Chapter 294 My Last Name is Also Stuart
As for what exactly, Katniss couldn't quite say.
She suddenly felt that she hadn't fully understood Tristan either.
"How long until your due date?" Saskia changed the subject.
She looked down at her rounded belly, her expression softening, "Less than two months."
Saskia sighed inwardly. She had left decisively and returned quietly with a child.
If Tristan knew she had silently done something big, he might go crazy.
But she also understood Katniss; the more people knew about the pregnancy, the more dangerous it would be.
"I'll reserve a spot as Godmother," Saskia added, "But let's not arrange any childhood betrothals. We don't want the kids to dislike each other and ruin our friendship."
Katniss raised an eyebrow, her tone slightly higher, "Are you pregnant?"
"I'm not telling you. Who told you to keep your pregnancy a secret from me?" Saskia retorted.
She couldn't help but laugh, faintly hearing Nicholas's disdainful voice on the other end, "Saskia, pregnancy brain is real, but Katniss didn't seem to suffer from it. With you, it's in full effect!"
Pregnant Katniss was incredibly sharp, not at all sentimental, prioritizing her and her child's safety, decisively staying far away from Tristan and keeping it a secret from everyone.
"Are you looking for trouble?" Saskia snapped back, "I'm having your child, and you dare say that to me? Do you believe I'll give this child my last name, Stuart?"
"No way!" Nicholas always indulged her, but not when it came to the child's last name, "I'm the only child of the Kennedy family. The child must have my last name!"
They didn't realize the call was still connected, and their argument was sweet. Katniss listened quietly.
"The child is mine. I'll decide the last name!" Saskia said arrogantly, "Try arguing with me again."
There was an unknown sound, and the next second Nicholas said fiercely, "I'll change my last name to Stuart too, but the child will still have my last name."
Saskia called him a jerk, and he mumbled stubbornly.
Katniss's lips gradually curved into a smile as she listened to their back-and-forth.
Feeling a bit sad, she finally hung up the phone.
One hand on her belly, the other gently rubbing the phone screen, her eyes stared blankly out the window, lost in thought.
As the weather warmed, Katniss's pregnancy advanced, making her feel lazy.
Sophia often dragged her out for walks, saying it would make natural childbirth easier.
But when Katniss refused, she had to use the excuse of buying baby supplies to take her to the mall.
This interested Katniss. She drove Sophia to a nearby mall, heading straight for the baby section.
She wasn't sure if she was having a boy or a girl, but she liked girls, so she instinctively chose pink items.
"It might be a boy," Sophia often picked blue items, "This one looks nice."
"Mom, do you prefer boys?" She didn't know Sophia valued boys over girls.
Sophia held a small outfit, silent for a while before saying, "I have a selfish reason. If you have a boy, Mrs. Forbes will definitely regret it."
In wealthy families, boys were often valued over girls, especially in the Forbes family, where only a male heir could inherit the family fortune.
Although Adelaide had been very kind to Katniss before, Sophia had once thought Adelaide was a good person.
But she had heard that Katniss and Tristan's breakup was partly due to Adelaide, and she was discontented with Adelaide because of it.
She couldn't help but glance at Katniss, "Am I being too petty? You won't be mad at me, right?"
"No," Katniss smiled, placing the small outfit in the shopping cart, "This isn't something that can be judged right or wrong. If we dwell on it too much, we'll only make ourselves miserable."
"You're generous, but I can't do that," Sophia admitted.
Seven years of youth! Katniss had wasted it all because of her. If it weren't for her, Katniss wouldn't have gotten involved with the Forbes family.
If it had ended well, her guilt and sense of debt would be less.
But it didn't end well, and Katniss was left heartbroken. Sophia wished she could take on that pain for her.
"Mom, let's not think too much. The child will be ours, and we just need to raise them well."
Seeing Sophia's guilty expression, Katniss changed the subject and picked out some newborn socks.
The sales assistant introduced many items needed for newborns, and she was fascinated, filling the shopping cart.
After paying, the mall's delivery staff helped them load the items into the car, and then she drove Sophia home.
After selecting these items, Sophia felt much better and was filled with anticipation for the baby's arrival.
As the car exited the underground parking lot, Katniss saw a woman in her forties clutching her chest and slowly collapsing near the mall.
The woman collapsed in a blind spot at the mall entrance, unseen by the passersby.
Katniss quickly parked the car by the roadside and unbuckled her seatbelt. "Mom, call an ambulance quickly. I'll go check on her."
