Chapter 399 What Am I Going to Do with You?
"I see, you go ahead." Katniss turned and sat on the steps, her hands tightly clasped together.
Looking at Tristan, who was waiting for Maddy to have her check-up not far away, he stood just a few steps away from Maddy, his gaze never leaving her.
That kind of gaze used to be on her, but now it was given to another woman right in front of her.
"Mommy!" Evie suddenly ran over, screaming excitedly, gesturing with something in her hand.
Katniss grabbed her hand and saw that she was holding a puppet, although made of wood, it was polished very smoothly.
"Where did you get this?"
Nicholas walked over and said, "I gave it to her. I saw there were some woodworkers in the village, so I made one for her in my spare time."
"Did you hear what the doctor said just now?" Emory dared to come over only after Nicholas arrived. "What are you planning to do? Stay here to watch Tristan get married, or... leave?"
Returning to this heavy topic, Katniss's clear eyes dimmed a bit. "How many days until their wedding?"
"Six days," Nicholas said, "I heard the Nguyen family thought it over and decided to have a big wedding after all. After all, the Nguyen family only has this one daughter, and they just received money from you..."
They used to say they wouldn't have a big wedding, but now they were. It was ridiculous that they were using her money to hold a wedding!
Katniss lowered her eyes, her hands running through her hair. She couldn't leave.
But she had to find a way to stop Tristan and Maddy from getting married!
But this was a despicable thing to do; she had to come up with a foolproof and very reasonable plan.
But in an instant, all her hopes were dashed, and the negative emotions she had been feeling for days surged up, her mind in chaos.
"I'll take care of Evie tonight." Seeing her like this, Emory took on the responsibility of looking after Evie, "You're emotionally unstable, and if you don't take good care of Evie and she gets sick, it won't be good."
Katniss couldn't refute this reason. She hadn't been in a good state recently, having trouble falling asleep at night, and once she did fall asleep, it was very deep.
There were two times when she woke up to find Evie had kicked off the blanket, so now she had a bit of a runny nose.
She was in an even worse state today, so she let Emory take over, "But she must sleep here."
Emory and Nicholas had been staying at a small hotel in the nearby town, only coming to the village during the day.
She couldn't let them take Evie over there.
Emory immediately agreed, "No problem, as long as you let me take care of her, she can even sleep in your room."
After saying that, he picked up Evie, "I'll take her out for a walk. Since we arrived, you haven't taken her around the area. The weather is so nice..."
As he spoke, he had already taken Evie away.
The village was large, and Maddy's house was in the farthest corner.
It was far from where Katniss was staying, and Emory was sweating and panting heavily by the time he carried Evie there.
After stopping in an open area near Maddy's house, he kept sending messages to Tristan, urging him to come back quickly.
Tristan hadn't replied until Emory said he had taken Evie out.
After a while, he saw Tristan's heavy and laborious figure hurrying over.
Seeing Evie in Emory's arms, the usual calm in his eyes rippled, and a surge of emotion welled up from deep within.
"Can you handle it?" Emory took two steps towards him, "I still need to help. Otherwise, when Evie can walk, you won't be able to hold her."
Tristan dropped the stick, wiped his hands on his clothes, and before he could figure out how to hold Evie, or if he could hold her, Evie had already reached out, leaning her body towards him, giving him a sweet smile.
Evie babbled a few incomprehensible words, her upper body already leaning on Tristan's chest.
Her chubby little hands tightly grasped Tristan's collar, saying a few more words.
"You just hold her, I'll support her, don't worry, she won't fall." Emory gestured for him to hold her.
Tristan had enough strength in his arms; holding her wasn't a problem.
But Evie was lively, and if she started to fidget in his arms, he might not be quick enough to react and could drop her.
Fortunately, Emory's hands were steadily supporting Evie's back, watching as Evie turned her face to kiss Tristan's cheek a few times.
Evie made incomprehensible sounds while poking Tristan's cheek with her finger and picking at his lips, not feeling unfamiliar at all.
After playing for over an hour, Emory took Evie back for lunch.
In the afternoon, he put Evie down for a nap.
Katniss sat in the bay window on the second floor, staring blankly for the entire afternoon.
By evening, she couldn't make sense of anything, her head aching terribly, so she went downstairs to get some alcohol, thinking that maybe getting drunk and venting some emotions would give her the strength to keep going.
Ryan saw her taking the alcohol upstairs and felt uneasy, so he secretly went to find Nicholas and Emory.
"Ms. Grey took some alcohol upstairs. Will she be okay?"
Emory looked outside. It was already very dark, past nine o'clock, and Katniss probably couldn't sleep.
He waved his hand, "Why don't you keep an eye on her at the door, just in case something happens?"
"No need for him to keep watch." Nicholas immediately said, "Go back to your room, and don't come out even if you hear any noise."
Ryan shivered, as if something big was about to happen.
Nicholas gave Emory a look, and Emory immediately understood, "Yes, you go back, we'll take care of Katniss. Don't you have work tomorrow?"
Going back just meant going back to his room. Ryan's room was on the southernmost side of the first floor.
Although he didn't understand what Nicholas and Emory were up to, Ryan knew they wouldn't harm Katniss, so he went back.
The next second, Nicholas called Tristan, "Katniss has been drinking, aren't you going to do something?"
The call was quickly hung up.
He had the Nguyen family send him over by car, and in just over ten minutes, he arrived at Katniss's place.
Seeing the weak light from the second-floor window, he paused before entering the house.
Nicholas was already waiting, "Evie was just put to sleep by Emory. I checked on Katniss, she's passed out drunk, you want to go up and see?"
Tristan's gaze fell on the stairs, just the second floor, but it felt like an insurmountable climb.
"Come, I'll help you." Nicholas walked over to support him.
A few minutes later, a slender hand pushed open the bedroom door, and the figure on the bed bathed in the light.
She was holding a half-empty bottle of alcohol, her cheeks flushed, lying there without any semblance of dignity.
Tristan sat on the edge of the bed, his lips tightly pressed together as he looked at her drunken state, something he had never seen before.
He raised his hand, his fingertips gently brushing her cheek, but the low sensitivity of his fingertips made it hard to feel the softness of her skin.
Katniss murmured, slowly opening her eyes.
In her drunken, clear eyes, Tristan's familiar face was reflected, and her tears fell instantly.
"You're going to marry someone else? You're not going to care about me and Evie anymore? What am I supposed to do? What am I supposed to do with you?"
