Chapter 396 How Can He Get Married?
The small mountain village was relatively clean and elegant, with brick houses lined up one after another, facing the sea and backed by mountains. A gust of wind blew, causing the decorations to sway.
The glaring color of the decorations was reflected in Evie's eyes. She called out and reached out her hand to touch them.
Katniss walked slowly, her gaze fixed on the house at the end of the corner, where a red carpet was laid out in front of the door.
That was Maddy's house.
People were constantly coming and going, each with a smile on their face.
"I want him to repay me by marrying me!"
These words echoed vividly in Katniss's ears. She tightened her grip on Evie and stood motionless at the street corner, watching.
"Ms. Grey..." Ryan saw that she hadn't moved for a long time and slowly walked over, speaking sluggishly, "I've been busy with the project these past two days and haven't paid much attention to Mr. Forbes... I only heard this morning that Mr. Forbes is going to marry Maddy."
Katniss turned to look at him, her eyes filled with suppressed heartache and absurdity. "How can he get married? He..."
Although their wedding didn't happen, they already had Evie!
Even though they had signed the divorce agreement back then, they had reconciled!
They... Countless words were stuck in her throat, unable to come out. The last time she mentioned bigamy was just to deceive Maddy.
"The wedding is in ten days." Ryan didn't dare to look at Katniss. "I heard it won't be a big event because they don't have much money, especially since Mr. Forbes has limited mobility."
"I don't want to know the reasons, and I don't want to know the details!" Katniss's frustration and heartache couldn't be vented, and her tone was uncontrollably harsh. "Contact the doctor and have him come over to give Tristan a thorough examination."
Ryan quickly said, "Ms. Grey, that's not easy to arrange. Mr. Forbes doesn't allow strangers to approach him now. If a doctor suddenly comes to examine him, he definitely won't agree, and the Nguyen family is very protective and won't let us in easily!"
"I won't let him marry someone else!" Katniss didn't dare to take another step forward, not wanting to see him and Maddy receiving blessings from others.
The house Katniss bought in the small mountain village was a two-story building. From the top floor, one could see the sea view and the sunrise over the mountains.
Ryan had planned the interior decoration and layout, with a place for Evie to play, similar to the level of protection at home.
After returning home, Katniss placed Evie in the playpen and sat on the carpet, watching Evie in silence.
The memories of accompanying Evie with Tristan played like a movie in her mind.
Nicholas and Emory walked in and saw her sitting there in a daze. Both of them felt a pang of sympathy.
"No wonder Tristan refuses to come and see her, and he doesn't allow us to relay her situation to him." Nicholas sniffed, feeling distressed. "As friends, we feel heartbroken for her. How much more so for Tristan?"
Emory looked at her for a while and then turned to Nicholas. "Nicholas, we mustn't make things worse with good intentions. Do you think... if we tell Katniss the truth, she might feel a bit better?"
An endless silence spread between them, and neither could determine which pain was lighter.
"This is so infuriating." Emory turned and punched the wall hard. "One day, I'll go abroad and beat Nelson's head in! If it weren't for that bastard, how could we have been caught off guard?"
"Stop dwelling on the past. Let's think about how to carry out the task Tristan entrusted to us."
Nicholas patted his shoulder. "You've already offended Katniss, so you might as well go all the way. You go and tell her."
Emory pushed him away. "Are you serious? Do you want me to never return to Velvet City? If I offend Katniss too much, my mom won't even let me in the house!"
The two of them argued quietly, pushing each other forward.
"You don't need to come over; you can speak from there." Katniss had already seen them, her clear eyes watching them through the hollowed-out cabinet in the hallway.
Emory peeked out from behind the cabinet and said, "I'll go first. Tristan is getting married. Nicholas will tell you the rest."
Then he quickly retreated.
Nicholas hesitated for a moment, then mustered the courage to walk up to Katniss. "Katniss, waiting like this isn't a solution. You've even brought the child here. Haven't you thought about what to do if Tristan never remembers you and falls in love with Maddy? What will you do then?"
"I haven't thought about it," Katniss answered decisively. "I won't allow that to happen."
Emory poked his head out. "But it's already happening. For the past three months, Maddy has been taking care of Tristan wholeheartedly, and she has a deep-rooted place in his heart. Even if you tell Tristan everything, if he has no memory of you and his heart is with Maddy, will you be happy?"
His words were as blunt as a scorching fireball, roasting Katniss's heart.
Katniss retorted, "Watching him marry and have children with another woman, spending the rest of his life with her, will that make me happy? What if he regains his memory later? If he's already married to someone else and I didn't stop it, won't he..."
"His memory won't come back!" Nicholas blurted out, then quickly covered his mouth, realizing his mistake.
He didn't want to remember; who could force him?
"What do you mean?" Katniss stood up, staring at him intently, a thought forming in her mind. "Is it Duke's medication affecting his memory, or..."
Emory immediately interrupted her near-accurate guess. "Regardless of the reason for Tristan's condition, he's now a disabled person. Where is the glory of the past? Why do you keep holding on to him? You have plenty of men around you. With your abilities, finding another one is easy. Why torture yourself?"
"I care about him as a person, not his past glory. Whether he's disabled or lost at sea, I'll only recognize him in this lifetime!"
Katniss firmly declared her determination. "From today on, if either of you tries to persuade me otherwise, we won't be friends anymore!"
With that, she picked up Evie and went upstairs.
After a few steps, she couldn't hold back her tears.
She kissed Evie's cheek and, after returning to the room, held her tightly, whispering, "Evie understands Mommy, right? Even if he's dead, Mommy can't let go..."
Outside the house, Tristan leaned against the cold wall, holding a stick, listening to the argument inside.
The veins on his muscular hands stood out, and his pale fingertips almost crushed the stick.
His tightly clenched jawline was clear, struggling to resist the urge to rush in and hold Katniss and Evie.
He moved slightly, stumbling away step by step.
