Chapter 387 If I Can Return, You Don't Need to Wait

Tristan's heart ached as if it were being twisted.

He didn't dare to say too much to Katniss, afraid he wouldn't be able to control his emotions.

But when she sat next to him, holding his arm and trying to be playful, he couldn't hold back anymore.

Tristan turned and pressed her beneath him, his cool lips tightly against her soft ones.

His kiss was filled with deep reluctance and dominance.

Tristan's cool fingertips slipped under her clothes, sending a tingling sensation through her.

"Katniss, will you miss me?" He asked, releasing her and gently rubbing his nose against hers.

Katniss's eyes reddened, and she nodded slightly, "Yes, and so will Evie."

Tristan's throat tightened, and he chuckled lightly, "Missing someone can be endured. When you have nothing to do, don't stay at home all the time. Think about happy things."

"But all my happy things are related to you," Katniss said, hooking her hand around his neck and kissing his lips, "If I miss you, I'll call you. I don't need to think about happy things."

"What if you can't reach me?" Tristan freed a hand and tapped her nose, "If you can't reach me, don't cry. Call someone else to distract yourself."

Katniss swatted his hand away, "If I can't reach you, I'll keep calling until I do."

Tristan lowered his head, his chiseled face buried in her neck, "Not listening? I'll get angry."

In the quiet room, the two whispered intimately.

Katniss thought that after they reconciled and had Evie, they would never be apart again. He was reluctant, so he was clingy.

But she never thought it was a different kind of farewell and advice.

Tristan didn't let her take him to the airport. After dinner, it was Ryan who came to pick him up.

He took the suitcase from her hand, and as his veined hand grabbed the suitcase, his fingertips turned white.

He tightly held the handle, changed his shoes, and looked back at her, "Take good care of Evie."

"Okay." Katniss leaned against the doorway and smiled at him, "I'll wait for you to come back."

Tristan turned and walked out, his black shirt blending into the night. He waved, "Don't wait. If I can come back, you won't need to wait."

His voice was very light, carried away by the night wind, and Katniss, standing in the doorway, almost didn't hear what he said.

Watching him walk away without looking back, she felt like something was slowly slipping away from her heart.

Emory and Nicholas were already waiting at the airport.

Accompanying them was one of Emory's suitcases.

Seeing Tristan stride in from outside, Emory quickly went up to him, "I'm ready. I'm going with you."

"No need." Tristan refused decisively, "I can handle this alone. Duke is very vigilant. One more person is just one more burden."

"But with me, the chances of him being taken down are higher." Emory insisted, "This is my fault. If I hadn't been deceived by the Patel family, you wouldn't have to do this!"

In the vast airport, his raised voice drew the attention of passersby.

Tristan frowned, looking at the three people in front of him, and said coldly, "Do what I asked you to do."

His unquestionable tone still couldn't make Emory give up the idea.

Until Tristan patted his shoulder and said in a deep voice, "I recognize you as my Godfather. Don't disappoint me."

Godfather. The word instantly added a lot of responsibility to Emory's shoulders.

Watching Tristan's back as he went to check in, his steps were heavy, unable to move forward.

But he stood in place, running his hands through his short hair, unable to process his nearly collapsing emotions.

He asked Nicholas, "Are we just going to watch him go?"

"What else?" Nicholas retorted, "Tie him up and keep him here forever..."

"That's better than him dying!" Emory roared.

Nicholas was silent for a moment, then said with desperate calm, "For him, it's worse than death. For Katniss, long pain is worse than short pain."

Katniss suddenly couldn't sleep. Tonight, Evie slept soundly in the first half of the night.

She thought it would be a peaceful night.

Unexpectedly, in the second half of the night, Evie was very restless.

Sometimes her hand would suddenly lift, her breathing would quicken, and she would whimper in fear, or she would suddenly cry out.

Already unable to sleep, Katniss was even more awake, looking at the dark sky outside and listening to Evie's restless cries, her mind in turmoil.

Her bedroom door was open, and perhaps the crying had disturbed Sophia, who came upstairs.

"What's wrong? She was sleeping well earlier."

"I don't know." Katniss walked around the room with Evie in her arms, "Maybe she hasn't gotten over the shock."

Sophia made some formula, and with something to eat, Evie calmed down a bit; at least she stopped crying.

After eating, she was fully awake, so Katniss took her downstairs to the living room to play with toys.

She leaned on the sofa, watching Evie play, from the night to the early dawn, until it was fully bright.

She didn't move at all, her mind somewhat blank. Even when Sophia took Evie to feed her, she didn't react.

"After being up all night, she might be tired and fall asleep again." Sophia came out of the bedroom, speaking softly.

Katniss's eyelids twitched, and she stood up, the first ray of piercing sunlight of the morning slanting in.

She squinted her eyes and remembered something, "Tristan should have arrived in the neighboring city by now. Why hasn't he called me?"

"Maybe he knows Evie didn't sleep well and didn't want to disturb you with a call." Sophia speculated, "Do you want to take a nap?"

"No need." Katniss wasn't sleepy at all, feeling particularly alert.

She even had a sudden urge to cook, so she asked Sophia to take Evie for a nap.

Around eight, Evie woke up, and Sophia brought her out, immediately seeing Katniss sitting at the dining table.

Four prepared breakfasts, one specifically made for Evie.

Just like when Tristan was home, his portion was made without ketchup.

Katniss sat there, her hands supporting her head, looking at the dining table.

"Why didn't you eat first?" Sophia walked over and sat down. "The food is cold."

"I wanted to wait for you all," Katniss said woodenly, standing up to reheat the breakfasts.

As she reheated, she said, "I thought Tristan wasn't on a business trip, so I made an extra portion. I won't reheat his. I'll freeze it and let him eat it when he comes back. After all, I rarely make breakfast for him."

Before Sophia could say anything, the doorbell suddenly rang.

The urgent ringing startled Katniss, making her hand shake.

Two breakfast plates fell to the ground, shattering instantly.

"Are you hurt?" Sophia quickly pulled her out of the glass shards.

But her eyes were on the door, which was being knocked on as if it were vibrating, "Mom, watch Evie. I'll get the door."
