Chapter 383 "I'm not even dead, why are you crying?"
The doctor who drew Tristan's blood was not from this hospital but was specifically involved in drug development.
After drawing the blood, the doctor left. Emory and Nicholas leaned against a tree, watching Tristan's back for a long time without speaking.
Until Tristan got up and said, "Don't stay here, go back. I'll notify you if there's any situation."
As he spoke, he stepped out of the shade, his shadow elongated by the orange glow of the streetlamp, then leaped into the next circle of light.
He hardly slept and went to Evie's ward. In the latter half of the night, Evie slept more soundly, and he watched for a long time before leaving.
He didn't return to Katniss's ward but took out his phone and made a call.
"Check if Mr. McGinnis from Velvet City and Mr. Soderberg from the neighboring city have had any recent activities."
"Why check on them?" Ryan was very surprised.
"Previously, Travis took evidence against Mr. McGinnis and Mr. Soderberg to secure a political-business cooperation project. That evidence must have been given to him by Duke, because Duke held their evidence and dared to settle in Velvet City so openly."
Tristan had been thinking all afternoon about how to uncover Duke's hideout.
In the situation where Nelson's group disregarded the hostages' lives, Duke still managed to escape and was now missing, which meant someone was protecting him.
Ryan quickly understood his meaning, "I'll check it out right away!"
After hanging up the phone, Tristan returned to Katniss's ward. Perhaps too tired and tense, he quickly fell asleep beside Katniss.
But his sleep was restless, filled with various dreams for two or three hours.
Halfway through a dream, it suddenly changed.
Around seven in the morning, when Katniss woke up, she saw him frowning. Just as she was about to smooth his brow, he suddenly grabbed her wrist.
Tristan looked at Katniss with a vigilant gaze, and it took him a while to react and quickly let go of her.
"What's wrong with you?" Katniss touched his forehead.
He shook his head, "Had a nightmare. Yesterday's events... I'm also scared."
His words made Katniss's heart stiffen. Who wouldn't be scared?
But she knew Tristan wasn't afraid of Duke.
He was afraid because Evie was in their hands.
"It's all over now. Let's ask if we can be discharged and take Evie home."
She was eager to leave this place.
Watching her get out of bed, her hurried back, Tristan's mind went blank for a few seconds.
He frowned, scrutinizing every inch of the ward, and only after a long time did his brow relax, and he got out of bed.
Evie could be discharged. Katniss asked Tristan to handle the discharge procedures and then went to Evie's ward.
Evie, who was already awake, had no smile on her face. She looked around with wide eyes.
Suddenly hearing the door open, she was startled and burrowed into Sophia's arms.
"Evie, don't be afraid, it's Mommy." Sophia gently patted Evie's back, softly comforting her.
Katniss came over and softly coaxed Evie. Only then did Evie lift her head from Sophia's arms.
After looking at Katniss for a few seconds, her mouth suddenly quivered, and tears fell instantly.
Evie's crying was particularly heartbreaking, raising her little arms for Katniss to hold her.
Evie's soft body was embraced by Katniss, and her heart melted immediately.
Evie's small hands clutched Katniss's collar, her head constantly rubbing against her chin and cheek.
Half an hour later, Tristan completed the discharge procedures.
Perhaps because she was back with Katniss, Evie, though still anxious and uneasy, was much more at ease than when she was with Sophia.
Back home, Tristan intended to take Evie, but Evie clung only to Katniss.
"I'll take care of her. You didn't sleep all night, do you want to take a nap?"
How could Tristan sleep? But his phone kept vibrating in his pocket, so he went upstairs.
As soon as he entered the study, he answered the call.
"Mr. Forbes, I found out that last night, in the coastal area, Mr. Soderberg went there to pick up someone, very mysteriously..."
Sophia sat on the crawling mat, watching Evie nestled in Katniss's arms, holding her favorite little duck, but still looking glum, feeling heartbroken.
"It's my fault, I didn't take good care of Evie."
"It's not your fault." Katniss moved closer to her with Evie in her arms, handing her a tissue, "We live in a peaceful place. Compared to those dark forces, we are like unarmed people. Once they target us, we can't fight back. Fortunately, no one was hurt this time. I just hope Duke gets caught soon so we can stop living in fear."
Sophia had never seen such a scene. She was terrified at the sight of those guns!
She didn't sleep all night, and even without holding Evie, her mind was filled with gunshots.
When she and Evie were sent down the mountain, they heard continuous gunfire from the mountain and helicopters flying overhead.
"This time, you were also frightened." How could Katniss blame Sophia?
She had seen the surveillance footage from the community. Those people only wanted to take Evie.
Sophia insisted on going with Evie.
Sophia was risking her life to protect Evie, insisting on going together or not at all!
Fortunately, she followed. Otherwise, Evie, in the hands of a group of men, would have been even more frightened and might have caused more trouble.
"I had only one thought in my mind, to protect Evie. I didn't have time to be scared. Afterward... the more I thought about it, the more scared I became."
Sophia sighed repeatedly, leaning against the sofa, feeling drained.
She had lost all her energy from yesterday, and now, back home, she couldn't even walk properly.
In the quiet living room, the two of them watched over Evie, falling into silence.
Life seemed to have returned to normal, but the fear in their hearts couldn't be healed in the short term.
For two consecutive days, Katniss didn't go to work.
Besides having Ryan investigate Duke's whereabouts, Tristan listened to Emory's reports on the raid on Duke's hideout.
On Duke's island, there were many laboratories, and the products from there were sent worldwide.
The latest developed drug had been obtained by Interpol and sent for research.
Several researchers of the drug had been arrested for investigation.
The drug test results, along with Duke's whereabouts, were sent to Tristan.
He told Katniss and then went to see Emory. As soon as they met, Emory almost cried.
"I'm not dead, why are you crying?" Tristan sat down on the sofa, his tall and relaxed figure exuding a sense of ease, yet mixed with seriousness, "Just say it, don't cry."
Emory sat down beside him, "Let's not panic. Whether this thing works or not is still uncertain. Even if it does, the researchers are working on an antidote. It's not unsolvable!"
Tristan clenched his jaw, the lines of his profile tight, and he glared at Emory, his thin lips curving into a smile, "Stop talking nonsense. Just say it!"
