Chapter 308 No Need to Talk
The Forbes family is in chaos, and so is the White family.
Tristan getting close to her would definitely attract the attention of the White family.
Others in the business world might be wary of whether Tristan could make a comeback, but not Beau!
If Tristan wanted to get close to her, it meant he was siding with Benjamin.
Beau would definitely give him trouble.
Even Katniss understood this, and Tristan surely knew it too, yet he still did it.
For a moment, Katniss couldn't describe her feelings.
"Then, after this drink, I won't have any more." He pointed to the drink in his glass, a mischievous smile playing on his lips, "I'll listen to you."
The light sentence was extremely flirtatious.
They were sitting close, and she could even smell the fresh, pleasant scent on him.
She pursed her lips slightly, her gaze falling on the clear veins on the back of his hand, tracing them up to where they disappeared into his forearm.
"Our White Corporation and Synergy Global Corporation are arch-enemies. Is it appropriate for Ms. Grey to be so close with Mr. Forbes?"
After a while, someone couldn't help but question.
"Sitting together means we're close?" Seeing Tristan about to say something, she raised her hand under the table to press down on the back of his hand.
Her soft hand lightly rested on his, as if it was resting on his heart.
He turned to look at her seriously, her short hair tucked behind her ear, her profile perfectly sculpted.
When she got serious, her eyes emitted a sharpness, and her lips moved, silencing the person.
"Then you were just drinking with him earlier, does that mean you're also very close?"
"Ms. Grey, you're being so confrontational. We were just making a casual comment." Someone interjected, implying that Katniss was being too petty.
Katniss sneered, "We're all adults here, why pretend to be naive? I know your intentions well. If you don't like me or Beau, there's no need to hide it. Prove yourself at work. A bunch of men nitpicking here, it's pathetic."
Her words made the men in their forties and fifties in the room blush.
They had to admit, her style was quite similar to Tristan's!
Who dared to speak sarcastically? If you have an opinion, show it with your strength, don't mess around with nonsense.
The meal made everyone uncomfortable, and for the first time, they realized that the newly appointed Ms. Grey was not to be trifled with.
Katniss didn't enjoy the meal much either, because Tristan was sitting sideways next to her, his muscular leg bent under his black trousers, his foot resting on Katniss's chair.
His wrist draped over the back of the chair, his clean, long fingers almost touching Katniss's shoulder.
He was almost in a position to encircle Katniss in his arms.
"If the Runyon Corporation project goes smoothly, I'll leave the company to you two. I need to focus on the White family." Benjamin said quietly to Katniss and Samuel.
Both were sitting on either side of him, and Tristan could probably hear his volume too.
But he didn't mind and smiled at Tristan.
Tristan remained expressionless, uninterested in the White family matters.
"Wish you all the best." Katniss said professionally, then added, "You better not get poisoned right away. Do you want to plan your shares in advance?"
Her blunt words made Benjamin frown, and Samuel chuckled, "Makes sense. We've worked hard with you. If you get poisoned and your shares go back to the White family, wouldn't you die in vain? Better make a will in advance, so if anything happens, the shares go to us."
Benjamin gritted his teeth, "You're not working with me, you're digging a grave for me."
"Wouldn't dare." Katniss joked, then added, "Be careful."
She and Samuel could only be considered Benjamin's partners, not his support. If the White family really wanted to kill him, no one would seek justice for Benjamin.
This was particularly harsh for Tristan, who frowned slightly and lowered his eyes.
After the meal, Benjamin still let Katniss leave first, knowing Tristan would definitely go with her, so he also said to Tristan, "Mr. Forbes, goodbye."
"Goodbye." Tristan put one hand in his pocket, draped his coat over his shoulder with the other, and followed Katniss at a distance, slowly walking out.
In the hot summer, even the night breeze was stifling, blowing Katniss's short hair into a mess. She tucked it behind her ear and looked at Tristan, "Didn't drive again?"
"Ryan dropped me off." Tristan stepped down two steps, then added, "But he left."
What's the difference?
Thinking of what Saskia said, she was silent for a few seconds, her heart sinking, and said, "I'll take you home, and we can talk."
"Talk about what?" Tristan stepped down another step, his toe nudging a pebble on the step, and said softly, "If you want to draw a line, then there's no need to talk."
Katniss almost burst into tears, afraid he would force her to reconcile.
But unexpectedly, he was also afraid she would force him to break up.
"Get in the car." Her voice suddenly became much softer. She rummaged through her bag for a while, took out the car keys, and got in the car.
