Chapter 377 Otherwise, She Would Die with Regrets
In response to Eudora's declaration and Aaron's sibling sovereignty, Katniss finally lost her patience and slapped her.
Katniss's raised hand came down hard on Eudora's cheek, causing her to stagger and crash into the wall.
"Eudora, can you act normal? If there's something wrong with your brain, go see a neurologist early on and stop causing trouble here! Aaron is indeed your brother, but you don't deserve to be his sister! It's very easy for me to separate him from you, but I don't want to burden him! I don't want him to feel incompetent!"
"Aaron is no longer a child; he is an adult now."
An adult young man had his pride, and being fought over by her and Eudora would leave an indelible shadow in his heart.
It might even make him feel incompetent, unable to support himself, a burden, a nuisance.
That was why Katniss didn't want to use forceful means to do anything.
She wanted to leave the matter for Aaron to handle himself.
"Are you threatening me?" Eudora covered half of her face, her sinister gaze piercing through her disheveled hair at Katniss. "Do you think just because you have Tristan, you can do whatever you want? You can..."
"Don't push me to slap you again. If you can speak in plain language, go care for Aaron. If not, just shut your mouth."
Katniss rubbed her arm, which hurt again from hitting her, and said without looking up, "I've already contacted his school to arrange accommodation for him. Where he goes during holidays will be his freedom."
Reasoning with Eudora was futile, and constantly hitting her wasn't a solution either.
She didn't want to say more, and just then, a nurse pushed out the still-unconscious Aaron.
She followed the nurse to take Aaron to the ward, and Eudora, covering her reddened face, followed as well.
But before Katniss could enter the ward, Eudora suddenly grabbed her wrist.
"Katniss, one day... You will lose everything, and I will watch you cry! I will..."
"Go home and sleep early." Katniss shook off her hand. "In your dreams, you can have whatever you want."
With that, Katniss entered the ward.
After the nurse explained Aaron's condition and left, Eudora was nowhere to be seen.
The doctor said Aaron wouldn't wake up until the afternoon at the earliest. Katniss sat on the sofa, waiting for a while, suddenly realizing that Matilda, who had gone to pay the fees, hadn't returned yet.
She asked at the nurse's station where the payment office was and was about to go there when she saw George's father, Brian Russell.
She had only seen Brian once at the resort and hadn't seen him since.
Back then, Brian was still full of energy.
After a few years, he now looked as if decades had passed.
His hair was white, his steps were unsteady, his complexion was poor, and he walked hurriedly towards the end of the inpatient department with a frown.
"Excuse me, what's over there?" Katniss pointed to the corner where Brian disappeared.
The young nurse stood up to look and said, "That's the intensive care unit, where patients who are still in critical condition and whose lives are uncertain are kept."
Katniss thanked her and quickly followed Brian.
The windows of the ICU rooms were large, and standing outside, one could almost see the entire room.
As soon as she reached that floor, she saw George and Matilda standing in front of a window.
George's clothes were wrinkled, a layer of stubble had grown on his chin, and he stood at the ICU door, staring inside without blinking.
Matilda stood beside him, looking just as bad.
Both of them seemed to have lost a lot of weight.
She took a few more steps forward and saw that it was Odette lying in the room, and Brian had already changed into sterile clothing and gone inside.
"Katniss." Matilda saw her reflection in the glass and turned to see Katniss. "I finished paying the fees, and I saw him..."
Her mouth twitched uncontrollably, pointing at George, and tears kept falling.
George also turned around. "Is anyone in your family unwell? Why are you at the hospital?"
"It's not us, it's someone else." Katniss briefly explained and was about to ask about Odette's condition when George interrupted her.
"As long as it's not you, everyone should take good care of their health. Nothing is more important than health."
After saying that, he turned back, lowered his head in thought for a few seconds, and added, "Give me some more time. With my mom like this, I don't know what to say to you."
Matilda quickly said, "I'll stay. I'll help you take care of her."
"Better not." George refused. "My mom isn't completely unconscious. She woke up once a few days ago and said that no matter what, I must marry Fiona, or she would die with regrets."
In this situation, if Matilda stayed at the hospital, it would agitate Odette if she woke up.
It was precisely because of Odette's words that George hadn't called Matilda.
Before Matilda could say anything, George quickly added, "I don't want to divorce you. She hasn't woken up yet. Once she does and her condition stabilizes, I will tell her that I won't marry anyone but you!"
Katniss replied, "Now is not the time to discuss this. Matilda staying here would indeed have some impact. Take care of Ms. Murphy and yourself. If you need any help, just ask."
There were people all around; it wasn't the time to get emotional and discuss these matters.
At a critical moment of life and death, talking about feelings was inappropriate.
Hearing that George's phone was broken, Matilda took out the SIM card and left her phone for him.
At the very least, they could stay in touch.
Then she went back to Aaron's ward with Katniss.
"Katniss, you were right. I shouldn't have dragged this out." Matilda was almost hating herself. If she had gone to find George in time, she would have known that Odette was in a coma and hospitalized.
She wouldn't have been worrying for so long.
Suddenly, everything felt chaotic, and Eudora's words kept echoing in Katniss's ears.
She took a deep breath, frowned, and said, "With Odette's illness, your situation with George will be put on hold. I'll talk to Mom about it. Why don't you move back home for now?"
"Let me take care of Aaron in the hospital for the next few days." Matilda suddenly said, "He needs someone to look after him. I'm also worried about George. At least I can see him from a distance every day."
Aaron would be hospitalized for at least two or three days until the scabs on his foot healed, before the doctor would allow him to be discharged.
Katniss couldn't take care of him, and seeing the pleading look in Matilda's eyes, she could only agree.
She left a note for Aaron and went home.
At home, only Tristan was there; Sophia had taken Evie for a walk in the neighborhood.
As she was changing her shoes in the hallway, Tristan sensed something was wrong. He strode over with his long legs, helped her put her bag away, and looked at her intently.
After she finished changing her shoes, his strong hand grabbed her wrist, and she fell into his arms. His voice poured down from above.
"Darling, what happened?" The endless affection in his voice became a source of strength, driving away her fatigue and that strange feeling.
