Chapter 295 I'll Take This Child

You actually took Emory's words seriously!

Katniss stared at Emory without blinking, "Yes or no?"

"Would I lie to you?" Emory walked over to Katniss and said without hesitation, "Luckily, this child isn't born yet. Otherwise, I'd have this child call you grandma."

Katniss choked and coughed, taking the opportunity to walk over to the windowsill.

She remained silent in their conversation, yet she was the center of the topic.

"Alright, I'll acknowledge this child!" Natalia said decisively, smiling at the still-coughing Katniss and motioning for Emory to hand her a tissue.

Then she called Sophia over, "Are you Katniss's mother?"

"Yes." Sophia, not good with words, couldn't handle Natalia's enthusiasm and tried to walk over to Katniss, but Natalia pulled her to sit by the bed.

"How long until the due date? Boy or girl? Are you planning to have the baby here or back home?"

As they chatted incessantly, Emory walked over to Katniss and whispered, "Do me a favor. Your child gets an extra dad and grandma; it's a good deal. My mom is very generous."

"Oh, right," Emory added, "I'll personally explain to your child's father, so it won't cause you any trouble."

"That's not necessary," Katniss forced a smile.

After a while, Emory didn't understand. Any father would mind if their child suddenly had a Godfather, right?

How could it not need an explanation?

Seeing the faint sadness in Katniss's eyes, he gasped, "Dead? My condolences, but this means your child needs a father even more..."

Katniss didn't hear what he said next; her mind was buzzing.

His persuasion and Natalia's chatter made her head feel like it was going to explode, and she remained silent for a long time.

It wasn't until she left the hospital room that her ears finally felt clear.

She realized a problem, "What do those two really mean?"

Sophia looked at her, a bit confused, "Didn't they say one would be the child's Godfather and the other the child's grandma?"

"Seriously?" She was incredulous; she hadn't even agreed verbally!

After a long silence, Sophia looked back at the hospital room and said, "They're a bit unreliable. Maybe it's just a whim. Let's not take it to heart and go home first."

That made sense. Katniss agreed and took a cab with Sophia back to the mall, then drove her own car home.

Meanwhile, Natalia had already started figuring out when Katniss's due date was and began preparing gifts.

Emory was also very serious. He finally found something for Natalia and avoided being nagged about marriage.

"Let me tell you, Emory, you can't just talk. If you become the child's Godfather, you have to fulfill your duties. Besides, this child doesn't have a dad, understand?" Natalia saw his lack of enthusiasm and gave him a lecture.

"Got it," Emory nodded, a bit perfunctory.

Natalia saw right through him, "This won't do. Even if the child isn't biologically yours, the bond from recognizing them as family is there. In the future, when you get married and have kids, they might not even be biologically yours! So you have to treat them well."

Her words almost made Emory not react.

What was even more absurd to Emory was that he actually found it reasonable!

So, he got involved. The thought of a child calling him Godfather from a young age made him inexplicably happy.

If it was a girl, he'd be even happier.

"I'm going to be a Godfather?" Emory suddenly grinned, "A Godfather is like a dad, not worse than a biological one. For example, Tristan's dad is definitely not as good as me as a Godfather."

Hearing this, Natalia glared at him, "Can you not mention that annoying person right now? He's not just unfit to be a dad; he's unfit to be a person. By the way, how's Tristan? Wasn't he supposed to get married before the end of the year?"

Emory was puzzled, "He's getting married? I didn't know! He didn't tell me!"

"Oh right, he was afraid you'd go back and delay your work, so he asked me to keep it from you." Natalia patted her forehead. Seeing Emory's gloomy face, she quickly patted his shoulder and said, "Emory, he tricked you, but now that you're going to be a Godfather, he can't be. Your chance for revenge has come."

"Alright, I'll go show off!" Emory grabbed his phone and walked out of the hospital room, heading to the end of the hallway to call Tristan.

As the evening approached and the city lights began to shine, it was afternoon back home.

Spring sunlight filled the room. Tristan, holding a cigarette in his left hand, put down his wine glass with his right hand when he heard his phone ring and swiped the screen to answer.

"Tristan, why didn't you tell me you were getting married?"

Tristan's eyes darkened. After a moment of closing his eyes to rest, his voice was calm, "You called just for this?"

"Of course not," Emory quickly denied, "I'm calling to report a major event in my life."

After a moment of silence, he asked, "Why don't you ask me what it is?"

"What else could it be?" Tristan retorted, "Have you picked out a cemetery?"

