Chapter 370 Living Without Looking at Katniss's Face
"Sir, that woman may be ruthless, but she's still a bit foolish in front of Tristan."
The servant pondered for a moment and said, "Otherwise, how could Synergy Global Corporation have fallen into her hands, yet she is still being forced to retreat step by step?"
Although they had thoroughly investigated Eudora and believed that with her temperament, she wouldn't take being expelled from Synergy Global Corporation lying down.
But they didn't think Eudora could gain any advantage in front of the thriving Tristan and Katniss.
The man raised his hand to pinch his brow, but the next second, he suddenly smiled, "It's been a long time since I've heard you praise someone like this. You're making me want to meet Tristan."
The servant quickly nodded, "Sir, please think twice. It's not worth risking your life for a Tristan."
"Why not?" The man turned around and asked, "This matter concerns the new drug we've just developed. Once this drug succeeds, I can make a lot of money again. Causing such a big commotion proves that my research is successful and makes those who want to catch me go crazy. How interesting is that?"
The more he spoke, the more excited he became, and he waved his hand directly, "Make arrangements, I want to take action personally."
Katniss didn't expect that after making the news of Tristan marrying into the Grey family public, the busiest person wasn't Tristan. It was her. White Corporation received many invitations for cooperation, and various projects were progressing smoothly, with cooperation projects coming one after another.
At the same time, she received a call from Rupert, whose store had opened.
He had asked her to come on the opening day a few days ago, but she was too busy to make it.
Now Rupert, having learned through the internet that she even had a daughter, called several times in one day, asking her to bring the child to the store for a bowl of pasta.
As an uncle, Rupert hadn't seen his niece yet.
Katniss went with Tristan, very low-key, on a Monday evening.
Rupert's store was near the commercial street, with a large flow of people at noon.
Most people went home in the evening, and fewer people were coming for pasta compared to noon.
Rupert knew they were coming and reserved the only small private room.
Katniss got out of the car holding Evie, who was coming outside for the first time and was curiously looking around with wide eyes.
Inside the store, Jessica quickly came out, leaving her cleaning cloth behind. "Katniss, you're here? Come in, Rupert is still busy in the kitchen."
She had just finished speaking when she saw Tristan parking the car and coming over.
But she only glanced at him, not even greeting him, and led Katniss into the store. "Rupert knew you were coming and prepared a few dishes. He's quite good at cooking, you should try them later."
"OK," Katniss responded, feeling a bit inexplicably resistant to Jessica's enthusiasm. After entering the store, she took the opportunity to look around and wait for Tristan.
The store was quite spacious, with a quarter of the space used for the kitchen, a small private room, and about twenty tables and chairs.
It was very clean and looked very comfortable.
"Katniss, the private room is here, and two dishes are already on the table." Jessica brought a pot of water and a disposable cup.
After entering the private room, she poured a cup of water for Katniss and then focused on Evie.
"This little girl is so pretty, she looks just like you, Katniss." She reached out to hold Evie, but Evie, used to staying at home, didn't want to be held by strangers.
"She's just shy." Jessica sat next to Katniss, "Katniss, is there anything you want to eat? I'll tell Rupert to add it now."
Katniss, while observing if Evie, who was out for the first time, would be uncomfortable, responded to Jessica, "Nothing in particular, just tell Rupert to make a few less, enough to eat."
Hearing this, Jessica generously said, "You rarely come, we couldn't entertain you well when we were poor, but now we can. We must let you eat and drink well."
There was a hint of pride and showing off in her words.
Although even with the pasta restaurant, they were not as capable or wealthy as Katniss.
But at least they didn't have to worry about food and drink, with a minimum daily net profit of a thousand dollars in the first few days of opening.
At this rate, buying a house in Velvet City in less than two years wouldn't be a problem.
The key was, this pasta restaurant was their own business, and her generosity towards Katniss was another way of showing off.
They were equals, on the same level!
She was no longer living under Katniss's shadow.
Katniss saw through her little thoughts clearly, but she came for Rupert today.
After listening to Jessica's chatter for more than half an hour in the private room, Rupert and Ember finally appeared.
The two of them brought four or five dishes, and Ember went back to the kitchen twice more.
For just a few people, there were a total of ten dishes and a soup.
"Katniss, Tristan." Rupert greeted with a smile, his eyes always on Evie. He walked over and took out a small jewelry box from his pocket.
Jessica's smile instantly faded a bit.
"I heard you had a daughter, so I specially bought this from the jewelry store. I heard gold is good for children."
