finally stopped against a bridge pillar, emitting a puff of black smoke.
Katniss slammed on the brakes, the screeching sound piercing the sky, leaving a long black mark on the ground.
She quickly rushed out, running madly towards Tristan. Before she could get close, she saw the car door open, and Tristan's foot hit the ground, but he collapsed before the other foot could come out.
He lay on the ground, blood seeping from his forehead, covering half his face but not his eyes.
In his gaze, Katniss, unharmed, ran towards him, kneeling beside him but not daring to touch him, tears streaming down.
"Tristan, how are you? Don't sleep, wake up, look at me."
She knelt beside him, ensuring she was within his line of sight, seeing his eyes move slightly, still conscious.
"Call an ambulance, please, call an ambulance!"
She looked up, unable to control her emotions, shouting to the onlookers, her voice trembling to the point of breaking.
Because of the rear-end accident behind, an ambulance had already been called, so within five or six minutes, it arrived.
Half an hour later, outside the emergency room
Katniss sat on the floor in a corner, her mind in chaos, not even knowing how she got to the hospital.
She only remembered Tristan's hand being very cold, even though it was early autumn and the outside temperature was 68 degrees Fahrenheit.
It was still warm enough to sweat at noon.
She was sweating too, cold sweat all over.
She couldn't even think about Evie. Emory somehow found out about Tristan's accident and ran from the pediatric department to the emergency room.
Seeing Katniss sitting on the floor, disheveled, her eyes red and swollen from crying, he was stunned.
He remembered her as smart, wise, strong, and resilient when she was pregnant.
But now, she was different.
"I've already spoken to the paramedics. He has a head wound, which is why there's so much blood. They didn't find any critical injuries in the ambulance. The concussion from the impact might have caused his unconsciousness. Don't worry, he'll be fine!"
As soon as he finished, Katniss suddenly moved, grabbing his arm, saying, "I haven't had a chance to tell him that Evie is his daughter. I should have told him just now, but I forgot. I don't even know what I said earlier."
Emory moved his mouth, looking at her tearful eyes, not knowing how to comfort her.
"When he drove to crash the SUV away, it was so fast, I didn't even react. If I had blocked his car, he wouldn't have hit the pillar," she said.
Katniss spoke again, filled with regret, "If I hadn't been in a hurry to get to the hospital and missed his calls, maybe this wouldn't have happened. He wouldn't have had to save me..."
"Katniss!" Adelaide's voice was filled with anger, even hatred, mixed with hurried footsteps coming from the end of the hallway.
