Chapter 324 I Really Am a Jinx

After all, Adelaide was getting old, and she walked shakily, flanked by two servants on either side.

But the look in her eyes, her tone, her expression—they were murderous enough to tear Katniss apart.

Sensing the tension, Emory quickly stood up and went over to intercept Adelaide.

"Mrs. Forbes, long time no see. You know, every time we meet, something happens to Tristan. I must be a jinx. Please calm down, don't worry. Let me help you sit down and wait for the results. The doctor said he's not in any serious danger."

He helped Adelaide to sit on the bench.

To say he helped her would be an understatement; it was more like he forcibly dragged her over. How could Adelaide match his strength?

He practically pinned her down on the bench with his hands on her shoulders, not letting her get up, which immediately made Adelaide's face turn cold towards him.

"Emory, let go of me. I just want to ask her, does she have to see Tristan die in front of her to be satisfied?"

"Mrs. Forbes, I really can't agree with you saying that." Emory maintained his position, glancing at the disheveled Katniss, and said, "Do you believe that if Tristan takes his last breath, it won't be you who can't handle it first, but her? Whether you want to believe it or not, Tristan would die for her willingly, rushing in front of her without hesitation!"

A few words left Adelaide speechless, unable to respond.

"So, she's not at fault. You can't control Tristan, so why are you giving her a hard time?"

Emory bent down, releasing one hand to gently pat Adelaide's back, worried she might get too upset.

Katniss withdrew her gaze; Adelaide's anger couldn't stir any waves in her.

Her eyes were fixed on the red light above the emergency room, her mind only on Tristan.

Suddenly, the door of the operating room opened, and it wasn't the doctor who came out, but a staggering Tristan.

His white shirt was stained red with blood, his lips were colorless, and a fifth of his hair on the right side of his forehead had been shaved off.

That area was wrapped in thick bandages, and he no longer had his usual spirited look, not even close to handsome.

His deep eyes moved slightly, landing directly on Katniss, who was trying to get up from the floor.

She stumbled as she got up and rushed over to him, her head dizzy from crying too long, falling into his arms.

He staggered, and the doctor and nurse who followed him quickly reached out to steady him.

Once he was stable, they let go and went to report Tristan's condition to Adelaide, who had also gotten up and walked over.

"Mrs. Forbes, rest assured, Mr. Forbes is not in any life-threatening danger. However, his left hand is severely fractured, with the bones shattered, which will affect its function, but he can still manage on his own. The head injury is quite serious, with significant blood loss, and he needs proper rest. He also has a mild concussion..."

The doctor continued to explain, but Katniss couldn't take it in. She pressed tightly against his chest, listening to his heart beating strong and steady, just like before.

"All's well that ends well. He still has the strength to hold Katniss, so he won't die!" Emory saw Adelaide trying to pull Katniss and Tristan apart and quickly stepped forward, taking Adelaide's arm to lighten the mood. "Look at Tristan, if you leave him alone, he might fulfill your wish and have a child! But remember, you have to let him be."

Adelaide could see he was protecting Katniss, but with so many people around, she had no choice but to return and continue listening to the doctor's instructions.

Katniss loosened her grip on him, lifting her head from his chest to see his bloodless lips. She stood on tiptoe and kissed them.

Quickly, she pulled away. "Does it hurt?"

"It doesn't hurt, but seeing you cry makes my heart ache." He gently opened his lips, his hand threading through her hair, bending down to kiss her lips, their noses touching.

After the car accident, he was dazed, with only one thought: as long as he had a breath left, he had to get out of the car and let her see him alive.

As they stitched his head wound, he gradually regained consciousness, impatient with the nurses' slow pace, he got off the operating table and walked out.

However, he chuckled lightly, "Maybe I'm getting old. Walking here almost made me collapse, but luckily you came."

As he spoke, his body leaned against the wall, but he still held her tightly.

"So, we don't have much time left. Let's not waste any more time, okay? How many seven years do we have? How many more years can we afford to squander?"

For seven years of marriage, he didn't even realize she was his wife, much less cherish her. If there was any comfort, it was that she had devoted herself to him completely during that time.

In the blink of an eye, it had been almost a year since the wedding was canceled.

"Okay." As soon as she spoke, he smiled suddenly, but his body gradually slid down, his eyelids heavy. He could barely watch her panic and call for the doctor.

Due to excessive blood loss and weakness, he couldn't hold on and fainted. He would need at least half a month to recover enough to leave the hospital.

After that, it would take another year or so to fully recover.

Once Tristan was moved to a VIP room, Katniss began to understand the situation from the doctor.

