Chapter 311 It's Better to Ask the Person Involved

No wonder Katniss felt that now Tristan's feelings towards Eudora were not just dislike, but a deeper aversion, even hatred.

"After Bella's accident, Michael once discussed with me about marrying her, wanting to give Bella a good future," Samuel laughed silently, "So, do they even see us as human?"

When Bella was fine before, she treated Samuel with a cold and commanding attitude.

Michael never said anything, and even when Samuel had just joined the company and secretly helped Bella with a few small tasks, he was warned by Michael.

Michael had said, "Put those thoughts aside. She is a lady of the Astor family, not someone you can covet. If I find out you have any inappropriate thoughts, don't blame me for being rude."

At that time, Samuel found it ridiculous. He helped Bella only because he was afraid Bella would complain.

The elevator door opened, and Katniss saw his gloomy expression and couldn't help but laugh.

"So, I still say the same thing," Samuel took his hand out of his pocket, "Actually, we are quite suitable for each other."

"There are some things I can't say right now," Katniss paused, looked back at Samuel seriously, and said, "You'll understand in the future. We are not suitable for each other. I'm not worthy of you."

She had been with Tristan for so many years and now had a child. Wasn't that unworthy?

Samuel heard her unwillingness and didn't force it, "Then I wish us a happy cooperation in the future."

"Okay." Katniss nodded at him, smiled, and turned to leave the company.

Back home, she planned to have a good talk with Matilda about the secretary's matter, at least to look at the secretary's resume.

"Matilda hasn't come back yet?" She took off her shoes at the entrance and saw only Aaron doing his homework next to Evie's stroller, so she asked.

Aaron looked up and pointed to the room upstairs, "Matilda went upstairs. She came back quite early and hasn't come down since."

"Really?" Katniss looked upstairs, put down her bag, and was about to go up but was pulled aside by Sophia.

Sophia had just washed her hands, which were still wet. She quickly wiped them on herself and said worriedly, "Katniss, something's not right with Matilda. Can you ask her? She won't tell me."

"Don't worry, maybe she was wronged at the job market," Katniss comforted Sophia, "There are all kinds of people there."

"I don't think so. Go ask her," Sophia pushed Katniss, signaling her to go upstairs, "No matter what, persuade her to come down for dinner."

Seeing her so worried, Katniss quickly responded, "Got it. You go cook, leave it to me."

She took a plate of fruit upstairs and knocked on Matilda's door twice.

"I don't want dinner," Matilda's voice sounded a bit muffled.

"It's not about dinner, it's about the recruitment," Katniss responded.

Then she heard some rustling inside, and within a few seconds, Matilda came down and opened the door.

The room was dark, and Katniss couldn't even see Matilda's expression. She paused at the door and asked, "Can I turn on the light?"

"I'll do it," Matilda turned and turned on the light, then went back inside and sat by the floor-to-ceiling window without looking up.

Katniss put the fruit plate on the low table in front of her and immediately noticed her eyes were a bit red and swollen.

"Is it because of George?"

As soon as George was mentioned, Matilda's tears fell, "I met George's mother today. She went to the matchmaking market to find a date for George."

After a moment of silence, Katniss hit the nail on the head, "So, she doesn't agree with you being together at all? George said he was afraid you'd be sad, so he lied that she agreed?"

"Yes," Matilda nodded slightly, "Is this called good intentions? How can such a big thing be hidden? I've already told mom."

Last time, George didn't admit his relationship with Matilda in front of Odette, which made Sophia very angry.

This time, if the truth comes out, Sophia will definitely think George is too immature and unreliable.

"I'll talk to mom. As for you and George, you have to handle it yourself. After being together for so long, you should know his temper."

Katniss handed her a piece of watermelon, "But I want to know why his mother doesn't agree with you being together?"

Matilda opened her mouth, lowered her head, and ate the watermelon, mumbling, "Maybe I'm not likable."

"Nonsense," Katniss refuted without hesitation, "You're beautiful, well-behaved, and sensible. Which elder wouldn't like you?"

But Matilda didn't want to say much related to Katniss, "Anyway, she just doesn't agree. I don't want to figure out why. Katniss, just help me with mom. I'll handle George."

"Okay, let's not talk about this anymore," Katniss changed the subject, "Didn't you say you were going to sign the contract tomorrow? Give me the secretary's resume."

"Oh no," Matilda stood up suddenly, flustered, "I forgot to bring it. My mind was a bit fuzzy today."