"Okay." Sophia swiftly dialed 911 and then followed her out.
The woman clutching her chest was fumbling for something on her body, but she couldn't control her movements to grab it accurately.
Katniss approached and, with great difficulty, squatted beside the woman. "Do you have any medication on you?"
The woman nodded quickly, her eyes filled with a desire to survive.
Katniss turned out all her pockets and finally found a nitroglycerin pill, placing it in the woman's mouth. The woman swallowed it desperately without even drinking water.
Within seconds, the woman felt some relief, her body gradually relaxing as she lay on the ground, looking at Katniss.
She moved her hand, seemingly wanting to say something, but Katniss immediately stopped her. "We've already called an ambulance. Don't move or say anything."
Hearing this, the woman stopped moving but held Katniss's hand tightly.
Ten minutes later, the ambulance arrived. Katniss intended to leave, but the woman wouldn't let go of her hand, so she and Sophia accompanied her to the hospital.
At the hospital, the emergency room staff, realizing Katniss and Sophia were not the patient's family, searched the woman's bag for her phone to contact her family.
However, the foreign doctors couldn't figure out the woman's phone, so they asked Katniss for help.
Only then did Katniss realize that the woman was from the same country as them.
The woman's phone had few contacts, and she dialed a number labeled "Rebellious Son."
The person on the other end quickly answered, and she explained the situation.
Upon hearing that the phone's owner was hospitalized, the person immediately hung up and rushed over.
Twenty minutes later, the woman had completed her examination. It was an old heart condition, but timely medication had saved her, and she was out of danger.
The doctors advised the family to avoid leaving the patient alone in the future, as it could be dangerous.
Katniss temporarily noted these instructions for the family and moved the woman to a regular ward.
Before they could settle in, the ward door suddenly burst open.
Emory rushed in, heading straight for the bed. "Mom, you're not dead, right?"
The woman on the bed, though weak, raised her hand and slapped him upon hearing this.
"I'll definitely be angered to death by you in this lifetime. No illness can take my life!"
Despite the harsh words, Emory's concern and worry were evident. He examined his mother, Natalia Ruth, ensuring she was okay, and added, "When you do want to die, let me know, and I'll make it happen."
Listening to their conversation, Katniss almost choked. They must have a mother-son relationship; otherwise, they wouldn't say such things.
"These are the people who saved me." Natalia turned her head, looking at Katniss and Sophia, who had been completely ignored by Emory.
Emory turned around. "Thank you... "
"Mr. Buckner." Katniss gave him a polite smile. "What a coincidence, saving your mother."
"Katniss?" Emory exclaimed, his gaze falling on her large belly. "So you're not fat, you're pregnant?"
The previously harmonious atmosphere suddenly became awkward due to his words.
She wasn't actually fat. Even in the late stages of pregnancy, it was just her belly that was prominent, with only a slight fullness on her face.
But she was afraid of the cold and wore a heavy down jacket, making her look bulkier.
"And a pregnant woman too," Natalia finally noticed Katniss's condition. "You look so young, about to be a mother."
Katniss smiled and shook her head. "Not that young. I'm already thirty."
"That's still very young." Natalia glared at Emory. "He's thirty-five, and he doesn't even have a girlfriend, let alone a child."
Emory, unbothered by the jab, rolled his eyes and said, "Mom, I know Katniss well. We're very close. Didn't you always urge me to find a wife and have a child for you? How about this, I'll be the Godfather of Katniss's child, and you can help look after the baby?"
Katniss stared at Emory in shock.
Sophia was also surprised that Emory would say such a thing.
She didn't know how close Katniss and Emory were, but they must have met after moving abroad, at most a month or so.
And he wanted to be the child's Godfather?
"You bastard, I told you you had a problem with your sexual function, and you wouldn't admit it. Can't even have a child?" Natalia looked at Emory sympathetically. "The top floor of the clinic next door specializes in male issues. You should check it out."
Emory's face darkened. "Who said I have a problem? I'll find someone to give you eleven kids!"
"Eleven kids might be possible, but they might not be yours," Natalia retorted .
Then she turned to Katniss. "Are you very close with Emory?"
Emory gave Katniss a look, signaling her to say they were close.
"Not particularly close, but we get along well," Katniss didn't want to embarrass Emory, especially since he was now the biggest investor in White Corporation. She had to keep him happy.
"Are you close enough for him to be the Godfather of your unborn child?" Natalia looked at Katniss expectantly.