Rupert opened the small box, revealing a gold bracelet and a gold lock on a red string, meant to be worn around the neck.
The two items together were estimated to be worth over ten thousand dollars.
He wanted to put them on Evie, but paused and put them back in the box, "Katniss, you put them on her."
"You do it," Katniss said, holding Evie's chubby little arm, rolling up a small sleeve, and handing it to Rupert, "Evie, be good, let me put the bracelet on you."
Evie made a sound, her big eyes watching as Rupert put the bracelet on her hand. She scratched for a while before accurately grabbing the bracelet.
After the bracelet and the gold lock were on, Evie made two more sounds and kicked her little legs.
Then she kept looking down, playing with the gold bracelet and gold lock on her arm.
Rupert was about to talk to Tristan, but noticed there was only one cup of water on the table, in front of Katniss.
He immediately turned to Jessica and said, "Look at you, busy all day. Go get a cup and pour some water for Tristan."
Jessica was already unhappy because he had prepared the bracelet and lock for Evie without saying a word.
She replied slowly, "I just thought 'Tristan' is used to drinking coffee and might not like the water from our small shop."
Wasn't it enough for her to serve Katniss alone? Did she have to serve Tristan, too?
She saw it: Tristan had married into the Grey family, and now Katniss was strong because of her abilities, having nothing to do with Tristan!
"Say less!" Rupert glared at her unhappily, then went to get a disposable cup to pour water for Tristan. "Tristan, I saw on the news last time that you had a car accident. Are you all healed now?"
Tristan took the water and nodded slightly, "It's nothing serious."
"That's good. Now that you two are doing well, Jessica and I are also doing well. Let's all live happily together." Rupert said with a sincere smile.
His attitude was genuine, so Tristan talked with him a bit more, providing some advice on how to expand and attract stable resources.
Although everyone ordered takeout now, ordering pasta for delivery was more expensive than buying it in the store. He suggested Rupert hire a part-time delivery person to work only four hours at noon each day.
Create a group and add all the customers who have eaten there, allowing them to place orders in the group at the same price as in the store.
Rupert listened excitedly, seriously discussing it with Tristan.
Throughout, Ember didn't speak to Katniss, silently eating.
It wasn't until Katniss went to the restroom, leaving Evie with Tristan, that Ember quickly followed her out.
After Katniss finished in the restroom, Ember approached her, "Katniss, can I discuss something with you?"
Katniss washed her hands and looked at her through the mirror, "What is it?"
"Now that Rupert doesn't lack money, and I don't gamble anymore, there's no need for us to be so estranged. Let's put the past behind us. Can I follow you in the future?"
Ember had had enough of Jessica.
Since the store opened, Jessica had become very arrogant, doing nothing in the store except collecting money.
Cleaning, tidying tables, and washing dishes in the kitchen were all Ember's work.
The key was, she didn't get paid.
She had asked Jessica several times for a monthly salary, but Jessica always found excuses, saying, "Why talk about money in a family? Just focus on your work, and ask me if you need anything."
Jessica would also persuade Rupert, saying that if they gave her money, she might gamble again and bankrupt the store.
As a result, Ember had only three hundred dollars in total.
Working for free, not getting paid, who could stand this?
If she wasn't getting paid anyway, she might as well go to Katniss's place and enjoy herself. At least she wouldn't have to work.
"No." Katniss refused decisively, "Whatever the lawyer's statement said at the time, that's how it will be now."
Hearing this, Ember was unhappy, "Katniss, you're heartless. You can support a stepmother and a man, but you can't support me?"
"I transfer filial support to your card every month. From what you're saying, the card should be in Jessica's hands. You deal with it yourself."
Katniss wiped her hands and added, "If you really can't solve it, I can ask Jessica for it later."
After all, it was her filial support for Ember, and it was indeed unreasonable for Jessica to take it all.
But clearly, Ember didn't care about the two thousand dollars. "If I follow you, you won't even have to pay me filial support anymore. Isn't that the best of both worlds? With Jessica's temper, do you think she'll give it to you?"
"She will." Katniss said without thinking, "If she doesn't, you can get a new card, and I'll transfer it to the new one."
There were plenty of ways, and she left no room for Ember. After speaking, she left.
Ember gritted her teeth, feeling more and more aggrieved.
It was all because of Sophia. She held the position of Katniss's mother, and having two mothers in the family would make people talk badly!
Since only one could stay, why should it be Sophia?
No, if Katniss didn't work, she had to find Sophia.
The meal made Katniss's impression of Jessica even worse.