She was quite grateful to Emory, as he managed to coax and force Adelaide to leave.

In the room, it was just her and Tristan. She cut off his blood-stained shirt and then noticed his left hand was wrapped in thick bandages.

When he hugged her earlier, he still held her so tightly.

There were a few bruises on his body, probably from the impact, and they must have hurt a lot.

She filled a basin with warm water and wiped the remaining blood off his face, then his neck and chest.

After cleaning him up, she changed him into clean hospital clothes with the help of a nurse.

By the time they were done, it was completely dark outside.

The previously quiet hallway suddenly filled with hurried footsteps, and the next second, the door to the room was pushed open.

"Katniss."

"Katniss!"

Matilda and Sophia entered with red-rimmed eyes.

Seeing Katniss standing there unharmed, they both sighed in relief.

But when they saw Tristan on the hospital bed, their expressions turned complicated.

Sophia looked at Katniss and Tristan's interlocked fingers, her face showing indescribable complexity.

"Mom," Katniss lowered her head and slowly said, "I know you worry about me, but..."

"I understand." Sophia quickly walked over when she saw Katniss's tears, "I respect your choice. As for him, I have nothing to say."

In the quiet room, only Tristan's shallow breathing could be heard. They looked at each other for a while before Katniss remembered about Evie's illness.

She let go of Tristan's hand and quickly walked over to ask, "How is Evie? What did the doctor say? Where is she now?"

Sophia hurriedly patted her hand to comfort her, "Don't worry, it's nothing serious. The doctor prescribed some medicine, and her fever has gone down. Emory and Natalia are at home with her now, along with Aaron. The three of them can handle it."

"I need to stay at the hospital for a while. Please take good care of her for me. If anything happens, call me immediately."

The thought of not seeing Evie for at least a week made Katniss feel very sad.

Matilda glanced at the hospital bed and whispered, "Katniss, don't you plan to let him know?"

"After he gets out of the hospital." Katniss definitely wanted Tristan to know about Evie.

But if she told him now, he wouldn't rest properly and would go straight home to be with Evie.

"Alright, you take good care of him here. Mom and I will take care of Evie for you." Matilda patted her chest and then asked, "By the way, should I bring you nutritious meals every day?"

"What do you mean 'should I'?" Sophia scolded, "Tomorrow morning, I'll buy some bones to make soup. If you have time, you can bring it over at noon. If not, let Emory bring it."

Matilda let out an 'ah' and gave Katniss an embarrassed smile, "Mom's right, that's what I meant."

Their words warmed Katniss's heart.

"It's getting late. You should go home and rest. Be careful on the way."

Matilda had been practicing her driving skills, and now she could drive herself. Otherwise, it would be hard to get a cab this late.

After seeing them off, Katniss sat by Tristan's bed, lost in thought for a while.

Then she got up, walked to the window, and took out her phone to call Benjamin.

As soon as the call connected, Benjamin spoke first, "I've been waiting for your call. The traffic accident has been determined to be an attempted murder by the SUV driver. He claimed he mistook the person, but he had received an extra $100,000, which was transferred from Beau's account."

Beau thought it was foolproof and wasn't afraid of anyone finding out.

He wanted to warn everyone that he was not to be messed with.

But he didn't expect that the $100,000 would be wasted, as Katniss was unharmed.

No, it wasn't wasted; it brought trouble.

"I'm going to take down White Corporation." Katniss's words were cold and emotionless.

"Ah," Benjamin sighed, "White Corporation just got back on track, and now it's going to take a hit again. But there's no choice. After all, you're my person. Go ahead, just don't bankrupt it. I have no objections, since it's my fault for bringing this trouble to you."

Katniss was silent for a moment, then asked in surprise, "You seem to have anticipated that I would do this?"

Benjamin chuckled, "Mr. Forbes has done so much for you, even risking his life. You wouldn't be at peace if you didn't do something in return, right?"

Now, whatever Katniss wanted to do, she relied on Benjamin and White Corporation, so she had to inform Benjamin.

And even if Benjamin disagreed, she had ways to make him agree.

In the early morning, Tristan started to have a fever. Katniss quickly called the nurse, who gave him an antipyretic injection.

"Why is he having a fever?" Katniss asked the nurse anxiously, "Is there something wrong with his body that we haven't discovered?"

"Miss Grey, don't worry. It's normal to have a fever after losing a lot of blood from an injury," the nurse explained.

Hearing this, Katniss frowned and asked, "If you knew he would have a fever, why couldn't you prevent it in advance? Will the fever make his concussion worse?"
