Chapter 470 Go and Call Katniss Over
No one dared to say a word. They exchanged glances and then looked down.
When Evie first saw the lollipop in Elara's hand, all colorful and bright, she was instantly captivated.
She sat there, unmoving, her big eyes fixed on the lollipop that Elara was waving around. She reached out, trying to grab it.
Katniss covered her mouth and coughed twice.
The familiar sound made Evie's small body shudder. She turned her head to look at the end of the long table, where Katniss sat upright, her hands resting on the table, smiling at Evie.
"Mom!" Evie's little belly tightened as she let out a sound, then flipped over and stood up, running barefoot straight to Katniss.
Katniss immediately smiled, reaching out to scoop Evie up as she approached.
Evie hugged her head and gave her two big kisses on the face.
Elara suddenly stood up, the chair scraping loudly against the floor.
"You..."
"Looks like Evie has made her choice," Tristan said, standing up and giving Katniss a once-over. "You need to move to my place. Any issues with that?"
Katniss shook her head. "No, Mr. Forbes, I have no objections."
Tristan nodded, seemingly satisfied. "Good. Now, take Evie and come to my office. We'll leave on time this afternoon to get your things and head to my place."
"I might need to grab some things from the admin department," Katniss said, thinking of her bag and phone left at her desk.
"Okay, go pack up and meet me in my office." Tristan walked over, picked up Evie, and led the way out of the office.
Katniss was about to follow when Elara spoke up, "Everyone, return to your posts. Katniss, stay."
The tense atmosphere spread instantly, and everyone else quickly left without a word.
Elara closed the conference room door, turned around, and crossed her arms, looking at Katniss. "You can't do this job. Go to Mr. Forbes' office and refuse it."
"Don't worry, Director. I can handle it," Katniss politely declined.
Whether Elara didn't understand her refusal or simply wouldn't accept it, she made her point clearer. "I don't care if you can handle it. I'm telling you to go to Mr. Forbes and refuse this assignment."
Katniss asked knowingly, "Why?"
"Because you took my job!" Elara said bluntly, seeing Katniss's confusion. "I'm warning you, stay away from Mr. Forbes. He's mine!"
"Director, do I need to remind you that Mr. Forbes is married and has a child?" Katniss hadn't expected Elara's interest in Tristan to be personal.
Could it be that Dwayne was interested in collaborating with Tristan, but Elara had other intentions?
Elara grew impatient. "Do you care if he's married or has a kid? I told you to resign!"
"I understand what you're saying, but I think you don't understand me," Katniss said seriously. "I refuse."
The final sentence was particularly clear in the quiet conference room.
Elara, who had never heard such a direct refusal, was momentarily stunned.
Katniss nodded slightly. "Director, I'll go pack my things now. If you have any issues, you can find me."
With that, she walked around Elara and left the conference room.
The sound of the door closing snapped Elara back to reality, her face flushing with anger.
Word of Katniss being chosen had already spread throughout the company in those few minutes.
As soon as she reached the admin department, Marigold rushed over. "You're amazing! I thought you were just giving it a shot, but you actually got the position. Didn't the director give you any trouble?"
Everyone knew how much Elara wanted that position.
"She asked me to give it up," Katniss said honestly, earning a thumbs-up and a worried look from Marigold. "With Mr. Forbes backing you now, you'll be in trouble once he leaves the company."
Elara wouldn't tolerate her.
After some serious thought, Katniss shook her head. "Elara will keep making things difficult for me until she gives up or replaces me."
Replacing her was impossible, but she couldn't say that to Marigold.
Marigold held up two fingers. "You're really brave. If you need any help, just ask."
"Alright, I'm heading upstairs." Katniss grabbed her bag and other things, said goodbye to Connie, and went upstairs.
Elara was also in Tristan's office, and whatever they had discussed had left her looking unhappy.
When Katniss arrived, Elara's expression darkened even more.
"Please tell Ms. West that I'm treating them to dinner tonight," Tristan said, effectively dismissing Elara.
Elara turned and left, huffing as she passed Katniss.
With the office door closed, it was just the three of them. Tristan let Evie go, and she ran to Katniss without hesitation.
"Mom! Mom!" Evie ran with her little arms outstretched, hugging Katniss's leg and looking up with her chubby face, showing a few baby teeth in a smile that melted Katniss's heart.
Though she saw Evie every day at home, the past few days at the company had been hard, with Evie wanting affection and Katniss having to refuse.
Now, she could finally indulge Evie.
She sat down with Evie in the office, playing with her.
"The office next door is Dwayne's," Tristan reminded.
Katniss instinctively lowered her voice.
In the next office, the conversation was also hushed.
"What did you say?" Dwayne threw down his pen and stood up, looking at Elara. "Who did Mr. Forbes choose?"
"Katniss," Elara replied.
Dwayne's face fell into despair.
Elara, not noticing, continued, "Mr. Forbes said he's taking Katniss home after work to pack her things and move in with him."
Move in with him? That was where Dwayne lived! The more he thought about it, the worse he felt.
"Dwayne, you have to do something!" Elara walked over, clinging to his arm and pouting. "If I don't win over Mr. Forbes, how can you secure his cooperation?"
Dwayne, already frustrated, felt even more overwhelmed.
After a long pause, he pushed Elara's hand away. "Let me think."
He sat down, and Elara perched on the armrest of his chair, wrapping an arm around his neck. "You promised to always love and take care of me. I don't care."
"My God, I'll think of something. Don't worry." Dwayne tried to calm her. "Go get Katniss for me."