"You're so mean, can't you stop?" Emory was exasperated, "Guess again!"

He was asking for it, letting Tristan guess even in this situation.

Tristan added, "Picked a good day to die? Found a girlfriend? Getting married?"

"None of those," Emory denied all at once.

Hearing this, Tristan sneered, "Became a dad directly? Congratulations."

"That's right!" Emory boasted, "I'm going to be a Godfather. The child isn't born yet, single mom, and as soon as the baby is born, I'll be the only Godfather."

For some reason, Tristan felt a pang in his heart and didn't respond.

"I just realized, so there's a bit of the joy of being a dad," Emory shared his excitement, "I don't know if it's a boy or a girl yet, but I like girls."

He rambled on as if it were his own child.

"Oh, by the way, you know the child's mother!" After a while, Emory got to the point, "It's..."

Tristan did know Katniss, and he was about to blurt it out when he suddenly felt something was off.

He got a child for free, and Tristan might get jealous and contact Katniss to revoke his Godfather status. He'd have nowhere to cry then.

"What?" Tristan frowned and asked.

"It's someone you met before, a classmate from when we were studying here," Emory lied smoothly.

Tristan changed the subject, "How's the cooperation with White Corporation going? Is White Corporation stable?"

The topic changed quickly, and Emory's face, still smiling about becoming a dad, couldn't hide it.

After a while, he said, "It's relatively stable for now. Once we secure this project, White Corporation won't have any major issues for the next six months."

Then, she should be coming back soon.

"Anything else?" Tristan asked impatiently, "If not, I'm hanging up."

"Wait a minute!" Emory hurriedly called out, "I want to apply to return home. I don't want to stay in this place anymore."

"Finish your work abroad, and you can come back whenever you want. I won't stop you. After Synergy Global Corporation's matters are settled, you should indeed come back to help me."

Tristan spoke as if it were a given, arranging Emory's work.

Emory didn't argue, instead, he turned serious, "Got it. When I come back, I'll definitely help you, and my mom will help you too!"

When Emory mentioned Natalia, Tristan's expression became indescribable, and after a while, he hung up the phone.

Katniss thought Emory's talk about being a Godfather was a joke.

But she didn't expect Emory to ask Ronnie for her address and rush over the next day to deliver things.

There were things he bought for the child and things Natalia bought for the child.

Both she and Sophia felt extremely uncomfortable, and Emory noticed.

"You don't need to feel uncomfortable. My mom's health isn't good, and her biggest wish is to hold a grandchild. She's obsessed. The doctor said she's just bored and needs something to do."

As he unpacked the things he bought, he said, "I found her many things to do, but she didn't want to do any of them. I mentioned being a Godfather to your child casually, but she's so invested. You're helping me solve a problem."

Katniss didn't know if he was being polite or sincere. Seeing him take out one expensive item after another, she thought for a while and said, "These things are quite expensive. How about..."

Before she could finish, Emory raised his hand to stop her, "Stop. Talking about money hurts our relationship. I won't be polite with you. If you make me unhappy, I'll ask you to pay me back. But if you bring up money first, I'll be unhappy."

"Then you'll be unhappy sooner or later. Just settle the account now," Katniss replied.

Immediately, Emory's face darkened, "Why are you acting like that person? Who dares to contradict me me like this?"

Seeing he was unhappy, Katniss didn't continue.

The things he brought added up to over a hundred thousand dollars. For people like them, it wasn't much.

If she insisted on being too clear about it and made Emory unhappy, he might cause trouble in their cooperation.

She decided to remember this favor and make up for it in their cooperation if necessary.

Velvet City.

Michael arranged for Eudora to meet with a partner named Milan Runyon, a man in his fifties with a son who was mentally challenged.

His wife had died early, and he had remarried several times, but all his wives died.

People said it was because Milan had done too many bad things when he was young, and it was karma affecting his son and wives.

No one dared to marry Milan anymore, fearing they would die for no reason.

But it had to be admitted that Milan was very capable at work.

Eudora had heard many people mention him. He wasn't as old as the rumors said and had a bit of charm.

But when she met him in person, she realized the rumors were not reliable.

Milan possessed all the unappealing traits: baldness, a potbelly, and yellowed teeth.

Especially when he saw her, the lecherous gleam in his eyes made her uncomfortable.

"Mr. Runyon," she had to greet him and extended her hand.

Suddenly, she felt painful on her butt. Milan didn't shake her hand but slapped her butt!
