Chapter 472 She Must Drive Katniss Away
"What's up?" Tristan turned around, giving her a sidelong glance. "You got a thing for Atticus's wife now?"
She seemed to be interested in a lot of people.
The one she should be most interested in was standing right in front of her, yet he was being completely ignored.
Katniss changed her shoes and carried Evie straight inside, continuing to ignore him. "Of course. If I can befriend Atticus's wife, wouldn't it be easier to uncover the secrets between Atticus and Dwayne?"
"You should be more concerned about me," Tristan's chilling voice came from behind her.
She paused, shivering along with Evie in her arms, and turned to look back.
Tristan walked over with his hands in his pockets, his demeanor lazy and cold. "Worry about how long I can put up with this kind of life."
"This kind of life?" Katniss frowned, seriously discussing with him. "What's wrong with our current life?"
She felt quite justified.
Because they couldn't act too familiar during the day, but once they were in this room with the door closed at night, she felt...
She was just short of running around naked in front of Tristan to show how familiar they were!
"Do you think I want this every night?" Tristan's expression darkened. Seeing her put Evie down, he strode over, wrapped his arm around her slender waist, and pulled her against his chest. "Whose wife is only for nighttime use? I want a life where we're together day and night!"
His eyes were extremely serious, and for a moment, Katniss felt like she had wronged him.
In her mind, Tristan's refined daytime image couldn't compete with his wild nighttime persona!
"I'll resolve it as soon as possible," she said softly, as if making a promise to Tristan.
Tristan snorted lightly and gestured for her to go upstairs. "Change your clothes. Ryan will bring dinner soon, and Dwayne and Atticus should be here in about half an hour."
She hadn't worn business attire in a while, and wearing it to work at Banks Far Company recently made her feel restricted and uncomfortable.
She went upstairs, took a shower, dried her hair, and changed into some casual clothes before coming back down.
Ryan had already brought a table full of food from a five-star restaurant. Seeing her come down, he greeted her immediately. "Mrs. Grey."
He switched between 'Ms. Grey' and 'Mrs. Grey' effortlessly. Since Katniss hadn't been going to the company recently, he had changed his address.
"You should still call me Ms. Grey. When the guests arrive, you can call me Katniss."
Ryan nodded. "Alright, Ms. Grey."
He had his men set up the dinner, then sent them away, staying behind to help entertain the guests.
After all, even though Katniss was living here under the guise of a 'nanny,' it wouldn't do to have no one assisting during dinner.
About ten minutes later, Dwayne arrived with Atticus and Elara.
They came bearing gifts.
After some small talk, everyone sat down at the table. Katniss, holding Evie, was about to sit next to Tristan when Elara pulled her aside.
"Put the child down. I'll take care of her."
This not only prevented Katniss from sitting next to Tristan but also denied her a place at the table.
"You, come sit here," Tristan said, pulling out a chair and giving Katniss a look.
Elara frowned and objected, "Did you get the tableware? If something's missing, someone needs to help. Why should a nanny sit at the table?"
"Ms. West, please have a seat. The tableware is all set. If anything's missing, I'll handle it," Ryan interjected to ease the tension.
Before Elara could say more, Katniss had already sat down next to Tristan, who had pulled out the chair for her.
Evie refused to sit in the high chair, so Katniss had to hold her.
Elara sat next to her, secretly observing Katniss, who seemed very adept at taking care of the child.
Elara had planned to use Evie to get Katniss fired by making Tristan dissatisfied with her.
Seeing how skilled Katniss was, she had to abandon that plan and think of another way.
Dwayne, feeling uneasy, relaxed a bit when Katniss didn't reveal their connection and Tristan didn't mention anything about Banks Far Company.
Then Tristan suddenly said, "I heard Mr. Banks got married?"
Atticus, who had been quiet, nodded. "Yes, it's been two or three months."
"Why didn't your wife come?" Tristan asked, extending an invitation. "I heard you're a father now. You should bring your wife and child over sometime."
Atticus put down his utensils, looking both flattered and polite. "Thank you, Mr. Forbes. My son is very young, only two or three months old. The weather is too cold for him to go out, so my wife is at home taking care of him."
Not getting any useful information, Katniss's initial excitement faded.
She put the now full Evie down to play and started eating herself.
But she suddenly felt the atmosphere change. Looking up, she saw Dwayne, Elara, and Atticus staring at her.
Her movements froze. She looked down at her plate, wondering if she had taken something she shouldn't have.
"What are you still eating for?" Elara snapped. "Evie is running around. You're supposed to be watching her, not eating!"
"Even a nanny needs to eat to take care of a child," Ryan said, following Evie around. He was tempted to reveal Katniss's true identity to shock them.
Dwayne forced a smile. "Mr. Grey is very understanding. After all, Katniss works in our company's admin department. We're just worried she might not meet Mr. Forbes's expectations. Technically, she's here to take care of Evie, so her focus should be on Evie."
"So, you're saying once Evie is full, I shouldn't even eat and should just leave?" Katniss asked tentatively.
"Of course," Elara said without hesitation. "You're here to look after Evie. Wherever she goes, you go!"
Katniss had almost finished eating. Seeing Tristan's expression darken at their words, she quickly kicked him under the table.
Then she put down her utensils and took Evie to the living room.
But even then, Elara still couldn't stand her.
Evie was too fond of Katniss, always clinging to her and treating her like a mother.
No, she had to get rid of Katniss!
Thinking this, she put down her utensils. "I'm full. You all continue eating. I'll go to the living room."
She walked to the living room, watching Katniss play with Evie by the window, and scanned the area, her eyes landing on Katniss's bag by the entrance.
