Chapter 462 Wouldn't She Be in Danger?
The car door swung open, and Tristan stepped out, striding over to place Katniss's suitcase in the trunk.
As she played with Evie through the window, Tristan came over and gently pulled her by the waist, guiding her to the front passenger seat.
Katniss had wanted to sit in the back with Evie, but Tristan's firm grip changed her plans.
She buckled her seatbelt and turned to look at Evie, who, still too young to understand much, just reached out her chubby arms and babbled, occasionally saying "mama."
Suddenly, a partition went up, blocking Evie's view. Katniss's smile froze, and before she could react, Tristan held her head in place.
He pressed her into the passenger seat, stealing her breath away. Her lips parted in a futile attempt to resist, but Tristan took advantage of the moment.
Their breaths mingled, a familiar yet fervent sensation. Two days apart felt like an eternity for Tristan.
Evie, unable to see the front, kicked the partition in frustration.
Katniss pushed Tristan away, seeing his unsatisfied expression as he leaned in for another kiss. She quickly raised her hand to stop him.
"What are you doing?"
The business car had a soundproof partition, but this private car didn't, unless someone had it installed. Clearly, Tristan had done just that.
His long, clean fingers rested on the seat above her head, his tongue pressing against his cheek as he savored the kiss that hadn't gone deep enough.
Tristan answered softly, "Not suitable for children."
Katniss retorted, "Can't you avoid doing things that aren't suitable for children?"
"How many adult things are suitable for children?" Tristan argued, hearing Evie getting more agitated in the back. He finally lowered the partition.
Starting the engine, they drove off. Evie had interrupted Tristan's plans, and he nearly made her cry.
Fortunately, Evie was too excited to see Katniss after a few days apart, calling out and interacting with her.
At one year old, Evie sometimes mimicked Tristan's way of walking with his hands in his pockets, and sometimes she imitated Katniss's stern look when she scolded Tristan.
Seeing the endless snowy plains outside, Evie pointed and gave Katniss a look as if to say, 'Mom, snow!'
The drive back to the city from the Banks Manor was long. During the trip, Katniss made Evie some formula and gave her snacks to keep her content.
Tristan had bought a small apartment in the city, close to Synergy Global Corporation's branch, for convenience.
The location was average, not in the wealthiest part of Northern Grassland City, but the environment was nice, mostly home to corporate executives.
Back home, Katniss quickly took Evie out of the car, hugging and kissing her as they entered the apartment.
Tristan followed with Katniss's luggage, his eyes briefly on the mother and daughter before catching up.
It was lunchtime when they got inside. After unpacking Katniss's things, Tristan went to the kitchen to prepare a meal.
Katniss, having cheered up Evie, went to the kitchen and wrapped her arms around Tristan's waist.
His hand shook, nearly flipping the pan.
"You've worked hard," Katniss said, resting her chin on Tristan's shoulder, looking at his profile.
He glanced at her, meeting her clear eyes for a few seconds before asking, "Do you need something from me?"
"It's not about needing something. We're married; we share everything," Katniss replied, moving to lean against the counter, facing him.
Tristan scoffed, "You only share the tough times with me, not the good ones."
Katniss's eyes widened, "When have I not shared the good times with you?"
"At night," Tristan said, continuing to cook the steak, "I always make sure you're comfortable, but you never return the favor."
His stamina was impressive, especially after taking the antidote. Nearly a year without touching Katniss had turned Tristan into a 'demon,' draining her energy and nearly killing her.
Katniss felt a sudden ache in her waist, rubbing it, "You don't need to make me comfortable. I don't have much of a need."
Tristan's gaze sharpened, "So, you're not interested in me anymore?"
"Not exactly," Katniss reasoned, "It's like taking too many sleeping pills; you become immune."
She meant that there was no need to focus on it because being with him naturally led to intimacy.
But Tristan took it differently. Immune? Too frequent and boring? Or maybe he needed new ideas to keep Katniss interested...
"I'll have Ryan arrange something for you this afternoon," he said, "But tonight, you follow my lead."
Katniss's legs felt weak, but she agreed, "Okay."
Ryan, working remotely, quickly investigated the Banks family. Despite the distance and time constraints, he found that Dwayne was in charge of the Banks Group, with Atticus as the deputy general manager.
The Banks family company in Northern Grassland City was called Banks Far Company, abbreviated as the Banks Group.
Violette, confident in her position, had no fear of Katniss discovering the connection between Banks Far Company and the Banks Group.
Ryan swiftly arranged a position for Katniss in the administrative department, starting the next day.
"You're going to work at Banks Far Company as a low-level employee? Aren't you worried someone will recognize you?" Tristan asked, "After all, you've helped Benjamin reclaim the White family and managed Zenith Group and Synergy Global Corporation. Someone must have seen your photo."
Katniss shook her head, "In such a remote place, who would recognize me? The photos in the news don't look exactly like me. Even Dwayne, my biological father, didn't recognize me. No one else will."
"Aren't you afraid they'll bully you?" Tristan pinched her chin, "What are you trying to do? Getting the Banks family isn't worth this risk."
Going undercover at Banks Far Company meant Katniss would eventually face Dwayne.
If he discovered she knew Banks Far Company was part of the Banks family, she'd be in danger.
Katniss patted his shoulder, "My grandmother doesn't care about the Banks family's wealth. She cares about whether my mom can be buried in the family tomb. She believes my dad has a mistress and wants me to find out who it is. That way, she can get my dad kicked out of the Banks family. Even if he retaliates against the family's business, my mom can still leave him and be buried in the family tomb."
Discussing this daunting task, Katniss seemed anxious.
Despite Tristan with striking presence and many admirers, Katniss had never caught a cheater before.
Her first time catching an affair was her father's.
"Are you sure your father's mistress is in the company?" Tristan asked thoughtfully.