Tristan eventually got in. He thought, if she insisted on talking about that, he would jump out of the car.
But what if she didn't, he wanted to spend more time with her.
In the quiet space, Katniss's faint perfume mixed with the smell of smoke and alcohol on him, which wasn't unpleasant.
But the ambiguous atmosphere between them was palpable.
Katniss could only look outside while driving, "Where do you live?"
"Serenity Villa," Tristan replied.
He turned his head, the neon lights illuminating his profile, his thin lips tightly pressed together. Any slight movement from her made his heart race.
She had driven this road countless times, never feeling it was close, but today, for some reason, they arrived quickly.
The car stopped at the entrance of Serenity Villa. He turned to look at her, something suppressed in his eyes.
"We should talk," Katniss didn't want to feel awkward every time she saw him.
Hearing this, he unbuckled his seatbelt and opened the car door in one swift motion, "It's late, you should go home and rest. We'll talk another day."
The car door closed, and he strode towards the apartment.
"Stop right there." Katniss got out too, her arm resting on the car door.
Tristan stopped abruptly, turned around, and walked back to her with large strides. He raised his hand to her hair and leaned down to kiss her hard on the lips.
She was forced to tilt her head back, her body pressed tightly against the car. His kiss was domineering and somewhat punishing.
He tasted her lips, wanting some reaction from her.
But she didn't respond, neither rejecting nor reciprocating.
Their noses touched, his narrow eyes slightly open, meeting her gaze for a few seconds.
He let go of her, bending down to bury his head in her neck.
"If you're not ready, let's not talk about anything. Given our past relationship, it isn't suitable for us to be friends, but it's also not suitable for us to be strangers."
"Then what do you think we should be?" Katniss tried to suppress her sobs, her head slightly raised, the bright moonlight reflecting the tears in her eyes.
What should they be? Two people who loved each other deeply, if they couldn't be together, then they should never see each other again.
Not exactly enemies, but not much better.
"Don't you want Synergy Global Corporation?" she asked again, "Since Mrs. Forbes has made it clear to you, why are you still so down? Why not take good care of Synergy Global Corporation and the Forbes family?"
"If I don't have you, what do I need Synergy Global Corporation for? What do I need the Forbes family for?" he almost roared, holding her waist tightly, wanting to merge her into his bones.
She ultimately blamed him for decisively canceling the wedding and for Adelaide's actions.
They stayed at the entrance for a long time, exchanging only a few words. He knew he couldn't do anything more, as it would hurt her.
He let go of her, kissed her cheek, then moved to her eye corner and forehead.
"Be careful on the road. I'll wait for you."
She watched him turn and enter Serenity Villa, standing there for a while before getting back in the car.
She started the engine and drove away, the car moving smoothly on the dark road.
Taking a step back was unbearable, moving forward was inappropriate. This dilemma tormented her.
Job Market
On the weekend, many fresh graduates came to the job market, their faces filled with youthful smiles and nervous anticipation.
Matilda held a small sign, staying in a corner observing the job seekers.
She handed out a few business cards, mentioning she was looking to hire an executive assistant.
Although the recipients took the cards, they probably thought her lack of a proper signboard indicated an unprofessional company, so they said they would consider it and contact her later.
But usually, this meant there was little hope.
It wasn't her first time here; she even recognized a few familiar faces.
As it got late, she thought today would end in disappointment and started packing up her sign to leave.
Suddenly, a young girl ran over, looking like a porcelain doll, so cute that Matilda doubted her own gender.
"Hello, are you hiring an executive assistant?" The girl looked at her with hopeful, beautiful eyes.
Matilda nodded, smiling as she handed over a business card, "Hello, the executive is my sister. As long as you're diligent and loyal, you'll have a bright future with her."
The girl handed over her resume, "Please take a look at my information."
"Hazel, twenty-three, graduated from a prestigious university." Matilda was a bit surprised, "With your qualifications, why not apply to a big company?"
Although White Corporation was currently very prominent, she hadn't mentioned it was White Corporation, and Hazel hadn't even asked.
Hazel smiled, looking down at her figure with some frustration, "I've applied to a few, even worked for a few days, but it wasn't suitable."
Those CEOs were all lecherous men.
The more blatant ones would make physical advances, while the more subtle ones would constantly eye her lecherously.
With their high status, she didn't dare offend them, so she had to leave.
So she thought of finding a smaller company. Now hearing the boss was a woman, she was even more interested.
"I'm very serious about my work, don't worry. Although I'm a recent graduate, I know the workplace rules and the importance of loyalty. I can sign a confidentiality agreement!"
