Chapter 430 Causing a Scene at Katniss's Wedding
Seeing Tristan's eyes suddenly turn cold, as if covered with frost.
Adelaide quickly patted his arm and said, "Don't worry, that's not what I meant. Katniss was forced into it back then. I saw the feelings between you two. I won't disagree with her marrying you just because Evie isn't your child. I just can't tolerate her taking away the Forbes family's assets."
"You are really being excessive and hurtful." Tristan avoided her hand. "Don't you know Katniss? If something had really happened between her and Samuel that night, do you think she would still be alive today? Would she still be with me?"
Perhaps Katniss would strive to live for Sophia.
But she would never allow herself, having lost her purity, to stay by Tristan's side.
She would never do something like making Tristan a father to another man's child!
"I think I know her well." Adelaide lowered her head and said in a deep voice, "But ever since I did that to her, she has been utterly disappointed in me. She seems like a different person. She disappeared for a while and came back with a child. How do you expect me to turn understanding into trust?"
Tristan glanced at Katniss in the kitchen and said coldly, "You don't consider her one of your own, so you never see things from her perspective. Let Royce take you to the wedding tomorrow. Katniss and I will leave first."
With that, he got up and walked towards the kitchen. Adelaide looked anxious and wanted to say something, but was afraid Katniss would hear.
Katniss chatted with the people in the kitchen for a bit, mentioning baby food, and ended up talking a bit more to get some advice.
But before she could finish, Tristan came over, grabbed her wrist, and said, "Let's go back."
"What?" Katniss was taken aback, looking at him in confusion.
Before she could react, he pulled her out of the kitchen.
Her eyes met Adelaide's evasive gaze for just two seconds, and she understood it had something to do with Adelaide.
She changed her shoes at the entrance and silently followed Tristan to the car.
It was obvious that if Tristan was upset, it was either about her or Evie.
But she couldn't figure out what issue Adelaide could have with her and Evie.
Looking at Tristan, it seemed he didn't plan to say anything, considering the wedding was tomorrow and she would still have to face Adelaide.
It wouldn't be good to make things too tense; everything could wait until after the wedding.
"I just added the old house chef on Facebook. I'll ask them about the food they mentioned earlier." Katniss, unable to use her phone while driving, tossed it to Tristan. "You ask them to send a tutorial."
Tristan glanced at her, then picked up her phone to send a message.
After sending it, he put the phone back and looked at Katniss again, making sure she wouldn't ask anything.
His heart wasn't much happier, the bitterness tightening his throat.
Frowning, he looked out the car window, the midday sun casting a harsh light below his prominent nose.
His deep eyes grew even darker.
When they returned, Sophia noticed Tristan's displeased expression and quietly asked Katniss a couple of questions.
Katniss said, "Maybe it's because of the wedding, and he had some conflict with Adelaide. Don't worry, it's nothing."
She didn't let Sophia worry too much, reassured her, and then started preparing lunch.
Sophia's phone suddenly rang. She glanced at it, frowned, and walked out to answer it.
"What's the point of this? If Katniss isn't well, it won't benefit you either. If you go down, you'll get nothing. What? Are you kidding me? Using this to threaten me? I haven't told Katniss because I don't want to embarrass you. Do you really think I'm afraid of you?"
After a few angry words, Sophia hung up the phone.
Turning around, she saw Katniss holding Evie behind her, almost dropping her phone in shock.
"Katniss, the pot in the kitchen is boiling. I need to check on it!" Sophia tried to leave but was blocked by Katniss.
"Who called you?" Katniss had heard some fragments and knew it had something to do with her.
Sophia hesitated, then seemed to make a decision and said, "An old friend. Let me finish cooking first, and then I'll tell you."
She wasn't good at lying, and her ears turned red after saying that.
Katniss stepped aside, and Sophia almost fled.
Watching her relieved back enter the kitchen, Katniss frowned, holding Evie as she returned to the living room. She had just sat down when she saw Sophia's phone light up.
It was a text message, and she could see the beginning of it.
[I don't want to talk about Katniss...]
Katniss's eyes narrowed, looking at the phone number with no name saved.
She picked up the phone and saw that Sophia had exchanged many messages with this number, starting a few days ago.
From the content, the other person didn't reveal their name, but Katniss immediately guessed it was Ember.
Last time, Ember had asked her to buy a villa. When she refused, Ember had turned to Sophia.
The implication was that Sophia, having been with Katniss for so long, must have saved a lot of money from her. Ember wanted Sophia to buy her a villa.
Moreover, she used Katniss's secret as leverage. Their messages were very discreet, hinting that this matter would affect Katniss.
So Sophia repeatedly reminded Ember not to be unreasonable, warning that it would lead to misfortune. But Ember's response was, [If you care so much about Katniss, buy me a villa.]
Ember kept mentioning the villa, making Katniss almost laugh in anger.
As she read, another message from Ember came in.
[At 2 PM, I'll be at Moonlit Café. If you don't come, I'll crash Katniss's wedding tomorrow!]
Katniss's face fell. She deleted the last two messages and put the phone back.
Silently, she went into the kitchen to help Sophia.
After lunch, she found an excuse to meet Ember.
But Tristan also came down in a hurry, and they met at the entrance.
"Where are you going?" Katniss waved her car keys at him. "I'll give you a ride."
"No need, I'm going to see Emory. got some business." Tristan changed his shoes, placing his hands on the entrance cabinet, enclosing her in his arms. "We're getting married tomorrow. Where are you planning to go without saying a word? Are you thinking of running away?"
She poked Tristan's chest with her finger. "If I wanted to run, would I go through all the trouble of finding you? I could have left you in that village, watching you marry Maddy."
Mentioning Maddy, Tristan's eyes narrowed. "When it comes to that village, all you talk about is Maddy. You've been jealous for so long, you can let it go now."
"Stop flattering yourself." Katniss snorted, but couldn't help asking, "Why are you seeing Emory? Is there news about Lucas?"