She went to the education institution and left the resume there.

"Then forget it, I trust your judgment," Katniss said as she stood up, "Get ready for dinner later."

"Okay," Matilda stood up, carrying the fruit plate as she walked out with her, "The young lady's name is Hazel, she's very pretty and just entered the workforce."

Hazel? Katniss felt the name was somewhat familiar, but she couldn't recall who it was.

"After we sign the contract tomorrow, she can start work on Monday. Is that okay?" Matilda asked after finishing her sentence.

"Sure, you handle it. Have her report to the White Corporation on Monday," Katniss said.

After they went downstairs, Katniss found a moment to have a brief conversation with Sophia, using Matilda's busy schedule as an excuse to suggest that Sophia shouldn't think about meeting the Russell family for now.

She didn't mention George directly, but from Sophia's expression, she knew Sophia could guess the general situation.

The next day, the news of Tristan resigning from Synergy Global Corporation spread like wildfire.

Katniss stared at the news for a long time, unable to snap out of it.

As far as she knew, Tristan owned several million-dollar properties, and The Forbes Mansion was also quite valuable.

But compared to the billions of dollars of Synergy Global Corporation, those were just a drop in the bucket.

Saskia called, utterly puzzled, "What is he doing? Does he just want to live off the remaining assets and do nothing?"

Katniss, who used to confidently say he wouldn't do that, was now silent. She doubted if she ever really understood Tristan.

"Katniss, come over for lunch. It's inconvenient for me to go out with my big belly," Saskia suddenly said.

It was the weekend, and Katniss had nothing planned, but she looked at Evie, who was still sleeping, and declined, "I need to stay home with Evie."

"You don't need to stay!" Matilda and Aaron had been waiting outside the door since early morning, a rare occasion when neither had work or school.

After waking up, they squatted by Katniss's door, waiting for her and Evie to get up.

Katniss glanced at the door, helplessly pinching her brow, "You two, come in."

Matilda pushed the door open, and Aaron followed her in.

But as soon as they saw Evie still asleep, they stopped in their tracks.

"Katniss, if you have something to do, go ahead. I'll take care of Evie!" Matilda was almost ready to rush over and pull Katniss up.

Katniss propped her head with one hand, looking at them, "You're her aunt, and you're her uncle, but I'm her mother! It's the weekend, and I want to spend time with her."

"Katniss, that's not right," Aaron said seriously, "You've been back for so long, and how many times have you met with Saskia? It's rare to have a gathering. Once she has the baby, you won't have the chance. How can you not go? Besides, you can go at noon, have lunch, and come back. It's just one meal."

He was so persuasive that Saskia laughed on the other end, "He's right. I told you Aaron is smart. So it's settled."

Not giving Katniss a chance to argue, the call ended.

She sat up, and before she could speak, Aaron said, "Don't be mad! I have good news for you today."

"If it's not good news, I'm not going," Katniss said without hesitation.

Aaron looked proud, "My teacher recommended me for advanced placement. I completed three years of high school in one year, and I can take the college entrance exam this time."

"Really?" Katniss was stunned, her eyes wide as she looked at Aaron.

She had been quite busy and had paid little attention to Aaron's studies in the past year.

She knew Aaron was doing well in school, given his abilities.

But she didn't expect Aaron to be a genius!

"Do you remember our agreement?" she reminded him, "When you start making money, you have to pay me back."

Aaron's mouth twitched, "Why don't you think about exploiting me? Like, making me work for you for years?"

With his genius mind, his annual salary after graduation would surely be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the value he would bring to a company would be even higher!

"If I exploit you too much and you can't get married, wouldn't I be the sinner?" Katniss laughed.

It was indeed good news, and she felt great. Just then, Evie woke up, stretching and making little noises.

Matilda and Aaron didn't compete with her for Evie for now, letting her wash and dress Evie and go downstairs for breakfast.

Around ten, under Saskia's repeated text bombardment and Matilda and Aaron's eager looks to get her out of the house, Katniss went to the appointment.

On the way, she bought some baby items for Saskia. When she arrived at Saskia's house, she saw Tristan's car there too.

So, Tristan was there too. No wonder Saskia was so insistent on her coming over.

She couldn't help but frown.

Saskia saw her from the window, got up to greet her, and said, "It's Nicholas's fault. I just wanted to discuss Tristan with you. When Nicholas heard you were coming, he immediately called Tristan over, saying it's best to ask the person directly!"
